Moses Itauma, Arnold Barboza Jr - Biggest winners and losers of WBO ratings update May 2025
The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) has announced its latest ratings, clarifying the title landscapes in many of its divisions.
Following the refreshing of its lists, many fighters have shot up the rankings, whilst others have dropped away from potential title shots.
We take a look at the biggest winners and losers of the WBO's rankings for May.
Winners
Chris Billam-Smith
Chris Billam-Smith's stock has risen after defeating American cruiserweight Brandon Glanton at the end of April, with the Brit fourth with both the WBC and WBA.
But it is with the WBO where he is now ranked highest, with the organisation elevating him from fourth to first.
It was winning the WBO belt that made Billam-Smith a world champion in 2023, and the Bournemouth fighter defended his title twice before losing it to current holder Gilberto Ramirez.
Highly ranked across all four organisations, Billam-Smith appears to be back in title contention six months after losing his world champion status.
Ryan Garner
Chris Billam-Smith's old haunt, the Bournemouth International Centre, appears to have a new star to fill its seats.
Fresh off the back of a sellout in March, Ryan Garner returns there in July for all-British clash with Reece Bellotti at super featherweight.
EBU European champion, Garner has entered the WBO's rankings at number 10. Unbeaten in his 17 professional bouts, Garner's hopes of a shot at a world title have been bolstered by his entry into the WBO's top 10.
Moses Itauma
Shortly after Moses Itauma's brutal second-round knockout of Mike Balogun on Saturday night, WBO president Gustabo Olivieri took to Twitter to confirm his status as the organisation's number one at heavyweight.
Olivieri wrote: 'Moses Itauma has climbed the WBO rankings with talent, discipline, and electrifying performances. Now the #1 world-rated heavyweight contender, his moment is approaching. It's only a matter of time before he gets his shot and the world sees a new star emerge.'
Despite the 20-year-old's number one status, Olivieri confirmed that Joseph Parker remains the WBO's mandatory challenger for reigning champion Oleksandr Usyk.
He added: 'For the record: While Moses Itauma holds the WBO's #1 world ranking in the heavyweight division, this alone does not confer mandatory status. That designation requires defeating top-rated contender(s). Joe Parker remains the official mandatory and retains priority, per WBO rules.'
Losers
Christian M'Billi
French fighter Christian M'Billi's exploits with other organisations has cost him his spot as the second-best super middleweight in the eyes of the WBO.
The 30-year-old remains unbeaten in 28 professional bouts, but has not fought since August 2024. M'Billi is set to return to action this summer, facing Maciej Sulęcki in Canada on Saturday, June 27.
Whoever wins that bout will receive the WBC's interim super middleweight title, with the full title held by Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez, the undisputed champion that also holds the WBO, WBA, and IBF titles.
In a similar vein, heavyweight Justis Huni has lost his number one ranking with the WBO after stepping in last minute to face Fabio Wardley next month for the interim WBA heavyweight title. That has allowed the aforementioned Moses Itauma to rise from second to first in the WBO's ratings.
Arnold Barboza Jr
Arnold Barboza Jr has enjoyed a long relationship with the WBO, working his way up their ratings in the super lightweight division. In 2020, he earned the WBO international belt, before moving on to the organisation's inter-continental belt.
Victory over Jack Catterall in February saw Barboza Jr pick up the interim world title, teeing up a bout with reigning WBO champion Teofimo Lopez.
Number one with the organisation before becoming interim champion, Barboza's defeat to Lopez at the start of May has seen the American tumble to fifth in the WBO's super lightweight ratings.

