Unranked but Underrated: Colorado receives only one vote in preseason AP Top 25

Colorado concluded the 2024 season with a 9-4 record and a No. 25 ranking in the final AP Poll, marking the program's best finish since 2016 when it went 10-4. Despite that improvement, Colorado begins the 2025 season unranked in both major preseason polls. However, the team did receive some consideration, earning one vote in the AP Poll and 12 votes in the USA TODAY US LBM Coaches Poll. These results suggest that while the Buffaloes are not viewed as a consensus top-25 team entering the season, they are on the radar and could move up quickly with early success. Among the other Big 12 programs, several earned spots in the preseason AP Poll. Arizona State leads the group at No. 11, followed by Kansas State at No. 17, Iowa State at No. 22, and Texas Tech at No. 23. Both BYU and Utah fell just outside the top 25, receiving votes but not enough to secure a ranking. Colorado enters the 2025 season without several key contributors from last year's roster, particularly on offense. Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and wide receivers Jimmy Horn Jr., Will Sheppard, and LaJohntay Wester all moved on to the NFL. Defensively, the Buffaloes also lost significant talent with the departures of Shilo Sanders, B.J. Green II, Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig and Hunter. That's a significant loss of talent from last season, especially at key positions like quarterback and wide receiver. However, if anyone can handle adversity, it is Deion Sanders and his coaching staff, who continue to improve year after year. The starting quarterback for the Buffaloes in Week 1 against Georgia Tech remains uncertain, as head coach Deion Sanders has yet to announce his choice. A fierce competition is underway between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and highly touted true freshman Julian Lewis. The offensive line is primarily made up of transfers, except for standout freshman left tackle Jordan Seaton. The wide receiver group features a blend of transfers and returning players, including Omarion Miller, Dre'lon Miller, Isaiah Hardge, Kam Mikell, and Terrell Timmons Jr. In the backfield, Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden return, joined by Incarnate Word transfer DeKalon Taylor. Defensively, the team retains most of its key contributors, especially along the defensive line and in the secondary. They have also added new linebacker transfers and reinforced the safety and cornerback positions to bolster the defense. Colorado and Deion Sanders have long leveraged the transfer portal to bring in talent and address team needs. However, the 2025 roster feels different and promising. It combines eager underclassmen ready to learn and contribute with transfers seeking greater opportunities at a Big 12 program, and experienced upperclassmen who have been part of the team since Sanders took the helm. Las Vegas and major sportsbooks view this Buffalo team as average, setting their win total over/under at 5.5. There has been significant roster turnover and attention around Coach Sanders' cancer treatments, but Colorado has shown steady improvement each year under his leadership. The Big 12 feels more open than it has in a while, and while some are doubting Sanders as he begins his third season in Boulder, this team has the potential to exceed expectations. How do Penn State, Big Ten teams compare in US LBM Coaches Poll vs. AP Top 25?

