Kent State hits the road, knocks off Stanford in NIT
VonCameron Davis chipped in with 12 points for the Golden Flashes (24-11), who opened the NIT with a victory at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
Kent State will advance to the tournament quarterfinals, where it will take on Loyola-Chicago, a 77-76 upset winner at San Francisco on Sunday.
Jaylen Blakes had a team-high 23 points and Maxime Raynaud 22 as part of a double-double for the Cardinal (21-14), formally bringing to an end Stanford's first season as an Atlantic Coast Conference school.
Seeking to win a third straight on the road dating back to the Mid-American Conference regular season, Kent State ran up a 13-point lead in the first half en route to a 43-34 advantage at the break. Sullinger had 20 of his 34 points and five of his seven 3-pointers in the 20 minutes.
It took Stanford less than five minutes to erase the deficit, opening the second period with a 12-2 burst that featured six points from Raynaud.
The Cardinal went up by as many as two at 49-47 at the 13:56 mark before Sullinger caught fire again, hitting a game-tying jumper and then a go-ahead basket.
When he added a 3-pointer with 10:29 remaining and assisted on a Cli'Ron Hornbeak layup 36 seconds later, the visitors had regained a 58-51 advantage, never to trail again.
Stanford closed within 74-72 when Blakes hit the first of two free throws with seven seconds left. But he missed the second, and when a Sullinger rebound turned into a Cardinal foul, the guard dropped in two foul shots to ice the victory.
Raynaud hit a 3-pointer with one second left, and Davis made one of two foul shots for the final margin.
Sullinger's point total was two more than he'd had in January against Western Michigan and again in February at Bowling Green. He also found time for eight rebounds, a team-high five assists and three steals.
Gillespie's double-double consisted of 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Raynaud, a highly regarded prospect from France, completed his senior season with a team-high 10 rebounds and four blocks.
Chisom Okpara had 13 points and Oziyah Sellers 11 for the Cardinal, whose eight 3-pointers in the game were just one more than Sullinger's individual total.

Simi Fehoko staking a claim to a roster spot in Cardinals receivers room
Fehoko is a newcomer to the receiver room, but there are familiar faces for him. The Arizona Cardinals currently have 16 wide receivers or tight ends on the 91-player roster and three are from Stanford — wide receivers Michael Wilson and Simi Fehoko and tight end Elijah Higgins. That total is nearly 10 percent of the 31 Stanford players currently on NFL rosters or reserve lists. Wilson was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2023 draft, while Higgins was a sixth-round pick in Miami, but was cut in the roster reduction to 53 and was claimed by the Cardinals. Fehoko was drafted by the Cowboys in the fifth round in 2021, was briefly on the Steelers practice squad in 2023 before being signed by the Chargers. He became an unrestricted free agent this past March and to say his signing by the Cardinals was under the radar would be a significant understatement. Now, Fehoko has a solid chance of being on the 53-man roster thanks to his versatility and ability on special teams after scoring the game's only touchdown in Saturday's loss to the Broncos. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Monday that Fehoko 'made some plays on teams.' Then, Marvin Harrison Jr. sent some accolades Fehoko's way Monday when he said, 'He's been great. I think he's made everybody, especially in the route running, come back to the ball. He does a great job with that. And I asked him, 'Where'd you get that from?' He's like, 'After my rookie year, kind of something I had to develop just for me to get the separation, make the play.' 'So, I think he's definitely elevated everybody's game from certain standpoints. I think he's done a great job with that. I mean, his ball skills are tremendous and the way he can come back to the football definitely has helped me and made sure that I can take that from his game.' For his part, Fehoko is glad to be reunited with Wilson and Higgins. Asked about Wilson's growth, Fehoko said, 'I mean he's a whole different player than when I was with him in college. So, it's awesome to see, not only how his game has developed and now how he's a true threat in the league. So, super cool to see. He dealt with so much in college with all the injuries and barely played. 'He and I were freshman roommates. We came in first day together and we were roomed together, and he's always had that hard-work mentality, and it's awesome to see it finally pay off here and finally get the recognition he deserves.' As for Higgins making the transition from college wide receiver to tight end, Fehoko said, 'We always made fun of him for being a little too big in the receiver room, but now it sort of makes sense and he's doing well as a tight end.' Michigan State football included in ESPN's preseason bowl projections
One of the two experts at ESPN has the Spartans bowling this season. ESPN has released their preseason bowl projections, and one of the two writers included in the projections has the Spartans reaching the postseason this fall. That would be Mark Schlabach, while Kyle Bonagura has Michigan State failing to reach bowl eligibility for a fourth straight season. Schlabach has Michigan State landing in the nearby GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. His projected matchup for the Spartans is against Ohio out of the Mid-American Conference. Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over/under of 5.5, signifying the Spartans will be right on the fringe of reaching the postseason. The Spartans went 5-7 last season in year one under head coach Jonathan Smith, but expectations have been raised this year with fans expecting a bowl berth from the Spartans. Michigan State opens the 2025 season next week against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium on August 29 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Freshman Bear Bachmeier to start at QB for BYU
Bear Bachmeier has won the quarterback competition at BYU, coach Kalani Sitake said Tuesday. "He settled it on the field. He gives us the best chance to win right now," Sitake said. He will become the first true freshman in program history to start Week 1 when the Cougars open against Portland State on Aug. 30, ESPN reported. Bachmeier will wear the unusual QB number of 47, which he showed off in a social media video while dressed as a bear. It's a quick turn for BYU, which saw starter Jake Retzlaff withdraw from school on July 11 amid news BYU intended to suspend him for seven games over a violation of the school's honor code. Retzlaff now is at Tulane. Bachmeier initially committed to Stanford and spent the spring in Palo Alto, but he entered the transfer portal in May and headed to BYU. Transferring with him from Stanford was his older brother, Tiger. Tiger caught 46 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns over two seasons at Stanford. The Bachmeier name could sound familiar. Oldest brother Hank concluded his six-year career as a college quarterback in 2024 with Wake Forest after previously playing for Boise State and Louisiana Tech. Bear was a four-star recruit, as ranked by the 247Sports composite, in the Class of 2025. Tiger was a three-star in the 2023 class. The brothers are from Murrieta, Calif. Bachmeier bested transfers Treyson Bourguet, a redshirt junior from Western Michigan, and redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead from Utah State, to win the starting job.
