No room for compromise on quality of development works: J&K Dy CM to officers
Chairing a comprehensive review meeting of the Public Works Department here, focusing on the progress on development projects in Jammu Division under NABARD PMGSY, CRIF, Bridges and C&T (Macadamisation) schemes, the Deputy Chief Minister directed the officers to expedite the progress on all works ensuring their timely completion, maintaining all prescribed quality standards.
The meeting was apprised of various projects which are at different stages of execution.
The concerned officials provided updates on status of projects while highlighting the challenges being faced during implementation of these vital works.
'Instructions have already been given to the executing agencies for strict adherence to the approved plans, ensuring there should be no compromise with the quality of works. Strict action would be initiated in case of any deviation and low quality works', maintained the Deputy Chief Minister.
While inspecting the ongoing works, the Deputy Chief Minister directed officials to conduct strict quality monitoring and ensure fast paced execution of the projects.
He further directed the engineers concerned to review progress on the projects regularly and blacklist those contractors who are not showing satisfactory performance.
While asking for undertaking developmental works in consonance with the local needs and aspirations, the Deputy Chief Minister said developmental plans should be formulated in consonance with the demands and convenience of people of the area.
Taking serious note of alleged substandard work on some of the projects, the Dy CM emphasised that there is no room for compromise with the quality of work.
Regarding delay in work execution caused due to forest clearance issues, the Dy CM directed the officers concerned to coordinate effectively and ensure timely approvals on this count.
He directed all the divisions to work in close coordination to resolve the issues hindering the pace of progress on these ambitious projects.
Secretary PWD (R&B) Bhupinder Kumar along with Chief Engineers, Superintendent Engineers, Executive Engineers and senior officials from concerned agencies were present during the meeting.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister visited Samba to inspect the damaged road on National Highway near Chichi Mata.
The Dy CM enquired about the shortcomings in the previous designs and asked the officers to fix accountability of the executing agency responsible for the damage.
He maintained that providing enhanced road connectivity, reliable bridges and other infrastructure for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic growth is the priority of the Omar Abdullah government. UNI VBH SSP

Omar Abdullah's statehood signature drive sparks Opposition heat in J&K
Srinagar, Aug 15 (UNI) J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's announcement of a door-to-door signature campaign across the Union Territory for the restoration of J&K's statehood has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Peoples Democratic Party MLA and legislature party leader in J&K Assembly Waheed Parra accused Omar of 'betraying' the people of Jammu and Kashmir by reducing the fight for statehood to 'token gestures' through a signature campaign. 'Omar Abdullah owes an apology not a signature campaign for normalising 5th August. With 50 MLAs behind him, he has reduced the fight for J&K's statehood to token gestures, after seeking votes door-to-door on the promise of restoring pre–5th August status. This is not just retreat, it is betrayal,' Parra said in a post on X. The PDP MLA claimed that the people gave Omar Abdullah a historic mandate to 'fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre.' 'If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' Parra said. The Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone asked Omar to stop "theatrics and pass an Assembly resolution on statehood." He warned against 'making a mockery' of the 'cause' and urged a dignified, constitutional route. He challenged Omar to 'once and for all' explain his reluctance to have a resolution for statehood passed in the Legislative Assembly — a constitutional body elected through the Election Commission of India. 'Our resolutions are not binding on the Supreme Court, but inherent in them will be constitutional dignity. It will be a constitutional message to the highest court in the country. Political or signature campaigns have no legal or constitutional sanctity. Name one event empirically in India or anywhere in the world where signature campaigns have altered legal interpretations. They are not even admissible,' he asserted. Recalling that 'a signature campaign for independence was carried out by Yasin Malik also — how far did that campaign go,' Lone accused Omar of showing 'disregard, disdain and contempt' for the very Assembly that gave him the CM's position. 'You derive your power, perks and Chief Ministerial position from the Assembly. Why this contempt for the very institution that has made you the CM?' he asked. 'I beg you — please stop this childish and immature attitude. We will support any campaign unconditionally. But please ensure that a resolution from the UT Assembly is also passed and sent to the Supreme Court. We are facing a battle of a lifetime. A door-to-door signature campaign is nothing but theatrics. Tell me, is the Supreme Court answerable to majoritarian assertions or to law? Majoritarianism is something politicians practise. Supreme Court practises law,' Lone cautioned. National Conference president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said the signature campaign for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood will be run vigorously. BJP undermining foundation of democracy to stay in power, alleges Kharge
