BBC Antiques Roadshow guest stunned as mum's portrait worth five-figure sum

Antiques Roadshow expert Amin Jaffer valued one man''s painting of his mum and left him speechless
An Antiques Roadshow expert has pieced together the intriguing backstory of an artist, as they revealed the true value of a man's portrait of his mother. The popular BBC show was in Arley Hall in Cheshire for its latest instalment, where Amin Jaffer was on hand.

When taking a closer look at the woman's portrait, the expert remarked: "You might think you're looking at a portrait by a European artist of the 1930s. In actual fact, this painting was done by an Indian artist in the 1950s."

He then asked: "It's obviously a portrait. Can you tell me something about the sitter?" which led the owner to share: "Yes, the sitter is my mother. It was painted in India. The artist worked for Grindlays Bank which was where my father worked."

Jaffer revealed that the painting was the work of Indian artist Krishen Khanna, noting that the guest's mother had tried to keep in touch with him over the years after posing for the portrait, reports Devon Live.
Jaffer further added: "And the story of Grindlays Bank is fascinating because Krishen Khanna, his family originally came from Lahore.

"With the separation of India and Pakistan, they moved to Shimla where he worked in Grindlays Bank. Well the artist gives up banking in 1960 and becomes a professional painter.
"He takes the leap, although he had very little money and took that big step to become a professional artist and of course, most of the works we know of his date from that later period, from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, etc.
"It's extremely rare to find a picture from Krishen Khanna from 1954, from this experimental phase."

The expert shared that after attending several evening art classes, Khanna emerged as "a really important figure" often hailed as "one of the great modern painters of India".
He continued: "It's a fascinating picture, it's very, very much rooted in European painting of the 1930s. It has a very, very luminous effect with this very thick painting.
"Krishen Khanna has become a big name and what's happened is the whole market for modern Indian painting has gone through the roof.

"This is partly due to the emergence of private museums in India, and the Indian diaspora, including Indians in Britain and America, in South East Asia, who are keen to reconnect with their modern heritage and have begun collecting."
When quizzed on the projected value of the artwork, the guest candidly admitted: "None. None whatsoever. It's never been valued.

"I've mentioned to my mother that I might bring it here today and she said 'Go ahead. See what happens.' But no idea whatsoever."
Jaffer then continued with the official valuation, declaring: "Well I think she would be happy to know that were it to be offered at auction, it would probably be within the estimate of something like £30,000 to £50,000 today."
The audience, including the man's wife, let out gasps at the jaw-dropping valuation, whilst the owner himself maintained his composure. Following a brief silence, he uttered: "Crikey."
He then glanced towards his spouse, who enquired: "Are you shocked or am I?" Jaffer observed: "I think you're going to make her a very happy lady today", prompting the guest to reply: "Thank you very much indeed. She will be." The crowd burst into applause as he stared at the artwork in amazement.

Line of Duty star confirms the show is 'definitely coming back' 4 years after fi

Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar has confirmed the beloved crime drama is set to return to screens very soon. First airing in 2012, the British police procedural was created by Jed Mercurio and centred on Anti-Corruption Unit 12 (AC-12), a fictional team tasked with 'policing the police'. It starred Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar as DS Steve Arnott, DI Kate Fleming and Superintendent Ted Hastings. The show – which ran for six seasons before wrapping up in 2021 – set viewing records for the BBC, becoming the highest-rated drama in the UK since 2002. It came to an end in 2021 when Steve and the team finally uncovered the identity of elusive criminal ringleader 'H.' Although the show hasn't been on air for four years, it was never officially cancelled, with its creator and stars expressing interest in reviving the show several times in recent years. Now Adrian has again weighed in on the rumours it's set to return – giving an update that will surely make fans ecstatic. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, he was asked point blank if a seventh season was on the cards. 'Oh, it's definitely coming back,' he said. 'Some time next year. 'We're just waiting for the BBC to announce it.' Although the actor, 66, has announced the show's return several times in the past few years, only for nothing to eventuate, he is certain this time. 'I know Jed is writing. And Martin and Vicky are very keen,' he added. Earlier this year – in April – The Sun first reported Line of Duty was returning. 'This is the news Line of Duty fans have been waiting for since the sixth season left them deflated when it aired back in 2021,' a source told the publication. 'The BBC almost immediately requested more episodes to continue the story, but the success of the show meant Vicky, Martin and Adrian were instantly snapped up for other projects. 'But after several meetings with Jed and the production team, they've finally managed to clear space in their calendars next year to commit to making the show.' The publication claimed Jed had written most of the storyline for the new season, which it said would production later this year and could even air towards the end of 2026. Since the finale, talks of a subsequent season have repeatedly been raised. In 2023 Martin teased: 'We have a chat group called 'Line of Duty 6' and a while ago Jed changed the name of it to 'Line of Duty 7'.' He later said on his podcast, Restless Natives: 'We have had such a good run with it and a bit of you does go 'Let's walk away on a high', but we all want to work together again because we are so close.' More Trending Meanwhile Vicky said she'd 'love' to revive the show. At the time Line of Duty's season 6 finale aired, the BBC's chief content officer Charlotte Moore said that she was 'looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be'. Lisa Faulkner makes first public statement since John Torode's MasterChef firing

The TV presenter and chef, 60, was removed from the cooking competition alongside his co-host Gregg Wallace, also 60, earlier this month. Wallace stepped away from MasterChef in November last year while an in-depth investigation was conducted into the historical allegations regarding his behaviour on the show. It was found that 45 out of 83 allegations were upheld following the investigation. Wallace said he was 'deeply sorry' for his past actions but insisted that the most serious allegations were unproven. Shortly afterwards it emerged that co-host Torode's contract would also not be renewed after nine complaints were lodged against him. Among these was a claim that he 'used the N-word' on two separate occasions, which he said he has no memory of. Now, taking to Instagram, Torode's wife Lisa has made her first public statement. She said: 'Hi there, I just wanted to check in and say hello and I'm here. 'Just thank you for all your really lovely comments because they really mean a lot, so thank you.' Lisa, who now presents and does home cooking on her social media, met Torode in 2010 when she won Celebrity MasterChef. Despite both of them being married to other people at the time, their friendship blossomed into a relationship, with Torode reportedly winning her over with a love letter. After marrying in 201,9 the pair went on to work with each other on various cooking shows. He was seen on his 60th birthday on July 23 visiting an organic food store near his home in north London. The sighting came after Wallace told The Sun he has unfollowed both Torode and Lisa on social media. Speaking about Torode in his first interview since being sacked, Wallace said: 'We never really did get on that well. 'We're two very, very different characters. But we made bloody good telly together for 20 years.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from August 6. 'MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey.' The spokesperson revealed that it had 'not been an easy decision in the circumstances' and acknowledged that not everyone would agree with the final result. They added: 'In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. 'We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC.' Got a story?
