TN approaches SC, accuses Centre of withholding funds
New Delhi, May 21 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Centre to pay Rs 2,291.30 crore, accusing it of withholding funds for various education schemes.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in the state has accused the Centre of withholding funds under the Samagra Shiksha Yojana for non-implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and PM Shri.
In the original petition filed under Article 131 of the Constitution, the state sought a direction to the Central government to pay Rs 2,291.30 crore, including six per cent per annum interest on the principal amount of Rs 2,151.59 crore from May 1 this year.

SC junks plea challenging NTA practice on conduct of NEET-UG
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking the publication of the final answer key of NEET-UG 2025 before results are declared. A vacation bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan asked petitioner Najiya Nasre as to why the high court wasn't approached in this case. Replying to the query, senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for Nasre, said the issue raised in the petition has 'all-India ramifications'. 'Many students are involved and would adversely be impacted by this,' he argued. The top court told the petitioner that she should approach the concerned high court for relief. The petitioner had moved the top court challenging the practice followed by the National Testing Agency in which the final answer keys of the exam are published after the final result is announced. Opposing this, the NTA said it was only for the betterment of students that the final answer keys are published after final results are declared. The petitioner said this leads to revaluation of ranks, leading to 'serious consequences' and in violation of Article 14. Also in top court Plea over Ambanis' security rejected The Court on Friday pulled up a litigant for filling repeated pleas and binned his petition seeking revocation of the 'Z' plus security cover provided to industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his family, saying arm-twisting of the court's process cannot be allowed. A top court also clarified that it has authority over who is provided which security cover.

Congress in damage control mode over Satheesan's Jamaat remarks
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As leader of opposition V D Satheesan's attempt to 'whitewash' Jamaat-e-Islami, backfired politically in Nilambur, the Congress has started damage control efforts. KPCC president Sunny Joseph has met powerful Muslim and Christian leaders in this regard. The move comes days before the visit of Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi to Nilambur which is part of her LS constituency. Sunny Joseph, who is close to Thamarassery Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil, met the latter on Friday. The meeting came after the Catholic Congress under the powerful Thamarassery Diocese issued a strong statement against Congress - Welfare Party tie-up. The KPCC chief reportedly clarified the party's stand to the bishop. He also sought the Church's support. According to sources close to the Church, Sunny Joseph held talks with Catholic Congress leaders. The KPCC president also met Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, the president of Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulama, on Thursday. There is criticism among UDF partners that the opposition leader's 'certificate' to the Jamaat-e-Islami was an unwanted one. They are of the view that it gave both the CPM and BJP a political weapon which could have a far-reaching effect even in national politics. 'There is still suspicion over the controversial stand of Jamaat on Indian democracy, religious state and Constitution,' a Congress PAC member told TNIE. 'It is no surprise that almost all prominent Muslim community organisations including Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulma, and Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen, and the Catholic Congress, a lay organisation of Syro-Malabar Catholics of Thamarassery Diocese, had come out strongly against the Jamaat-e-Islami- Congress alleged tie-up,' he added. The Congress-UDF leadership has decided not to entertain questions about Jamaat-e-Islami, Welfare Party and Congress 'tie-up'. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal's attempt to evade questions about the controversy, and senior leader K Muraleedharan playing down the issue are seen as part of this strategy. The party has decided to focus on the governance of the LDF government. There is also apprehension that though Venugopal's attack against CM's alleged anti- Malappuram remark was a success, the Jamaat controversy spoiled the edge. 'There are chances that the RSS -BJP may use the Jamaat controversy against the Gandhi family and the Congress in north India,' a senior Congress leader told TNIE. 'As state assembly elections are approaching, we do not want any kind of political debate on that,' he said.

Tribal villagers happy for sanctioning road
Paderu (ASR district): Tribal residents of Kalyanagummi village in Gumma Panchayat, Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, expressed heartfelt gratitude to district Collector AS Dinesh Kumar for approving the long-pending road construction between Kalyanagummi and Neredlapudi village in Devarapalli mandal. The approval was granted during a special district-level past committee meeting chaired by the Collector on Friday, bringing cheer to the residents, who had long struggled with poor connectivity. In a touching gesture, villagers stood in a line with folded hands, offering their thanks to the Collector and Tribal Welfare Engineering Officer Venu Gopal Rao for addressing their decades-old plea. Until now, the villagers of Kalyanagummi had to take a lengthy and inconvenient route via Damaku in Devarapalli mandal of Vizianagaram district to reach nearby Gummu village. Recognising their plight, former ITDA PO Abhishek had sanctioned Rs One crore in July 2024 for gravel road construction. However, due to pending forest department clearances, the project had not commenced. Following protests from the villagers over the delay, the Collector convened an urgent meeting with the forest and other concerned departments to resolve the issue. With the necessary permissions now granted, construction is expected to begin soon. CPM district committee member K Govind Rao and tribal rights leader Rajarao also thanked the officials for understanding the difficulties faced by the tribal population and for taking timely action to approve the project.