New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today raised serious concerns over alleged large-scale electoral irregularities, accusing the ruling party of undermining the foundations of Indian democracy to stay in power. In a video message on the occasion of 79th Independence Day, Kharge cited the historic words of Dr BR Ambedkar, who, on June 15, 1949, said, 'Franchise is a most fundamental thing in a democracy. No person who is entitled to be brought into the electoral be excluded merely as a result of prejudice...' Kharge alleged that under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, votes of opposition supporters are being deleted en masse. 'People who are alive are being declared dead,' he said, accusing the Election Commission of "bias" for refusing to disclose whose names were being removed and on what grounds. Welcoming the Supreme Court's intervention, which directed the Election Commission to make the voter lists public, Kharge questioned the ruling party's silence over the deletion of 65 lakh voters. 'This clearly indicates who benefited from this exercise,' he said. He also referred to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's data-backed claims showing how voter manipulation had altered election outcomes — including seats where the Congress had a lead in all Assembly segments but still lost due to a BJP lead in just one. 'This is not just our battle — this is the biggest challenge facing the world's largest democracy,' he asserted. Kharge called upon all Congress leaders and workers to thoroughly examine voter rolls in their respective booths. He urged them to identify names wrongly deleted, voters wrongly declared dead, names shifted to other booths, outsiders added, or voter IDs linked to multiple places. He also claimed of a "new issue coming to light" — 'additional voter lists' being issued just a day before polling, making it nearly impossible for candidates to review them in time. Calling it a "conspiracy" by the ruling party, Kharge said, "The Congress party has created a website where you can provide information about all such irregularities". "This is not just a fight to win an election,' Kharge emphasised. 'This is a fight to save Indian democracy and protect our Constitution.' He invoked India's great leaders — Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr B R Ambedkar, Maulana Azad, and Subhas Chandra Bose - saying their dreams cannot be shattered. "We must fight this battle with the same intensity with which we fought the battle for independence," he said. Jairam slams PM Modi's I-Day address as 'stale, hypocritical and troubling'
New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) Congress today slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, calling the speech 'stale, hypocritical, insipid, and troubling.' In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of repeating 'recycled slogans' without delivering measurable outcomes. 'The PM was tired today. Soon he will be retired,' Ramesh said. He criticised the repetition of slogans such as "Viksit Bharat, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas", claiming they have become hollow over time. 'The 'Made-in-India' semiconductor chip promise has now been made innumerable times — each time with fanfare, each time without delivery,' he said. "It has in fact been made with a huge lie – which is Mr Modi's trademark – given that India's first Semiconductor Complex was set up in Chandigarh in the early 1980s," he said. On agriculture, Ramesh accused the PM of offering 'lip-service' to farmers while failing to deliver on critical issues like legal guarantees for Minimum Support Prices (MSP), fair price setting, or farm loan waivers. 'The rhetoric on protecting farmers has become hollow and unbelievable given his history of attempting to bulldoze the three Black farm laws and in the absence of a legal guarantee for MSP, the setting of MSP at 50% over the comprehensive cost of cultivation, or a farm loan waiver,' he said. The Congress leader also slammed the PM on job creation. "Today's address was a bland mix of self-congratulation and selective storytelling — devoid of any honest acknowledgement of the deep economic distress, the unemployment crisis, and the glaring and growing economic inequality in our society. He also targeted the PM's comments on democracy and inclusion, calling them ironic. "The PM waxed eloquent on unity, inclusion, and democracy at a time when he has presided over and engineered the collapse of our most foundational constitutional institutions like the Election Commission,' he added. The Rajya Sabha member said, "He has yet to answer any of the most foundational questions raised by the Leader of Opposition over the credibility of the election mechanism and is going full throttle with a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, which has disenfranchised lakhs of voters." Ramesh also attacked the Prime Minister's reference to RSS. "The most troubling element of the PM's speech today was his name-checking of the RSS from the ramparts of the Red Fort — a blatant breach of the spirit of a constitutional, secular republic." He further added, "It is nothing but a desperate attempt to appease the organisation in the run-up to his 75th birthday next month. Decisively weakened after the events of June 4th, 2024, he is now at their complete mercy and reliant on Mohan Bhagwat's good offices for the extension of his tenure post-September.
