
Football mad e-hailing driver's murder case transferred to the High Court
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali made the order today when the case was brought up for mention before her today.
Zakwan Mokhtar, 23, was charged under Section 320 of the Penal Code with murdering Nurul Asikin Lan in December last year.
He was alleged to have done so to steal her gold bracelet and earrings, which he intended to pawn to fund his trip to watch Malaysia play Cambodia in the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Asean Cup football tournament in Phnom Penh on Dec 8.
If found guilty, Zakwan faces the death sentence or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.
Deputy public prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei informed the court today that the post-mortem examination report on the 28-year-old victim, fondly known as "Amoi" to family members and friends, and the retrieval of the WhatsApp messages between the suspect and the victim have been completed.
Zakwan, who was unrepresented, only nodded his head in acknowledgment when the murder charge was read to him by a court interpreter.
On Dec 14, Nurul Asikin's highly decomposed body was discovered in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja in the residential housing area of Tabuan Jaya.
Zakwan was arrested on the same day the body was found.
This case attracted public attention after the accused, during police interrogation, was said to have confessed to the murder and his motive for the killing.
He was charged later that same month.

Electrician charged with hurting stepsons
SEREMBAN: An electrician was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday with three counts of voluntarily causing hurt to his three stepsons by hitting them with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe. The 44-year old man pleaded not guilty to all the charges, two of which, involving were read out before Judge Datin Surita Budin and the other before Judge N. Kanageswari. For all three charges, he was charged with intentionally causing hurt by dangerous means to the three boys, aged 15, 16 and 19, with a PVC pipe at a house in Taman Bukit Mutiara here at 5.30 am on Aug 15 this year. In the court before Judge N. Kanageswari, the boy's biological mother was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to the 16-year-old son using a knife at the same place and location. The charges were framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for up to 10 years, or with fine, or with whipping, or with any two of such punishments, and punishable under Section 326A of the same law, which provides punishment that may extend to twice the maximum term. The man was allowed bail of RM33,000 with one surety for all three charges, while bail for the mother was set at RM15,000 with one surety. They were also ordered to surrender their passports to the court, report to a nearby police station once a month, and not to intimidate witnesses. Deputy public prosecutors Norazihah Asmuni and Siti Khairiah Abdul Razak prosecuted in the cases, respectively, while both accused were unrepresented. UMNO Youth Chief claims trial to charge of causing public fear
BUKIT MERTAJAM: UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of making statements likely to cause fear or alarm to the public. Dr Muhamad Akmal, who is also the Merlimau state assemblyman, entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Nurul Rashidah Mohd Akit. According to the charge, the accused allegedly made a statement via a social media post at 3 pm on Aug 11, that could have caused public fear and alarm. State prosecution director Datuk Mohd Nordin Ismail presented the case under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which provides for a penalty of up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. Dr Muhamad Akmal is represented by a legal team led by Aizat Azam. The prosecution proposed a bail of RM10,000 for Dr Muhamad Akmal. However, Aizat requested a reduction to RM2,000, citing his client's responsibilities as both a doctor and elected representative, as well as his duty to support a wife and two young children.
