
Four takeaways from Boston College coach Bill O'Brien's appearance at ACC Football Kickoff
Versatile defense could be the key
Dealing with player losses following graduation and the NFL Draft is par for the course for college coaches, so O'Brien isn't fazed by the departure of top defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku, who the Cowboys selected in the second round.

O'Brien expects his versatile defense will have no trouble filling the hole left by Ezeiruaku, who was the 2024 ACC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 16.5 sacks.

'I feel very confident in our ability to play good defense this year,' O'Brien said. 'We have a lot of versatile players. We have guys that can play safety and corner. We have linebackers that can play in the box. They can walk out on receivers. We have nickels that can play safety, that can play corner. We have defensive linemen that can play inside, that can play off the edge. And over the course of 30 practices in training camp, that'll all come together, and we'll be ready to go when the season kicks off.'

BC's NIL money is awarded to players who 'earn it,' including by attending class
O'Brien called revenue sharing and name, image, and likeness legislation in college football 'the wild, wild west,' especially when compared with the NFL's model.
'There's all different things that go into the NFL, but it's very uniform. There's rules,' he said. 'That's something that I believe has to happen eventually in college football — that there has to be enforcement.'
Despite facing the added challenge of recruiting players to a private, Jesuit university with high academic standards, O'Brien is satisfied with the way he, chief of staff Berj Najarian, and the administration have handled their NIL model.
'We do a good job of making sure the players understand it's an 'earn it' philosophy,' O'Brien said. 'Every [football player] coming into BC as a freshman, they're going to make a certain amount of money. From that point forward, they're going to earn everything they get.'
By performing well, players can earn additional money. But those performance incentives are not limited to the field.
'Going to class, being on time for meetings,' O'Brien said. 'You don't necessarily have to be an All-American right away. Just got to be a good guy, a good locker room guy, good teammate, somebody that's a contributing member of the team. And if you do that, you'll earn more and more as you go through your career at BC.'
The difference between a winning and losing record is minor details
The Eagles haven't finished above .500 in conference play since 2009, when they went 5-3 in the ACC and 9-5 overall.
O'Brien has tried to convey to his players that the difference between finishing 4-4 in the conference — as BC did last season — and winning 10 or 11 games overall comes down to a handful of mistakes.

Three of the Eagles' six losses last season were by less than a touchdown, and five were by 10 points or fewer.
'There's a small margin of error for all the teams, and we have to figure out how to be on the right side of that margin, whether it's turnovers or missed opportunities on defense, maybe a lack of communication here and there,' O'Brien said. 'My point is it comes down to seven or eight, maybe nine plays in a game that make a big difference.'
O'Brien likes to leverage local connections in recruiting
It's no secret that BC faces stiff competition in recruiting from schools that can offer more NIL money, larger stadiums, or more trophies in their cases, so to lock down his top prospects, O'Brien presents BC as the whole package: a great education in a major city, where players can earn money and play in a Power Five conference.
While O'Brien recruits all over the country, he also likes to sell local players on the idea that their families can attend every game, and he tries to use BC's identity to his advantage.
'We recruit at every Catholic school in the country,' he said.
O'Brien also said he doesn't put much stock into prospect rankings and stars.
'I want to see what they do on the field when they get there,' he said. 'We have a process of how we evaluate prospects, and I think we're on the right path.'

