This past week saw the release of Pixar's latest film, Elio, which is about a space-loving young boy who finds himself on an adventure of intergalactic proportions when he bonds with alien life forms. As of late, most of Pixar's sequels have been the more successful films, so this latest feature represents a project from the studio that doesn't come from an existing IP. With that, the studio and its parent company, Disney, are encouraging audiences to support the film and, based on a post, they seem to mean business.
By way of a recent Instagram post, Pixar followed the new internet trend where people share hard truths off screen and then pretend they don't know where the source of the statement is. The studio's video involved a social media personality talking about audiences complaining that there aren't any original stories but that audiences don't show up to the movie theaters to support these original ideas in the first place. The video was blunt and ended with the pundit encouraging people to show up to the theaters to support Elio this week. You can see it below:
Honestly, I didn't expect this from the Disney-owned company, as bigwigs have played things pretty safe when it comes to marketing their movies. This post definitely represents frustration, though, and it's understandable. Pixar's latest flick is a fresh idea that animators worked to perfect for years and years. Additionally, reviews for Elio have also been positive, with critics being charmed by the new project and the messaging at the core. The cosmic, coming-of-age romp deserves support, especially considering how hard it can be to get original ideas off the ground in Hollywood.
Still, Elio bombed at the box office in its opening weekend a week ago, with its debut marking the worst opening for a Pixar movie ever. That's a hard fact to consider, especially considering it's the summer and many kids (who'd be potential viewers) are out of school by now. An analyst could make the argument that the film is facing competition from DreamWorks' live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which is soaring, and probably also benefiting from the fact that it's based on an existing IP.

In general, this box office failure may just be a symptom of original movies performing undesirably across the board. That's one of the reasons that CinemaBlend's own Dirk Libbey isn't worried about Pixar just yet. However, the studio still needs a winner. Sure, it's understandable why some may be pumped for Toy Story 5 or Incredibles 3. However, supporting original films means there's more promise for new ideas and inspired stories, which could possibly end up becoming classic Disney movies. So, as conveyed in the IG video above, why not take a trip to the movie theaters and support a fresh film?
Elio is in theaters now, so make sure to check it out on the big screen while you can. For more information on other titles heading to cinemas this summer, make sure to consult our 2025 movie release schedule.

Action News Jax breaks down the City of Jacksonville's top ‘Ticket Takers'

As the Jacksonville City Council spars with the mayor's office over the distribution of the free tickets to games, concerts, and events at city-run venues, Action News Jax is digging into the numbers and revealing the city's top ticket-takers. Among city council members, Councilmember Terrance Freeman (R-Group 1 At-Large) topped the list with 96 requests over the past two years, followed by Councilmember Reggie Gaffney Jr. (D-District 8) at 37, and Councilmember Ju'coby Pittman (D-District 10) at 28. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< In response to making the top three list, all three council members issued statements. 'I've used tickets offered to all 'Council members and shared access with the residence (sic) and distributed to constituents who wouldn't otherwise have access to events. The tickets have been a long-standing practice for Council members. Ticket assess allow me to stay connected with my constituents. If policy changes regarding the distribution of tickets, I will continue to follow policy. 28 tickets were reported and 5 were unused, revised ticket distribution is 23 that were used,' Pittman said. 'It's no secret that my constituents are my top priority. In District 8, a lot of families, kids, teachers, and even first responders don't always get the chance to enjoy events that bring people together. When I request tickets, it's not always for me; it's oftentimes so the people I serve can experience something uplifting and memorable that brings Jacksonville as a whole together, leaving no one out. I believe everyone deserves moments of joy and connection, no matter their circumstances. That's why the number you've received is the number it is. And I wish to continue providing this opportunity to them,' Gaffney Jr. said. 'Blessed to have a large family and over the course of going on 8 years have attended events,' Freeman said. RELATED: City Council requested more than twice as many free city tickets as mayor's office over past 2 years When you factor in requests made by council aides, Freeman remains at the top with 117 tickets over two years, while the ticket reform bill sponsor Councilmember Ron Salem (R-Group 2 At-Large) moves up into second at 97, and Vice President Nick Howland (R-Group 3 At-Large) bumps up to third with 52. Salem and Howland did not comment on the stats. Council President Kevin Carrico (R-District 4) argued many of the requested tickets likely went to constituents. 'This isn't about tit-for-tat at this point on who went to what shows. It's about cleaning it up and making sure that these tickets that are contractually obligated through contracts to come to the city are given to people who deserve to go,' Carrico said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] And council members aren't alone. In Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan's Office, Chief Administrative Officer Karen Bowling led the pack with 64 tickets requested over the past two years, followed by her Deputy CAO Kelli O'Leary with 53, and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Brittany Norris came in third with 28 tickets. 'This practice began many years ago for economic development efforts and building relationships with community members. That remains true today,' the mayor's office told Action News Jax in a statement. 'It's part of the mayor's job to be an ambassador and represent the city. It's also useful for those who oversee event venue operations to evaluate the citizen experience and make it better.' [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] But without any way to verify who actually received the requested tickets, University of North Florida Political Science Professor Dr. Michael Binder argued it lends itself to questions of potential favoritism or abuse. 'Are you giving them away to lobbyists? You know, who is getting them? What's happening? It's a bad look all around, and you know, maybe this is something good that could come from some middle school back and forth between council and the administration for once,' Binder said. Both the Mayor's Office and Council President Carrico said they're open to introducing more transparency and accountability into the ticket request process and support prohibiting elected officials from personally using the tickets on themselves. Ava Max Addresses Longtime Lady Gaga Comparisons in New Leaked Song Lyrics