In this economy, and with more powerful PlayStations and Xboxes available for less, that's quite an outlay. I could make a financial argument for the Switch 2. Its predecessor, the original Switch, has been around for eight years now. If this new console has the same shelf life, that amounts to about £50 a a pound a week. Although this is mostly just a bigger, better Switch, it's bigger and better in exciting ways. The larger, higher-definition screen is tremendously good for handheld play. Its more powerful innards mean that it can handle some very visually demanding games, including Cyberpunk 2077, which is also available now. It will come in two varieties: just the console and the console bundled with Mario Kart World. The former will cost £395.99 and the latter £429.99 Can the PS5 and Xbox Series X run these games even better? Yes. But a PC can run them even better again. And none have the easy, well, switchability of the Switch 2, which can move from your TV to your handbag in an instant. Technological domination isn't everything. Then there are the Switch 2's innovations, like its new mouse mode. The detachable Joy-Con controllers can be laid on their sides and moved and clicked just like the mouse for your desktop computer. It adds to the sense that Nintendo has made the Swiss Army knife of consoles. Everything for all occasions. The real draw, though, is the games. Neither the PlayStation nor the Xbox will ever get Mario Kart World, which is a loss for them. This first open-world entry in the madcap racing series is — much like the Switch 2 itself — an improvement on its already great predecessor. And think of all the joys to come! A new Donkey Kong game in July, which looks as though it delivers on its hero's full destructive potential. Followed by, presumably, new Mario and Zelda releases in future. Get saving.

Sarina Wiegman defends England's build-up to Euro 2025 and insists her Lionesses have 'moved on' after string of key players withdraw before the tournament
Sarina Wiegman insists England's Euro 2025 preparations are not being undermined by a crisis as she sought to move on from the most challenging week of her reign. The women's head coach revealed the 23 names she will take to Switzerland next month to defend the title they famously won three years ago but the atmosphere around St George's Park is considerably different now to how it was back then. Aside from seeing England lose 2-1 in Spain on Tuesday, Wiegman has had to contend with the unexpected retirements of goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby, as well the withdrawal of defender Millie Bright – they have all been huge characters in the Dutchwoman's four-year reign. This has been a remarkable narrative and while Wiegman bristled when the comparison was made, you did not have to think too hard about what the reaction would be like if, for example, Jordan Pickford, Jack Grealish and John Stones made similar decisions before a men's tournament. What could Wiegman say, then, to show that the events of the last seven days have not left an indelible mark on confidence and planning? 'That is not the case,' she insisted. 'We know what is happening in the team. I think – and hope – there is competition going on in the team. I feel very comfortable. I'm very happy with the team and I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to it. For me, it doesn't feel like a crisis at all.' Perhaps but the only way she will be able to prove that emphatically is through what her team do on the pitch; they face Jamaica on June 29 before starting what appears to be a 'Group of Death' against France on July 5 in Zurich; The Netherlands and Wales are their other opponents. It was clear to see Wiegman would love nothing more than to talk about the future – 'can we talk about the players that are here?' she asked at one stage – but it's very hard to do when figures as big as Earps, Kirby and Bright are suddenly no longer available. Earps, of the three, raises the biggest eyebrow. Wiegman, theoretically, could still call her into the squad, as UEFA have a clause that allows goalkeepers injured in the tournament to be replaced but it won't happen, as the pair haven't spoken since the 32-year-old went public with her decision. Plenty believe Earps made her decision from a fit of pique, given that Wiegman had made it clear to the PSG keeper she was no longer first choice, that role having gone to Chelsea's Hannah Hampton. You also wonder why a player would retire, as being an international is the ultimate recognition. 'There were no calls (with Earps) – that is done now,' said Wiegman. 'There are two different situations and it is sad they are not in the team. I will always cherish what we have had we had such an incredible journey. But as this moment, we have moved on. 'You have to look at every individual situation. Some will say 'ok, I've had such an incredible time but it's time to move on.' That is what we hope – there is a natural progression and transition within the group. It's up the players to make the decision themselves.'

Man United's hunt for Mbeumo heats up
Manchester United 's initial £45m bid for Brentford 's Bryan Mbeumo, with a further £10m in add-ons, has been rejected. Brentford values Mbeumo at over £60m and may extend his contract by an additional year to retain him. Thomas Frank has acknowledged that Mbeumo's sale is possible but would be "expensive". Mbeumo is attractive to United due to his Premier League experience, versatility across the forward line, and strong fitness record. Manchester United aims to bolster their attacking options following the expected departures of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony and are also targeting a goalkeeper, wing-back, and midfielder.