I definitely model my game and watch a lot of his tape just because he's so special at the top of his route and after the catch and I feel like I have similar movement patterns as him. But then there's other guys like Mark Andrews and George Kittle that are workhorses. You can learn something from a wide receiver out here on a release. You can learn from everybody, so I try to pick a little bit of everything but I would say definitely Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews.' Ferguson and Kelce are both around 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, so their frames are akin to one another. Kelce has been arguably the best tight end of this generation, so Ferguson has a long way to go before he reaches the All-Pro's level. But it's never a bad thing to model your game after a superstar. Both players are savvy route runners and incredibly dangerous after the catch, which the Rams are sure to take full advantage of his skill set this season. If he becomes anything like the player that Kelce is, Los Angeles will have hit a home run in the second round. Bears aren't sweating slow offensive start at training camp
Rome wasn't built in a day and the Bears' 2025 offense isn't going to be built that quickly either. That was the message from offensive coordinator Declan Doyle after Friday's training camp practice. All eyes are on the Bears offense after the arrival of Doyle, head coach Ben Johnson, first-round tight end Colston Loveland, and several offensive linemen arrived to help quarterback Caleb Williams put up better results in his second NFL season. Those eyes have seen a lot of scuffling through the first three days of practice and Johnson pulled the first team from one drill, but Doyle said that is not any reason for alarm. "No, I wouldn't say that right now," Doyle said, via Courtney Cronin of "This whole thing is a progress, and for the next six weeks we're going to get a ton of reps on all of these plays. We're going to try to master these things. The first time you guys did anything, you know, you're not quite a master at it yet. It takes a little bit of work and progression to get there." Doyle said it will be an issue for the coaching staff if the team repeats mistakes, but that the expectation is that it will take time for everything to run as smoothly as the team wants it to be come September. If that's what happens, all of the summer errors will be chalked up to necessary growing pains in Chicago.

Steelers GM Omar Khan open to Aaron Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than one year: 'He's a young 41'
Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old. He's entering his 21st NFL season. The four-time league MVP said on "The Pat McAfee Show" last month that he's "pretty sure" 2025 will also be his final season. At the time, Rodgers said he didn't ask Pittsburgh for more than one season, hence the one-year deal he signed ahead of Steelers minicamp. But recently-extended Steelers general manager Omar Khan said Friday on "The Rich Eisen Show" that he'd be open to Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than just one season. Eisen asked, "Do you envision any scenario in which this could be a longer stay in Pittsburgh, if [Rodgers is] so inclined?" Khan replied: "Obviously we have to see how the season goes, but absolutely. He's a young 41, and we're obviously taking it year-by-year, and that's where we're at. "But we're obviously not closing the door on anything." While earning 10 Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl ring, Rodgers spent the first 18 seasons of his Hall of Fame-caliber career with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him No. 24 overall in 2005. It looked like he'd end his illustrious NFL playing days in New York, but his two-year stint with the Jets didn't go according to plan. Rodgers tore his Achilles on the Jets' fourth snap of the 2023 season, which he then missed while recovering from the heartbreaking injury. Last year, he posted a 28:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio and threw for 3,897 yards while completing 63% of his passes. But his 90.5 passer rating was just below the 92.3 league average and far below his 102.6 career average. His 6.7 yards per attempt were the fewest he had averaged in a season since 2015. His return, and subsequent durability, at his age last season was impressive. His team's record was not. The Jets finished 5-12 and didn't sniff the playoffs. There was a long wait this offseason to see if Rodgers would come back for another NFL season, either with the Jets or with another franchise. Eisen asked Khan how he remained so patient for Rodgers to make a decision. "Somebody asked me about that the other day, and I can say we don't really view our patience as a weakness," Khan said Friday. "I view it as a strength. And we had some conversations, and we were engaged with him and just felt really good about our chances. And we went through the evaluation process early and felt like he was going to be the right guy for us if we could land the plane. ... He did a great job of communicating with us. I don't know what the narrative was out there." But that's when Eisen cut Khan off. Eisen asked for the fourth-year Steelers GM to clarify what he meant by Rodgers' "great job of communicating." Eisen asked if Rodgers was reaching out to the organization. "It's just open dialogue," said Khan, who was working in the Steelers' football operations and player personnel department when they won two Super Bowls in the 2000s. "We knew where he stood, what was going on with him. And he knew where we were, and it just felt really comfortable with the process." Rodgers took what longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin called a "productive" visit on March 28. At the spring owners meetings the next week, team president Art Rooney II was asked if Rodgers would sign with the team, and Rooney indicated Pittsburgh was on that trajectory. In mid-April, though, Rodgers went on the "McAfee Show" and mentioned that retirement could still be a possibility while noting that he wanted to focus on his personal life at that time. The Steelers waited until the sixth round to draft a quarterback — Ohio State's Will Howard — and ultimately came to an agreement with Rodgers in June. Rodgers is hard to read and has been for quite some time. Whether he plays beyond this year is anyone's best guess. But Khan is open to the idea. He, of course, wants to see how this season goes first.
