Jaguars select Travis Hunter No. 2 overall, here's what they'll get
Travis Hunter captivated the college football world with his two-way abilities and now the Jaguars are ready to see what he can do in the NFL
Sports Pulse
Jacksonville's quest for an NFL team began nearly 46 years ago on an August night in 1979.
Over 50,000 people packed the Gator Bowl in an attempt to charm Robert Irsay to move his Baltimore Colts to the city in northern Florida. As the story goes, the Colts would eventually end up in Indianapolis, but Jacksonville left a lasting impression on the league.
The organization "Touchdown Jacksonville" produced a video as part of their bid to lure a franchise, calling it a "City of Dreams."
In 1993, the city was awarded a team that began play in 1995 – the Jacksonville Jaguars.
A naming contest ensued from the organization, which also considered names like the Stingrays and Sharks before settling on the Jaguars, which flowed nicely.
Fast forward all these years later and the Jaguars have cemented themselves in Jacksonville, hoping to kickstart a new era in 2025. Trevor Lawrence appears to be the quarterback for years to come, though it's a big year in his development.
Travis Hunter is now the marquee star, looking to play both sides of the ball and Liam Coen hopes to guide the team in the right direction as the new head coach.
Jacksonville coveted this team. Rumors have swirled for years about their future while the organization remains enamored with playing in London.
The good news is, success can put all that to rest. That's what the Jaguars are after in 2025. Here's a look at their regular season schedule.

Jaguars record prediction 2025
Record prediction: 8-9
Fresh off a 4-13 season, Coen has his work cut out for him in Jacksonville.
However, he'll be getting Lawrence back from injury and also have the luxury of some new weapons on offense to work with.
That alone should be result in plenty of improvement.
With the sixth-easiest schedule in 2025, per Sharp Football Analysis, can the Jaguars take advantage of a weak AFC South and get back to the playoffs?
Let's pump the brakes a little on that. Jacksonville can easily be a sneaky playoff contender in 2025, but Coen might have some growing pains in the big chair. He's bounced back-and-forth between college and the pros over the last few seasons.
He notably comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree and did a remarkable job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. However, Coen opted to build a staff that doesn't come with a lot of experience.
Offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile are both holding those key roles for the first time in the NFL.
A lot has to go right for a postseason appearance in Jacksonville. They appear to be on the right track and will win some more games thanks to an improved, healthy roster. The playoffs will have to wait for another year though.

Travis Hunter's acrobatic play in EA Sports Madden 26 trailer
Former Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter, who was one of three cover athletes in EA Sports College Football 25, will now make his first appearance in EA Sports' flagship game, Madden 26. The game will come out closer to the beginning of the NFL season, but EA Sports released a trailer for the game earlier this week. In the highlight-filled trailer, Hunter is seen grabbing a touchdown pass while diving over the goal line before celebrating with a twisting backflip. Not only did the trailer excite fans hoping to play as Hunter, but similar to EA Sports College Football 25, gamers will also be able to play with Hunter on defense and offense. One big question remains: what rating will Hunter receive upon the game's release? His Heisman trophy-winning season cemented his collegiate success in real life and virtually went from a dominant 97 to an elite 99 overall, making him the top player in the game. While it is unlikely that the Jaguars' rookie receives a 99 rating right off the bat, a low 80s rating seems to be the sweet spot for highly touted rookies. Hunter will have to battle Las Vegas Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty, Tennessee Titans Cam Ward and New York Giants Abdul Carter to be the highest-rated rookie. Colorado's former star is a strong candidate as the top-rated rookie after winning the Heisman and finishing the 2024 season with 36 total tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble on defense. On offense, Hunter was even more impressive, putting up 1,258 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns, leading the way to him becoming the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft. Jaguars' Travis Hunter is fitting in just fine in Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Jaguars' unicorn, Travis Hunter, seems to be on his way to seamlessly make the transition from collegiate amateur to NFL superstar. Hunter has yet to even take a snap, and yet his impact has already been felt both on the practice field and all over Duval County. Just this week, Hunter went viral yet again for an insane interception at the Jaguars' OTAs, but how is Hunter handling the transition to the NFL? Advertisement Action Sports Jax's Brent Martineau sat down with Hunter and discussed what it's been like for him since being drafted and what life is like inside the building. When asked that very question, Hunter replied, 'It's going great, it's a dream come true, and just happy to be out here with the guys, just being goofy and being myself.' 'I'm enjoying being a Jag, just being here, being able to play and being in the league, living my dream like I said before,' Hunter said. For some, the pressure might be too much. The day Hunter was drafted, he instantly became the franchise's most popular player ever. For many, that pressure can be overwhelming, but for Hunter, it almost seems natural. Advertisement He's just focused on football and being the very best player he can be for Head Coach Liam Coen and the rest of the coaching staff. Speaking of Coen, Hunter said he's picking things up quickly in Coen's playbook. 