Penn State is receiving sky-high expectations going into the 2025 season, as it appears that the media and coaches alike expect the Nittany Lions to be serious championship contenders. In the US LBM Coaches Poll, released Aug. 4, Penn State was ranked No. 3 behind Texas and Ohio State. The Nittany Lions received 14 first-place votes, and it's their highest preseason ranking since 1999. That Penn State team was ranked No. 4 and climbed to No. 2 after a 9-0 start. However, the wheels fell off for the Nittany Lions, who suffered three straight losses to end the regular season at 9-3 and out of championship contention. The AP Top 25 Poll, released Aug. 11, has Penn State ranked at No. 2 with 23 first-place votes — just two fewer than No. 1 Texas. This is the Nittany Lions' highest ranking in the AP preseason poll since 1997, when they started as the No. 1 team. That squad started 7-0, but blowout losses to Michigan and Michigan State ended its championship hopes. The biggest difference between the preseason polls is Penn State's ranking relative to the Big Ten. The AP poll ranks the Nittany Lions one spot above Ohio State, a team that they haven't beaten since 2016. This could be interpreted as a vote of confidence in Penn State's experienced veteran roster, or a sign of doubt for a Buckeyes team that will have many new starters. The coaches poll has them reversed, with Ohio State ranked one spot above Penn State. Regardless, we'll get to see who has the upper hand when they meet in Columbus on Nov. 1. The rest of the polls line up similarly. No. 7 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois and No. 14 Michigan are ranked the same in both polls, while Indiana is ranked No. 19 in the coaches poll and No. 20 in the AP poll. As it stands, Penn State will face three ranked teams — Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana — but it might play even more depending on how the year shakes out. In the coaches poll, Iowa is considered the No. 33 team after receiving 49 votes, whereas the Hawkeyes would be No. 42 based on their five votes in the AP poll. Nebraska (19 votes) is No. 39 in the coaches poll, but is ranked higher at No. 34 (23 votes) in the AP poll. Where these teams stand is very relevant when it comes to Penn State's end-of-year resume, which will help determine their College Football Playoff seeding. Simply put, the Nittany Lions will be rooting for Iowa and Nebraska to be ranked in the top 25 when they play them. At best, Penn State would add two ranked wins to its resume. Conversely, Penn State wouldn't be punished too hard for having ranked losses to these teams. There's also an important change to the CFP format this year that will likely benefit the Big Ten and SEC conferences. Now, the top four teams will receive first-round byes regardless of if they won their conference. Last year, Penn State was ranked No. 4, but didn't get a bye because they lost the Big Ten championship game. Of course, the CFP Committee decides the CFP rankings, but the Nittany Lions' spot in these preseason polls will certainly impact their perception, especially in the scenario that Penn State drops games and needs some help to get a more favorable seeding. Regardless of which poll you look at, Penn State is going to have a target on its back as one of the top teams in the nation and is going to get every opponent's best shot.

Blue Jays reportedly promote No. 1 prospect Trey Yesavage to Triple-A, possibly eyeing major-league call-up

Major League Baseball's trade deadline passed 10 days ago, but the Toronto Blue Jays could still make an impact addition to their pitching staff, thanks to their minor-league system. The Blue Jays are promoting pitcher Troy Yesavage to Triple-A, which puts him in line for a call-up when the minor-league season ends or perhaps sooner than that, depending on his performance. Yesavage, 22, is ranked as Toronto's No. 1 minor-league prospect by and No. 2 by The Athletic. He was the team's 2024 first-round pick (No. 20 overall) out of East Carolina. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Progressing from low Single-A through Double-A so far this season, the right-hander has a 3.01 ERA in 18 starts with 134 strikeouts over 80 2/3 innings (an average of 15 Ks per 9). Yesavage's workload could be a concern as he pitches through his first professional season. The most innings he's thrown were the 93 1/3 innings he pitched last year for East Carolina. However, the Blue Jays apparently had an innings limit in mind when keeping him out of game action for approximately three weeks around the All-Star break, according to The Athletic. Also, though Yesavage has started 18 games this season, he wouldn't necessarily fill that role with the Blue Jays. Toronto manager John Schneider could use him as an opener, pitching one or two innings to start a game or pitch him in relief. The team possibly tipped that off as a consideration when Yesavage came out of the bullpen to pitch five innings last week. The Blue Jays may not need Yesavage as a starting pitcher either, with a rotation stocked with Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer. Toronto also acquired 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians at the MLB trade deadline and he could be available late in the season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Additionally, Alex Manoah is working his way back from reconstructive surgery as another possible reinforcement. With a 4.28 ERA, Toronto's pitching staff ranks 23rd in MLB. The starters are 22nd with a 4.43 ERA and the bullpen's 4.06 ERA ranks 18th. So there is room for improvement. The Blue Jays' offense is largely responsible for their success with 583 runs scored so far this season, giving them a +44 run differential (with 539 runs allowed). The Blue Jays go into Monday's MLB slate at 69-50, leading the Boston Red Sox by four games in the AL East and a 6.5-game lead over the third-place New York Yankees.
