BizBelia to empower Brunei youth: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah

The monarch said the scheme offers local youth entrepreneurs access to financial resources from Brunei's financial institutions. Sultan Hassanal hopes it will stimulate the growth and development of youth enterprises and set an example for other financial institutions to involve youth more actively. With proper guidance and robust support from relevant parties, the Ruler is confident that youth entrepreneurs will shine not only nationally but also on the international stage. He voiced these views in a titah at the 20th National Youth Day on Saturday (Aug 16). The present generation of youth, the monarch noted, possesses a strong spirit and great leadership potential. The positive transformation shown by the youth signals their willingness to shoulder the heavy responsibilities of leadership, a key element in Realising Brunei Vision 2035. The government remains committed to empowering youth and providing a conducive environment for their growth. In pursuing Wawasan Brunei 2035, youth are pivotal as Drivers of Economic Transformation. Sultan Hassanal welcomed the shift in mindset from job seekers to job creators through entrepreneurship and business ventures. Acknowledging the challenges in obtaining financing to start a business—particularly for youth who lack business performance records or collateral— Sultan Hassanal announced the establishment of BizBelia, a Shariah-compliant micro-financing scheme for youth entrepreneurs. The scheme results from a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Bank Usahawan Berhad. The Ruler also voiced concerns about exploitation of youth by criminal syndicates offering lucrative rewards. Sultan Hassanal cited reports of local youths involved in cross-border drug smuggling orchestrated by international trafficking groups. The monarch also warned of overseas job scam syndicates targeting youth, noting that such schemes threaten the future of Bruneian youth and the nation's social harmony. Efforts to combat these syndicates must be strengthened through education and awareness, law enforcement, and community support. Youth themselves should bolster resilience through religious knowledge and the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) values to safeguard a successful and dignified future. The Ruler urged youth to cooperate with all segments of society, including senior citizens, in shaping Brunei's harmonious future. He extended heartfelt congratulations to all Bruneian youths for their commitment to developing and advancing the nation, stressing that youth remain the pillar of hope for Brunei's bright and glorious future. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Rigid rules: A repressive Merdeka celebration

COMMENT | The numerous and overly complex restrictions set by the Information Department under the Respecting National Symbols guidelines have turned what should be a direct and sincere expression of Malaysian patriotism into a heavy burden. Instead of inspiring unity, these extensive rules have created hesitation and fear among the rakyat, raising the question of whether such an atmosphere is truly the intended outcome for national unity. Merdeka celebrations should be a time for unity and the free expression of patriotic spirit. Yet rigid and conservative regulations have allowed certain groups to exploit the occasion for divisive campaigns to advance political agendas. This year's National Day risks becoming one of the most repressive in Malaysia's history, marked by disputes and restrictions, and stripped of the joy and sense of unity it should embody. Under the current guidelines, Malaysians are prohibited from...

Jeffrey (right) during the recording of the KBI programme. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): The 2025 Sabah Day celebration will serve as a vital platform to strengthen understanding of Sabah's history. Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan stated that this year's celebration will feature historical exhibitions, seminars and special reading materials to provide the public with opportunities to understand Sabah's journey to independence. 'This year, the event will take place on August 30 and 31 at Padang Merdeka, Kota Kinabalu. 'This year's exhibition is more comprehensive than previous ones, featuring books, documents and historical visual materials to help the community, especially the youth, better appreciate the state's history. 'Besides exhibitions, special seminars will discuss key events, state figures and Sabah's development in political, economic and social aspects. 'The celebration will also be enlivened by the Sabah Day Run, bringing together participants from all districts. All runners will gather at Padang Merdeka carrying the Sabah flag as a symbol of unity and pride on the culmination day. 'The run alone is expected to attract over 4,000 participants from various districts, while the total number of visitors throughout the celebration is projected to exceed 10,000,' he said after recording the Sabah Day Documentary and the Kami Bah Ini (KBI) programme at the Integrated Complex of the Ministry of Communications here today. According to Jeffrey, other activities include district-level sports competitions, traditional food stalls and concerts featuring local artists and patriotic songs. As chairman of the 2025 Sabah Day Celebration Main Committee, he noted that this year's celebration uniquely emphasizes historical and educational aspects. 'Sabah Day should not only be celebrated but also integrated into the school curriculum so our children can learn about the state's identity from their school days. 'I also call on the youth, if possible, to create songs themed around Sabah Day and Sabah Independence Day,' he added. Jeffrey hopes the celebration will not only become a vibrant annual event but also a platform to reinforce historical heritage and build the spirit of patriotism among Sabahans.
