Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI) The police on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that permission will be granted to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to hold a 'peaceful assembly" regarding the situation in Gaza on August 20 at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai.
The assembly has been planned to express concerns over the alleged 'genocide" in Gaza.
A bench headed by Justice Ravindra Ghuge was hearing a plea filed by the CPI(M), challenging the denial of permission to hold a demonstration, citing law and order issues.
The CPI(M) had argued that citizens have the constitutional right to protest at designated spots, even on issues that may not align with government policies.
Additional public prosecutor S V Gavand informed the court that permission would be granted.
Following this, the petitioner's counsel, Mihir Desai, said that the peaceful assembly would take place between 3 pm to 6 pm.
The court had earlier raised concerns over inflammatory speeches and potential disruptions during the assembly, and on Tuesday, it asked the petitioner to give an assurance.
Desai assured the court that the meeting would be peaceful and the organisers would adhere to draft regulations for public meetings, agitations and processions proposed under the Maharashtra Police Act.

According to the draft rules, organisers are responsible for ensuring the protest is peaceful and does not adversely impact law and order.
The petition was filed after the police had initially refused permission for the protest, citing concerns that the demonstration could spark a law and order issue, as it was perceived to challenge India's foreign policy. No foreign nationals in Bihar SIR: CPI (ML) Liberation questions PM's 'infiltrator' remark

There has not been cited a single case of illegal immigrants in the Bihar SIR, CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation leader Dipankar Bhattacharya said on Saturday (August 16, 2025), challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on infiltrators in the country. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation general secretary was addressing a press conference in Delhi, a day before opposition parties were set to launch a Vote Adhikar Yatra in Bihar against the ongoing SIR exercise. 'PM Modi gave his longest Independence Day speech, but the important point is that the theme of Independence Day is now being reduced to partition,' Mr. Bhattacharya said. 'It is as if the government is trying to finish the incomplete agenda of partition,' he said. The Left leader said that the 65 lakh voters who have been deleted after the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar, none of them have been claimed to be foreign nationals by the Election Commission of India (ECI). 'But once again, Modi Ji has brought back that agenda, completely unsubstantiated, the bogey of illegal immigration, infiltration. And the things that they are doing to change our demography, taking away all jobs, occupying land, getting married to women and forcing conversion,' Mr. Bhattacharya said. 'This is a total anti-immigrant agenda of the RSS and BJP. This is what led to partition, perhaps they want another partition...' he said. He also wondered how the government came to conclude on the quantum of foreign nationals entering India illegally, when there has been no Census since 2011. 'It has created a tone of terror in the country, it has created major insecurity, and when you sort of view it together with the ongoing SIR, the backdoor NRC, the ongoing so-called police verification drive, the MHA circular, so it creates before us the danger of a huge social division and the creation of a permanent category of disenfranchised people,' he said. The CPI(ML) leader also challenged the ECI's claim that political parties have not raised any objections to the claims being submitted during the SIR underway and said there is no provision for parties or the booth level agents, or BLAs, to appeal on behalf of the voter. 'Zero complaints from BLAs, then that will be one of the biggest lies of the whole SIR campaign... They thought they could show zero error by showing zero complaint, but the errors have already been exposed,' he said, referring to cases like that of Mintoo Paswan, who has been declared dead in the SIR. Talking about the Voter Adhikar Yatra, scheduled to be launched in Bihar by the Mahagathbandhan on Sunday (August 17, 2025), he said, 'We will take out a yatra in each of the nine divisions of Bihar.' He added, 'We will hold public meetings, meet locals, and have nukkad sabhas. We will also try to find what kind of problems are being faced by voters in the SIR exercise.' On Friday (August 15, 2025), in his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Mr. Modi said his government has decided to start a high-powered demographic mission to tackle illegal infiltration.

