Apple introduces video call support with specialist for shoppers in India
In a release, Apple said India is the second country to get this service, building on the company's expanding retail presence here.
Earlier this year, the company launched the Apple Store app in India for easier and more personalised browsing, buying and support experience.
'Apple today introduced Shop with a Specialist over Video in India, offering customers a new way to shop for Apple products on the Apple Store online. The service connects customers with an Apple Store team member via a secure, one-way video call to browse the latest Apple products, including the iPhone 16 lineup; discover new features; and learn about Apple's trade-in program, financing options, and more – all from the comfort of their homes," Apple said in a release.
During the session, customers can get tailored, personalised advice, enabling them to compare models and learn more about available purchase options to decide on the product that suits their needs. The service, offered in English, will support customers on iOS and non-iOS devices.

Geoffrey Hinton, regarded by many as the 'godfather of artificial intelligence' (AI), has warned that the technology could get out of hand if chatbots manage to develop their language. Currently, AI does its thinking in English, allowing developers to track what the technology is thinking, but there could come a point where humans might not understand what AI is planning to do, as per Mr Hinton. "Now it gets more scary if they develop their own internal languages for talking to each other," he said on an episode of the "One Decision" podcast that aired last month. "I wouldn't be surprised if they developed their own language for thinking, and we have no idea what they're thinking." Mr Hinton added that AI has already demonstrated that it can think terrible thoughts, and it is not unthinkable that the machines could eventually think in ways that humans cannot track or interpret. Warning about AI Mr Hinton laid the foundations for machine learning that is powering today's AI-based products and applications. However, the Nobel laureate grew wary of AI's future development and cut ties with his employer, Google, in order to speak more freely on the issue. "It will be comparable with the industrial revolution. But instead of exceeding people in physical strength, it's going to exceed people in intellectual ability. We have no experience of what it's like to have things smarter than us," said Mr Hinton at the time. "I am worried that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control." Mr Hinton has been a big advocate of government regulation for the technology, especially given the unprecedented pace of development. His warning also comes in the backdrop of repeated instances of AI chatbots hallucinating thoughts. In April, OpenAI's internal tests revealed that its o3 and o4-mini AI models were hallucinating or making things up much more frequently than even the non-reasoning models, such as GPT-4o. The company said it did not have any idea why this was happening. In a technical report, OpenAI said, "more research is needed" to understand why hallucinations are getting worse as it scales up its reasoning models.

Land acquisition for mega steel plant to begin soon in Odishas Keonjhar: Majhi
Bhubaneswar/Keonjhar, Aug 3 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said land acquisition for the proposed mega steel plant in Keonjhar district would begin soon because the company concerned has already deposited the required funds for the purpose. According to official sources, the mega steel project in the district will be set up in a joint venture between JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO, with an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and an investment of over Rs 40,000 crore. The government has identified two land patches for the project, one near Taramakant and another at Patna. 'Keonjhar will get a mega steel plant, and preparation for this has already started. The process has moved two steps forward, and the company concerned has deposited necessary funds for the purpose," Majhi said after reviewing several development projects in the district. The chief minister said the establishment of the plant is expected to boost the mineral-rich district's economy and provide new employment opportunities for local youths. Majhi has taken it as a challenge to set up a mega steel mill in Keonjhar, as the district lacks large-scale industries, an official sai. The government has taken up several developmental projects, such as national highway expansion, and there is no dearth of funds for the development of Keonjhar, he said. After his arrival, Majhi chaired a district-level review meeting, met local MLAs and sought their cooperation for the district's development. He flagged off three new ambulances and a 'Maa Tarini's coconut collection vehicle', a unique initiative likely tied to the renowned Maa Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon, where coconuts are a popular offering. Cooperative taxi launch: ‘Bharat' service to rival Ola, Uber; app rollout by December
AI image India's cooperative sector is preparing to challenge ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber with the launch of a new taxi service under the brand 'Bharat' by the end of 2025, backed by a Rs 300 crore authorised capital. The initiative, fully funded by leading cooperatives, has already enrolled 200 drivers across four states, according to news agency PTI. The new venture, Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, was registered on June 6 and brings together eight major cooperatives, including the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). According to PTI, NCDC deputy managing director Rohit Gupta said, 'The key objective is to ensure better returns to drivers and provide quality, safe and affordable services to passengers.' The cooperative model will operate without any government stake. Expansion efforts are ongoing, with the cooperative reaching out to other cooperative bodies to widen its driver base. The ride-hailing service will function through a single app nationwide. A tender has been issued to finalise a technology partner for developing the app, which is expected to be ready by December. 'We will finalise the technology partner in a few days,' Gupta said, as quoted by PTI. To drive national-level marketing and strategic planning, the cooperative has engaged a technology consultant and the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The Bharat taxi service will adopt a cooperative pricing model aimed at affordability for customers while improving driver incomes. Membership drives are underway to strengthen the platform's footprint across the country. Last month, cooperation minister Amit Shah had confirmed that a cooperative taxi service would be operational by the end of 2025, while unveiling a comprehensive cooperative policy for the sector.