The "Sweet But Psycho" singer's new album 'Don't Click Play' is due out on Friday, Aug. 22 NEED TO KNOW Ava Max addresses being compared to Lady Gaga in a leaked snippet from her new album The "Sweet But Psycho" singer name dropped one of the 14-time Grammy winner's earlier tracks, "Poker Face" Don't Click Play is available to stream on Friday, Aug. 22 Ava Max is addressing those Lady Gaga comparisons in her new album. In a snippet leaked online earlier this week of Max's new album's title track "Don't Click Play," Max, 31, appears to reference Gaga, 39, and how she has been compared to the 14-time Grammy winner. "She samples, singing Gaga imitations/Can't kings and queens look good with poker faces?" Max sings in the leaked clip, referring to her song "Kings and Queens" and Gaga's "Poker Face," respectively. "But I'm loving myself even if you hate it." Other tracks on Max's upcoming album include her already-released singles "Lovin Myself," "Lost Your Faith" and "Wet Hot American Summer. "How Can I Dance," "Take My Call," "Skin in the Game," and 'World's Smallest Violin" are also featured on the new record. Max, whose real name is Amanda Ava Koci, spoke about online commentary in the past. Although it was "kind of mean," she found the Gaga comparisons complementary. "No matter how many haters there are out there, or people who want to bring you down — or people who think I'm a Lady Gaga comparison, which is huuuh-larious," she told NYLON in 2023. "Who doesn't love Gaga?! I can't help that I look like this. I was born the way I was born too! I can't help that I'm 5-foot-2 as well," she continued, also noting that comparisons to other pop stars didn't stop when she changed the color of her hair. "Like what do they want me to do, dye my hair black?! I did that, and then they started comparing me to Dua [Lipa]! You can't win." In May, Max spoke to PEOPLE about how she found inspiration for Don't Click Play — or, rather, where she didn't. "I become a hermit, to be honest, when I'm making music," she explained. "I try not to let too many things influence me because I want it to come from my heart, and I want it to come from the inside of my brain where it's just, 'Who am I at the end of the day?' I don't want to get too influenced." "The thing is, I'm going back to my roots on this album," she continued. "I feel like there's a lot of Kings & Queens feeling songs on the album. It's almost like going back to how I started and my love for pop music, really." The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! Max said she let online comments get to her in the past two years, and "changed who I was for other people." "I took away the Max Cut essentially because people in the industry didn't like it," she said. Since the people she had been working with didn't like it, she removed it. "Then, I realized that it was 1% of the population that didn't like it, and I loved it. I was like, 'Wait. The masses love it, and it doesn't make any sense for me to get rid of something when I feel so strongly about it.' " The "Sweet But Psycho" singer also teased what fans can expect on her latest record. "There's definitely going to be remixes," Max said when asked about possible collaborations. "There's going to be some collaborations. Can't say much right now. I can't give you all the surprises." Max previously released Heaven & Hell and Diamonds & Dancefloors in 2020 and 2023, respectively. Don't Click Play will be available to stream on Friday, Aug. 22. Read the original article on People