Trump greets Putin with red carpet, Ukrainians feel betrayed

Agency: PTI Kyiv, Aug 16 (AP) In Kyiv, Ukrainians living under near daily Russian bombardment watched with astonishment as their country's most important ally rolled out a red carpet in Alaska for the man they blame for over three years of war, bloodshed and loss. Natalya Lypei, 66, a Kyiv resident, did a double-take. But the images flashing on her phone screen were real: US President Donald Trump greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin warmly and clapped as the Russian leader approached him, after having been escorted into the country by four American fighter jets. Trump also ignored the arrest warrant issued for Putin by the International Criminal Court that has kept him mostly confined at home or in nations that are strong allies. 'How can you welcome a tyrant like that?" she asked, echoing the thoughts of many Kyiv residents. The red carpet treatment, the lack of concrete decisions for Ukraine and, most significantly, neglecting the significance of sanctions — a policy that could turn the tide in Kyiv's favour — have felt like a betrayal for Ukrainians who have borne enormous suffering in the almost three-and-a-half years since Russia's full-scale invasion. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian servicemen, the country's bravest and most skilled, have been killed and wounded, thousands of civilians have been killed in Russian strikes, and a fifth of the country is under occupation, severing families, properties and Ukraine's territorial integrity. On Ukrainian social media, memes of Putin and Trump walking down a red carpet strewn with dead Ukrainian bodies were widely shared. Zelenskyy had anticipated the meeting would be a boon for Putin and that there would be very little in the way of results. Speaking to reporters in the days leading up to the meeting, he said it would end up being a public relations victory for the Russian leader. Above all else, he was seeking a photo on American soil — Which he got in Friday's meeting. It was the first time in a decade that Putin had stepped foot in the U.S., ending international isolation spurred by the 2022 Ukraine invasion; in other words, it was a win. For Lypei, whose serviceman son was killed last year, it was like attending another funeral, a fresh loss. This time, her country's hopes for a just peace. 'It hurts me a lot that my child died in a full-scale war, and today we saw a new funeral," she said. Her 34-year old son fought with Ukraine's 79th Brigade and was killed in the Donetsk region, the very area Putin wants Ukraine to vacate as a condition for a truce. 'I do not wish anyone that sorrow, that sadness, those tears," she said. Natalya Cucil, 60, another Kyiv resident said she was surprised that Trump did not produce any results from the meeting, despite his stated efforts to end the war. 'There are no results and we don't know if there will be, although we always expect something and hope for it," she said. Pensioner Anatolii Kovalenko, 72, said no matter what was discussed between the two leaders, it is clear his country's adversary has won in the sphere of public relations. 'Putin won this meeting 100 per cent," he said.(AP) RD RD view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Kerala Sports Minister Assures Lionel Messi-Led Argentina Will Come In November With 'New Sponsor'

Last Updated: Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman confirmed Lionel Messi and the Argentina football team will visit Kerala in November, with new sponsorship and security arrangements. Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman reiterated on Saturday that the Argentina football team, led by captain Lionel Messi, will arrive in Kerala in November for a football match. Last week, the Congress leadership, including state party president Sunny Joseph, criticised Abdurahiman, urging him to clarify the high expectations raised regarding Messi's visit. In response, the Minister explained that Messi's travel plans to other Indian states are part of a personal tour and not officially connected with the Argentina Football Association (AFA). 'So far, the Argentina team has not said they will skip Kerala. On the contrary, the government has been informed of their arrival in November. Necessary security arrangements have already been requested for the team," stated the Minister. Abdurahiman also dismissed concerns after the initial sponsor withdrew. Earlier this week, reports suggested that Messi would land in Kolkata on the 12th, travel to Ahmedabad on the 13th, attend programmes in Mumbai on the 14th, and conclude with a visit to Delhi on the 15th, where he is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These contrasting announcements have created uncertainty, but Kerala officials remain confident that Messi and the Argentina squad will visit the state in November, highlighting the government's active coordination with the AFA. The Congress party in Kerala launched a strong attack on the state government after the AFA accused it of breaching a contract to bring Messi and the Argentina national team to the state. Leandro Peterson, the AFA's Head of Marketing, claimed the deal collapsed because the Kerala government failed to meet its contractual obligations. However, hopes have been raised again with Abdurahiman confirming the event will take place.
