KUCHING (June 13): Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar has been elected as the president of the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) yesterday.
He won the post unopposed during the state badminton ruling body's Annual General Meeting (AGM) here.
In his inaugural address, Wan Lizozman expressed heartfelt gratitude to all affiliated associations for their trust and confidence, pledging to lead SBA with humility, transparency and strategic focus.
Being elected unopposed, he described the honour as a profound responsibility and called for continued unity among affiliates to drive SBA forward.
Also elected unopposed was Ting Wei Ping as deputy president.
In the spirit of continuity and inclusiveness, the new president reaffirmed that all affiliates presidents will automatically serve as SBA vice presidents, ensuring broad representation from across Sarawak.
Wan Lizozman also conveyed his sincere appreciation to former president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain for his dedicated leadership and contributions to SBA over the years.
He acknowledged Abdul Aziz's role in laying the strong foundation on which SBA now stands.
Wan Lizozman also announced the appointments of Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad as the secretary and Jonathan Kho as the treasurer.
Both bring significant experience and will play central roles in implementing SBA's renewed strategic direction.
Notably, Wan Khalik's appointment also ensures Sarawak's direct representation at the national level as he will automatically serve as a member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) High Council.
This is a significant step forward for SBA in strengthening its voice and involvement in shaping national badminton policies.
Acknowledging the recent challenges faced by SBA including the temporary suspension of the association, Wan Lizozman emphasised the urgent need to rebuild and restore public confidence.
'It's time to restore SBA's image and strengthen trust among all stakeholders – from grassroots athletes and coaches to state leadership and corporate partners.
'We will uphold transparency, professionalism and progress moving forward,' he said.
Looking ahead, the president outlined his intention to form key working committees covering development, technical and tournaments, commercial and other relevant areas to support SBA's strategic priorities.
These committees will be formalised at the upcoming council meeting.
On Sukma Selangor 2026, Wan Lizozman also shared his commitment to ensuring that Sarawak's badminton team is well-prepared and competitive.
He emphasised the importance of structured development, athlete support and high-performance training to build on the momentum achieved in previous games.
Wan Lizozman proudly highlighted that for the first time in history, Sarawak clinched its first-ever Sukma gold medal in badminton during the Sukma 2024 edition, through the outstanding performance of its women's singles player.
This historic win serves as a powerful motivation for SBA to elevate the state's performance further at the national level.
In his closing remarks, Wan Lizozman emphasised the shared mission to elevate Sarawak badminton — from grassroots development and coaching excellence to producing national-level athletes who can shine on the international stage.
'With unity, focus, and professionalism, I believe we can build a stronger future for badminton in Sarawak,' he said.
The AGM was attended by all affiliate badminton associations from across Sarawak and marks the start of a new chapter for SBA. badminton Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar Sarawak Badminton Association

Malaysia Rugby raises import player quota to seven for 2025 Agong's Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (MR) has decided to increase the number of import players allowed to compete in the 2025 Agong's Cup from four to seven players. MR secretary-general Fahmy Abd Jalil said the decision was agreed upon during the union's annual general meeting (AGM) following requests from several affiliate members to increase the import player quota for the tournament. 'We have made a resolution to allow teams participating in the Agong's Cup to increase the number of import players. Previously, only four players were permitted, but for this edition, we have raised it to seven. 'This follows proposals from several affiliate members to increase the number of import players to make the tournament more competitive and provide teams with more player options,' he told Bernama today. Fahmy said MR has sent invitation letters to states to participate in the tournament, which is expected to kick off in mid-August. Meanwhile, Fahmy said the AGM also discussed plans to revive the Malaysian Rugby League (MRL) in 2026. 'All affiliate members unanimously agreed to bring back the MRL in 2026. However, it will depend on financial allocations and budget,' he said. The MRL, introduced in 2004, features prominent national clubs such as Cobra, Keris Conlay, NS Wanderers, Eagles, Serdang Angels, Asas RFC and Bandaraya Dragons. The league was last held in 2019.

Tupong assemblyman wins FAS president's post unopposed
KUCHING: Tupong assemblyman Datuk Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman was today elected unopposed as the new president of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) for the 2025-2027 term after sports consultant Dr Mohammed Syafiq Abdullah withdrew from contesting at the FAS annual general meeting (AGM) here. Fazzrudin, who is also Kuching City FA president, took over from Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman, who declined to seek re-election at the AGM today. Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim was also elected deputy president unopposed. The posts of five vice-presidents went to Sophie Shariee with 25 votes, Khairulddin Qalam Daud (24 votes), Khairul Anuar Adeni (23 votes), Hailcal Abdullah (17 votes) and Nichol Agoi (16 votes). Speaking to reporters later, Fazzrudin said his main task was to promote the Sarawak Premier League as his first major initiative to reignite the local football scene. He explained that the premier league was scheduled to kick off by September at the latest, explaining that the competition would adopt a 'home' and 'away' format, and feature teams from across all Sarawak divisions. He said the aim was to strengthen grassroots football by focusing on the development of players, coaches, referees and infrastructure. "In the long term, as our league grows stronger, we will be able to produce more high-calibre players with the potential to be absorbed into teams in the Malaysian League, or even Indonesia's Liga 1. "That is my dream—to see Sarawakian players competing on bigger stages. "It's not an impossible dream, but one that requires a clear strategy, proper planning and phased implementation. God-willing, with consistent effort, we can achieve this goal," he said. He said among the key priorities outlined by the new FAS leadership was the continued enhancement of coaching quality through courses initiated in the past . He added refereeing standards would also be improved through regular training and certification, while attention would be given to field facilities and infrastructure to ensure that every team had access to adequate and high-quality training venues. Fazzrudin said the state's premier league would be held annually and be limited to local players for now. "Although there are international students at higher learning institutions in Sarawak who are interested in taking part, their inclusion has not been considered at this stage. "That said, the possibility of involving them in the future remains open, depending on the needs and development of the league," he added. The age limit for players was still under discussion, but for the inaugural edition, there would be no age restriction to encourage wider participation.
