Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (July 31, 2025) laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth ₹574.16 crore in Muzaffarpur district. The project includes construction work of Railway Over Bridge (ROB)-cum-approach road between Ramdayalu Nagar and Muzaffarpur railway station at a cost of ₹167.68 crore and construction work of a road from Muzaffarpur-Pusa Road to Chandwara bridge approach road at a cost of ₹120.93 crore. Mr. Kumar laid the foundation stone for widening and upgradation work of the road portion from Chandni Chowk to Ramdayalu Nagar at a cost of ₹44.76 crore and widening and strengthening work spanning 7 km of Chandni Chowk to Bakhri road at a cost of ₹89.77 crore. The Chief Minister laid widening and strengthening work of many other roads. After laying the foundation for the various works, Mr. Kumar interacted with social security pensioners at Teacher Training College, Patahi in which the beneficiaries thanked him for increasing the pension amount from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month. He also provided tricycles to persons with disabilities apart from handing over a cheque of ₹1 lakh each to the beneficiaries under Inter-Caste Marriage Promotion Scheme. On the announcement of making 125 units of electricity free per month to every domestic consumer under the Chief Minister's Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme, the domestic consumers present there also thanked Mr. Kumar for the decision. The ASHA workers present there too thanked the Chief Minister for increasing the incentive amount threefold from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. While interacting with the members of self-help groups (SHGs) also known as Jeevika members, Mr. Kumar said when his government was formed in Bihar, the number of SHGs were negligible. 'In the year 2006, we took a loan from the World Bank and started increasing the number of self-help groups. The Jeevika sisters are doing a very good job. We named the self-help group as Jeevika and all of you are called Jeevika sisters,' Mr. Kumar said. 'Inspired by our work, the Central government of that time implemented this scheme in the whole country under the name of Aajeevika. All of you stay strong and move forward. The government will help you in every possible way,' he added. Accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and others, he also inspected the under-construction ROB of Muzaffarpur-Bypass, which is being constructed in a total length of 16.87 km at a cost of ₹250 crore. Except the ROB, the construction work of the remaining road has been completed. During the inspection, Mr. Kumar instructed officials to complete the remaining work as soon as possible. With its completion, traffic in Muzaffarpur city is expected to become more smooth. During the Pragati Yatra on January 5 this year, Mr. Kumar had reviewed the development work of Muzaffarpur district and promised several developmental schemes would be launched soon.

He lauded his party's government for acting tough against drug smugglers and bringing an "education revolution" in the state. Kejriwal was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the martyrdom day of legendary freedom fighter Udham Singh. Speaking at the event, Mann said it is the state government's duty to pay tributes to such legendary martyrs, who laid down their lives for the sake of the country. The chief minister said that naming airports, universities and other institutions in the name of these iconic martyrs is important to perpetuate their glorious legacy. Mann said the AAP is making tireless efforts to realize the dreams of the legendary martyrs, adding it is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that this government is making concerted efforts in this regard. The state government has been making efforts to ensure comprehensive development of the state and prosperity of its people, he added. The chief minister also spoke about the 'Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna', which will provide cashless medical treatment up to Rs 10 lakh for every resident family in Punjab. Punjab is the first state in the country to offer such comprehensive healthcare coverage, which will significantly ease the financial burden on the public while ensuring quality health services. He said that 55,000 government jobs have been given so far to the state's youth, Aam Aadmi clinics have been opened to impart quality health services to people, schools have been renovated across the state and canal water is reaching the tail end to benefit farmers.

Centre's fiscal deficit hits 17.9% of full-year target in Q1; higher spending lifts gap to Rs 2.8 lakh crore: CGA data
Representative image The central government's fiscal deficit touched 17.9% of the full-year target at the end of June 2025, more than double the 8.4% recorded in the same period last year, data from the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) showed on Thursday. In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit — the gap between revenue and expenditure — stood at Rs 2.8 lakh crore for the April–June period of FY26. The Centre has pegged the fiscal deficit for the full year at 4.4% of GDP, or Rs 15.69 lakh crore, PTI reported. As of June, the government had received Rs 9.41 lakh crore, or 26.9% of Budget Estimates (BE) for 2025-26. This included net tax revenue of Rs 5.4 lakh crore, non-tax revenue of Rs 3.73 lakh crore, and non-debt capital receipts of Rs 28,018 crore. Transfers to state governments surged to Rs 3.27 lakh crore, up Rs 47,439 crore from a year earlier, as devolution of tax shares accelerated. Total government expenditure in the first quarter came in at Rs 12.22 lakh crore, or 24.1% of BE, with Rs 9.47 lakh crore spent on the revenue account and Rs 2.75 lakh crore on the capital account.
