Quadruple-winning Arsenal manager hoping for miracle in women's Champions League
Former Arsenal Women's manager Vic Akers hopes the Gunners will emulate his team when they face Barcelona in the women's Champions League final in Lisbon this weekend
Vic Akers is full of pride when he sees thousands of fans flocking to Arsenal WSL games at the Emirates. It is a long way from his very early days in charge when his players would have to pay Sunday League style subs just to hire the pitches.
Akers hopes Arsenal's current generation will emulate his team when they face Barcelona in the women's Champions League final in Lisbon this weekend. Arsenal were the first and so far only British side to conquer Europe.
But there is a unique piece of history from that success - when his Arsenal side won an unprecedented quadruple back in 2007 - which he thinks will never be beaten. Akers said: 'I don't think anyone will repeat what we did by winning all four. And I take immense pride about it.
"We grew the game. It gives me so much pride when I go to games at the Emirates now and see thousands of people walking up to the stadium.
'Barcelona are the best team, in my view. By far. They took Chelsea apart in the semi final. They pop it around the pitch, they are so well coached. But you never know - it's a one-off game and anything is possible.'
Akers worked miracles during his 22 year stint as Arsenal manager while combining his role as kit man for the men's first team. Not only did he take Arsenal's women to the top but he also put the whole women's game on the map. It started from humble beginnings - players paying their own subs - and today's generation is reaping the benefits.
'The girls paid to play, we had to pay for pitches, I had very little money from the club at that point, it changed in the 90s,' said Akers. ' Arsene Wenger was fabulous, the players were supportive and the gaffer was brilliant,' said Akers, who turns 79 in August.
'The gaffer was right behind it, David Dein was so supportive and it's just brilliant to see what's happened to the game and very nice to hear get some recognition along the way. The club have invited me to Lisbon which is a nice touch.'
Akers' team won the lot in 2007 but their hardest task was Swedish side Umea in a two-legged final. They won away from home 1-0 thanks to Alex Scott's goal, held them at home and lifted the trophy.
And they did it all without Kelly Smith who Akers regarded as the best player in the world at that time. Smith was sent off after being kicked from pillar to post in the semi final with Brondby and she finally snapped and got sent off.
But Akers' secret to success was to opt to play at Borehamwood rather than the Emirates and also work a tactical masterplan to cope without Smith.
Akers said: 'I gave the players the option because we'd been told we could play at the Emirates. I left it to them to decide with a vote. My feeling was that we had a better chance at Borehamwood.
'It's the closeness of the supporters at Borehamwood, it's further away at the Emirates and I don't think we would have filled it back then, even though the game is changing now. It gave us a better atmosphere, the crowd was on top of the players and the opposition didn't like it. They had a running track, astroturf and a very different ground. Their crowd couldn't get to us and that's why we did so well over there.
'You know you have to work double hard, everyone else has to contain them and I knew goals would be hard to get. We had to get numbers behind the ball, then all of a sudden Alex Scott got the ball and we were shouting: 'Shoot!'
'That's what she did, it flew in the top corner and all of a sudden we've beaten the best team in the world and we're going back with a 1-0 lead. We had two midfield destroyers in Katie Chapman and Jayne Ludlow and they covered every blade of grass, that's where we won the game with their endurance and our keeper was great on the day. So, you never know. It could happen for this team. And now it's a one-off game.'

Manchester United should try to agree a stunning swap deal with Aston Villa involving Marcus Rashford, according to Old Trafford hero Wes Brown. With Aston Villa likely to renew talks with Manchester United, Brown has advised his former club to enquire into the possibility of signing Ollie Watkins as part of the deal. Amorim is determined to sign a new No. 9 this summer and Watkins, who has scored 87 goals in 223 appearances for Villa, could be a cheaper option than Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. Watkins was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park in January after Arsenal made a surprise £40m bid but the 29-year-old ended up staying put. United were keen to sign Liam Delap before he joined Chelsea for £30m but Brown believes Watkins would be an even better option than the former Ipswich Town forward. 'Manchester United need a striker who has goals and although Liam Delap might not get you 20 just yet, he is a great player and has all the attributes to be a success,' Brown told BoyleSports. 'Personally, having Rasmus Hojlund up front on his own looked very difficult for him, he got a lot of stick and looked to have no back up whatsoever. 'He cannot be left in that position again because it's not fair on him, Chido Obi came in who is another young player, but United have to get a striker this summer. 'Marcus Rashford will be a difficult permanent signing for Aston Villa, as there are contractual obligations and a certain level of money that he wants. 'Therefore, I'm not sure it will be beneficial for Villa to sign Marcus or if it is even a possibility. However, one thing is for sure, Rashford will bring value and talent to any team he is playing for. 'Signing Rashford is a lot easier to say than to actually get done, but if he did sign for Villa, he would be fantastic for them as he has been since January.' Speaking to Metro 'Delap would've been a good player for United, but I'd go for experience. Manchester United need a striker and Ollie Watkins has shown us that he can do that in the Premier League. If the club is looking to get rid of him, they're probably wanting to get paid as well. 'It's not an easy one to sort out, talking from my heart, I think it would be brilliant if Ruben Amorim and Marcus could sort things out. 'When he's on form, it's a player United have really missed. I hope they can sort it out in a way that everybody gets what they want. 'For Marcus personally, he just needs to get his head down and play some football now. Man Utd transfer target Viktor Gyokeres ‘furious at Sporting after U-turn on £84million release clause'
VIKTOR GYOKERES is fuming at Sporting Lisbon after their U-turn on his release clause, it has been claimed. The Sweden striker is in incredibly high demand following a second straight stellar season with the Portuguese giants. 3 3 Gyokeres is understood to have reached a gentleman's agreement with the club at the start of the season, which would see them accept a fee less than the £84million release clause in his contract. The 27-year-old was told he could leave the Portuguese capital for an overall fee of £59million, with £51m of that figure being paid up front. But Portuguese newspaper Record claims Sporting have had a change of heart and won't part with Gyokeres' services unless they receive £67m. Gyokeres, who is wanted by Manchester United, is reportedly irate with the club's U-turn and feels like they have betrayed him. The Swede is ready to move on to pastures new after two goal-ridden seasons, which have also caught the eye of United's Premier League rivals Arsenal. He scored a whopping 54 goals and provided 13 assists in 52 appearances last season, a haul which took his club tally to 97 strikes in 102 outings. Should United stump up the £67m, Gyokeres will be reunited with Red Devils gaffer Ruben Amorim. 3 Amorim, under whom Gyokeres flourished, took charge of United last November following the club's sacking of Erik ten Hag. Despite being eager to leave Lisbon, Gyokeres admits he's not sure what the future holds. He said late last month: "It's football, I'm still here. "I don't know what's going to happen. Nobody can predict the future."
