State to help Himachal Pradesh adopt Kerala model of palliative care
A team from Himachal Pradesh, including the Health Minister, Health Secretary and NHM Mission Director, had visited Kerala earlier to study the State's palliative care model. They had visited Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts to study the delivery of palliative care services closely and had expressed their appreciation for the State's universal palliative care delivery for all bed-ridden patients.
With Himachal Pradesh deciding to adopt the community-based palliative care model of Kerala, it had been decided to give training in palliative care delivery to 70 doctors and as many nurses
The first team consisting of 15 nurses and 15 doctors from Himachal Pradesh were given 10-days' training in palliative care delivery. The course certificates were distributed by Health Minister Veena George at the conclusion of the training programme here on Wednesday
Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Rajan Khobragade, State Nodal Officer for Palliative Care Mathew Numpeli, among others, were present.

Over 97k sickle cell cases found in state in 2 years
Bhubaneswar: As many as 97,501 sickle cell disease (SCD) cases have been identified in the state in the last two years after 46.65 lakh people were screened. This was revealed at a review meeting chaired by health secretary Aswathy S here on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now So far, 46.65 lakh screenings have been conducted against the cumulative target of around 1.08 crore up to the year 2025-26 from the launch of the programme in July 2023. "Sickle cell traits have been found in 4,11,395 cases. The identified cases are being provided with the required treatment through govt hospitals in their respective areas," said a statement from the health and family welfare department. At the meeting, the health secretary asked her department officials to intensify the drive against SCD and thalassemia in high-risk zones. Brundha D, mission director, National Health Mission (NHM), Odisha, said 21 districts have been covered under the sickle cell programme of the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission. In these districts, SCD screening facilities are provided on different platforms. "At the school and anganwadi centre level, screening for children aged 0 to 18 years is conducted by the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) team at the community level. The screening of pregnant women is done in the course of antenatal care on village health and nutrition day. In tribal areas, the screening is done through mobile health units," she added. In urban areas, screening facilities are available at the level of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. Besides, screening facilities have also been made available at the health centre level in other less risky nine districts, said the senior officer. Free blood is provided to them. They are also exempted from paying the service charges for blood packs. Free medicines are provided to them at govt hospitals. Besides, financial assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh is provided to children less than 12 years of age for bone marrow transplantation, she added.

IT parks becoming women friendly workplaces, says Veena George
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's IT parks are evolving into women-friendly workplaces, said health minister Veena George. She was speaking at a training programme for chairpersons and members of internal committees (ICs) formed in various offices within Technopark on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As part of a mission-driven initiative by department of women and child development in collaboration with the IT department, systematic efforts have been launched to create safer workspaces for women, she said. She noted that internal committees were being established in all companies and emphasised that this process was already under way in public sector organisations and IT parks. Training sessions have also been conducted for the film industry to support the formation of similar committees. The minister highlighted that a dedicated portal was launched in 2023 by women and child development department to monitor the functioning of these committees. By March 8, 2025, internal committees were set up in every govt department, she added. "A large number of women are working in the IT sector and more women must come forward in the workforce," the minister said. She stressed that the govt was identifying and addressing the challenges faced by women across various fields. She also appreciated the IT sector for its support of the health department's cancer prevention mass campaign Arogyam Aanandam Akattam Arbudham, which promotes public participation in cancer awareness and prevention. "Ensuring that internal committees' function effectively was the responsibility of both institutions and employers," she said. The training was organised as part of the state's initiative to implement the 2013 Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act in workplaces with 10 or more employees. Women and child development director Haritha V Kumar presided over the programme. Nirbhaya cell state coordinator Sreela Menon led the training sessions, and additional director Bindu Gopinath delivered the welcome address.