'The playbook is of course harder here, but I just go about it the same way, do what I have to do to be on the football field and playing fast,' Hunter said. Hunter went on to say that he's a perfect fit for Coen's offense. 'I fit perfectly. One of the guys, going to get the ball in the right spot and do my job,' Hunter said. Even so, Hunter doesn't want to set goals for himself just yet and knows he needs to be patient with himself. Success isn't instant gratification; it takes time and effort, and he knows that. Advertisement Martineau asked about Hunter's patience, to which he replied, 'Yeah, a little bit, gotta be patient. Coaches understand they are putting a lot on our plate right now, but as a player, you want to do everything right, you want to make sure you do everything right.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Luckily, it seems Hunter is fitting right in with his teammates inside the building and is already forming a bond with Jaguars' star receiver, Brian Thomas Jr. The two, combined, could form what is one of, if not the best, young receiver duos in the NFL. When asked what stands out about Thomas, Hunter said, 'His work ethic. He's going to do exactly what coach wants but he's also going to make a play every time the ball comes to him.' Advertisement [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Together with Thomas and Coen, the Jaguars have laid the groundwork for a much-improved, explosive offense this season. It's up to quarterback Trevor Lawrence and company to take advantage of the new offensive toys and get to work. When the games come, Hunter knows his team will be ready. 'You are going to see a group of guys that love the sport and group of guys that will work hard for each other, not just for themself for the rest of the guys on the team,' he said. There is almost no track record of success for 5th-round QBs before Shedeur Sanders
Mark Brunell had a good career. He made the Pro Bowl three times. He was the first big quarterback star for the Jacksonville Jaguars, helping them to an NFC championship game at the end of the 1996 season. Brunell made it 17 years in the NFL. He also has an unusual distinction. Brunell is the best quarterback to ever be picked in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. It's not really debatable either, which says more about the fifth-round quarterbacks in history than Brunell himself. Advertisement When we talk about Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his chances of overcoming a fall to the fifth round of the NFL Draft to become an NFL star, we also have to look at the history of quarterbacks from the fifth round. And it's not good. It's actually stunning how few decent quarterbacks have come from that round. Almost 60 years of bad history doesn't mean Sanders can't be a success in the NFL. But that history is telling. Mark Brunell the GOAT of 5th-round QBs In the Super Bowl era, which dates back to 1966, there have been two fifth-round quarterbacks to have more than 10,000 career passing yards, via Stathead. That's right; only two. Advertisement Brunell leads the list with 32,072. Steve Grogan, a longtime New England Patriots starter who was drafted in 1975, is second with 26,886. Grogan also never made a Pro Bowl and had more interceptions (208) than touchdowns (182). Grogan played in a different era and had some productive seasons as a starter, but it's hard to say he was a star out of the fifth round. Then there's a huge drop to third on the list. That's Gary Hogeboom, a 1980 draftee who started just 37 games with three teams, and had 9,436 career yards. No other fifth-round quarterback reached the relatively modest total of 7,000 career yards. Advertisement Among the group, only Brunell, Grogan and Hogeboom started 37 or more games in their careers. Hogeboom's starts came over a 10-year career. That means in the 59 NFL Drafts from 1966 to 2024, there have been two regular starting quarterbacks to come out of the fifth round. If you believe Sanders will get to 10,000 yards passing in his career, or even become a regular starter for the Browns or someone else, it's betting on him joining a very, very small list. Shedeur Sanders had a high-profile fall in the NFL Draft. (Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images) (Diamond Images via Getty Images) Shedeur Sanders tries to battle history There's a little bit of statistical flukiness with that wretched history of fifth-round quarterbacks. It would have looked a lot better if Tom Brady went in the fifth round instead of the sixth. Kurt Warner made the Hall of Fame after not being drafted at all, and Tony Romo had a good career as an undrafted free agent success story. Advertisement There are some good quarterbacks to come from the fifth round and beyond. There just aren't many to come specifically from the fifth round. There are only 21 fifth-round quarterbacks to reach 10,000 yards passing and here are some of the names: Steve Pelluer, Don Strock, A.J. Feeley, Sam Howell, Dan Orlovsky, Josh Johnson, T.J. Yates and Brett Hundley. It's not a good list to be on. No matter how many times you hear about Brady or even mid-round picks like Joe Montana, Dak Prescott or Russell Wilson beating the odds, most of the NFL's best quarterbacks have come out of the first round. By the time teams reach the fifth round, they're not expecting to hit on a quarterback of the future. Anyone who shows a glimmer of hope of being a viable NFL starter is usually gone long before the fifth round. The reason so few good quarterbacks have come out of the fifth round is because there aren't many good quarterback prospects left by the fifth round. And those quarterbacks taken in the fifth round don't get nearly as many chances to succeed as those drafted in the first or even second rounds. Sanders will try to be an outlier. He starts his career fourth on the Browns' depth chart. He is an unusual case, a gifted passer who fell in the draft perhaps in part because teams were turned off by his pre-draft interviews or the attention he would bring as a celebrity coming out of college. He's more talented than most fifth-round quarterbacks. But the history of those previous fifth-round quarterbacks is another reminder that Sanders has a lot to overcome to become an NFL star.
