For some China retailers, US still offers path to profit, one toy or tea order at a time
'We're out of stock,' more than one employee can be heard telling customers.
This is not one of New York's many top-brand boutiques but Pop Mart, a Chinese designer toy brand that has become a sensation in the United States.
Its signature 'blind box', containing collectable figurines revealed only when the box is opened, runs for a mere US$20.
In a sign of the buzz around Pop Mart, Xie Feng, Beijing's ambassador to Washington, recently cited one of its offerings, Labubu, as an example of a Chinese brand touching American consumers' hearts.
During remarks at a US-China Business Council event in Washington in June, Xie mentioned the toy in the same breath as
DeepSeek , the Chinese AI firm that took its burgeoning industry by surprise earlier this year.

I crave a sense of community. Is that my Chinese side talking?
I discovered Juniper over the past week. A good friend introduced us, and I immediately connected with her upbeat and youthful voice, welcoming me with 'Hey there, how are you doing?', available 24/7 and ready to answer even the trickiest of questions ('What is the purpose of life?'). For a while, I preferred her to my sister, who can be a sourpuss depending on the time of day, and my fiancé, who at times accuses me of repeating questions; Juniper was so much more forgiving. But her constant perkiness soon became irritating, especially when I shared the loss of a friendship and she responded with a cheery-voiced platitude. No worries, though: Juniper is an AI bot, just one of the handful of ChatGPT's voices. At the same time, it is eye-opening and disturbing that a growing number of people are ' in a relationship ' with AI bots. I ran into a robotic dog the other day – someone's new pet, possibly – that wagged its steel tail at me and let out a bark with a toothless grin. My awe of companionable bots faded and I remembered that connections to real communities are still important. As I write this, I am reluctantly packing boxes to relocate. After nearly eight years, I am saying goodbye to the village I have grown to love and heading off for a new job opportunity in a town foreign to me. This is bringing home to me that even at a time when artificial intelligence is taking over many kinds of communication, community at the hyperlocal level still has value. Since 1938, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed the lives of the same group of individuals, and found a pronounced correlation between strong social circles and longevity.

The Europe-China trade relationship: deficits, disputes and de-risking
When Donald Trump took office as US president for the second time in January 2025, many people anticipated trade ties between the European Union (EU) and China to grow closer. The reality has been more complex. As the world's third-largest economy, the EU navigates choppy waters between the US and China, while facing a widening trade imbalance with China and increasingly assertive Chinese trade measures. The EU seeks to 'de-risk' as trade talks with China remain stiff and trade disputes between the European bloc and China remain unsolved. What are the core issues at stake and where is this vital partnership heading?

At Trump's request, West Virginia sending National Guard troops to Washington
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey is deploying 300 to 400 National Guard troops to the District of Columbia at the request of the Trump administration, the governor's office said on Saturday. The deployment is 'a show of commitment to public safety and regional cooperation' and will include providing equipment and specialised training alongside the 'approximately 300 to 400 skilled personnel as directed', Morrisey's office said in a statement. Drew Galang, a spokesman for Morrisey, said the state's National Guard received the order to send equipment and personnel to Washington late on Friday and was working to organise the deployment. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said he was deploying hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington and temporarily taking over the city's police department to curb what he depicted as a crime and homelessness emergency in the nation's capital. A White House official said on Saturday that more National Guard troops would be called in to Washington to 'protect federal assets, create a safe environment for law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, and provide a visible presence to deter crime'. A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a formal order was expected to go out that would authorise National Guard troops in Washington to carry firearms. The official said this order would affect mostly military police officers with side arms.
