1,274 notices issued in special operation on seat belts in buses
PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has issued 1,274 compound notices under a special operation to ensure the use of seat belts by drivers and passengers of express buses, tour buses and goods vehicles since July 1.
JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said 1,000 notices were issued to passengers for not wearing seat belts, 262 notices to drivers for the same offence, and 12 notices to express buses that failed to install seat belts, Bernama reported.
'For passengers, 878 notices were issued to express bus passengers, 107 to tour bus passengers, and 15 to passengers or drivers of goods vehicles.
'For drivers, 33 notices were issued to express bus drivers, 24 to tour bus drivers and 205 to goods vehicle drivers,' he said.
JPJ is cracking down on buses following the fatal crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students last month.
The bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, along the East-West Highway, when it crashed near Tasik Banding in Gerik.
Initial findings revealed that the bus was travelling at twice the permitted speed limit and this was believed to be one of the causes of the accident.

Klang Valley drug syndicate busted with RM4.66m syabu seized
KUALA LUMPUR: Police dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate in the Klang Valley after arresting three men and confiscating 145.68kg of syabu valued at RM4.66 million. The operation, conducted on July 24, led to the seizure of drugs hidden in a car and a rented house in Puncak Jalil. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said two Malaysians, aged 32 and 61, and a 34-year-old Indonesian were detained at a shopping centre in Jalan Kuchai Lama. A search of their vehicle uncovered 10.34kg of syabu concealed in a cloth bag inside the boot. Further raids at a double-storey house in Puncak Jalil yielded an additional 135.34kg of the drug packed in 122 plastic packets. 'The total seizure could supply around 728,400 addicts,' said Mohamed Usuf. Investigations revealed the syndicate had rented the Puncak Jalil property since October last year for RM2,000 monthly, using it as a storage hub before distributing drugs locally and to Indonesia. The group is believed to have been active since May, sourcing supplies from overseas. Two of the suspects tested positive for drugs, with one having a prior drug-related warrant. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the residence itself was of limited use as it only retains footage for 24 hours, making it difficult to aid in the ongoing investigation. 'The CCTV system at the house was installed in the 1990s and has limited storage capacity,' he told a press conference today. "The incident is believed to have occurred more than 24 hours after the police report was made by the owner of the house, which meant the footage had already been overwritten,' he told a press conference here today. According to Mohamed Usuf, the house is an old house that is rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. "So far, the police have recorded statements from three individuals, namely Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard and a maid. The police are also analysing the evidence received, including fingerprints, and this may take some time," he said. According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. It is understood that the incident was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the gate at the back of the house had been cut and her employer's room was ransacked.
