Mira Nair didn't want to cast Kal Penn in The Namesake, after son showed her Harold and Kumar: ‘Beta, this is clearly not the guy for us'

Actor Kal Penn was the latest guest at Express Adda, a platform for candid conversations hosted by The Indian Express Group. During the conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, The Indian Express Group, Kal shared how his breakout role as Kumar in Harold & Kumar almost sabotaged his chances to be cast in Mira Nair's The Namesake.
The actor shared how he was battling with stereotypical roles during his early days, and talked about the film Van Wilder, in which he played the role of Taj Mahal. Kal admitted that the Van Wilder gig actually helped him land Harold & Kumar, but the film in turn almost lost him the role of Gogol in The Namesake. He shared, 'The Namesake has been my favourite project, and Mira was a role model of mine when I was a kid. She was one of the catalyst of why I became an actor. The way I got that role, was that I wrote her a letter and I said, 'The Namesake is an incredible book, and you have to let me audition for it.' It just so happened that her 14-year-old son (Zohran Mamdani) was a fan of Harold & Kumar. He told her to cast me and actually showed her clips from the movie. She instantly said, 'Beta this is clearly not the guy for us,' but then she got my letter and said, 'What the heck, because of my son have to let him audition.''

Kal Penn also shared his experience of working with Irfan Khan in The Namesake and said, 'He was incredible. He had this power of communicating through silence. There is this one scene, when he comes into my room in college to give a book, and he just uses silence to show what his character is feeling. He does something similar when where are in a car and he tells Gogol the origin of his name, and in both those scenes, there is so little dialogue, but he such a beautiful and generous performer. We all miss him.'
Kal admitted that while some of the roles he played, or was offered, were frustrating at the time, in hindsight, they paved the way for the work he truly wanted to do.

Bigg Boss 19 trailer: Salman Khan introduces new theme ‘Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar', promises drama with democratic twist

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan returns with a brand-new season of one of Indian television's most popular reality shows — Bigg Boss. The trailer for Season 19 teases a fresh twist with the theme of 'democracy'. In the video, Salman offers a glimpse into what's new this time around. Salman Khan reveals the theme of Bigg Boss 19 in the trailer video. Salman Khan introduces the new theme of Bigg Boss 19 On Thursday, JioHotstar shared the trailer of Bigg Boss Season 19, which showed Salman Khan dressed as a politician. Set against the dramatic backdrop of a Parliament-inspired Bigg Boss house, the new theme, 'Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar', introduces a seismic shift in power. In the video, Salman revealed that the housemates will have the authority to make decisions big and small, turning the house into a battleground of public sentiment. He is heard saying in the video in Hindi, "Aisa pehli baar hua 18-19 saalon mein (This has happened for the first time in 18–19 years). This time, Bigg Boss won't be about crazy drama, but about democracy. Every small and big decision will be in the hands of the housemates. So housemates, do whatever you want to do, man — but be ready for the consequences and the public, because this time in Bigg Boss, it's the Gharwaalon ki Sarkaar (housemates' government)." Salman Khan on Bigg Boss season 19 As Salman returns as the host, he shared his excitement about the show and said in a statement, "Bigg Boss' every season is different, but this time, the tables have turned. 'Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar' ka matlab hai power unke haath mein aur jab power milti hai, toh asli chehre saamne aate hain. Is baar contestants ko apne decisions lene ka poora haq diya gaya hai, par har decision ke saath ek consequence bhi aata hai. Main hamesha kehta hoon, tameez se khelo, par yeh log tameez chhod ke drama le aate hain (Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar means the power is in their hands, and when people get power, their true faces are revealed. This time, the contestants have been given full authority to make their own decisions, but every decision comes with a consequence. I always say, play with dignity, but these people leave dignity behind and bring in drama). This season, they'll try to run the house their way, but when things go out of control, you know who's coming back to set the record straight!' About Bigg Boss 19 The makers of the show have not yet revealed the contestants' list. However, Priyanka Jagga, who was earlier a contestant in Bigg Boss 10 and was ousted from the show after a heated argument with Salman, has claimed that she is coming back this season. The show will start streaming from August 24 on JioHotstar at 9 pm and on Colors at 10:30 pm.

SBM 'Banks' on rap ad to protect you from cybercrime

With a fusion of India's rich cultural heritage and modern digital communication, SBM Bank India has unveiled "MudraRap," an innovative campaign designed to raise awareness about cybersecurity. The initiative combines the expressive hand gestures of classical Indian dance , known as mudras, with the high-energy rhythm of rap music to connect with the nation's digitally savvy population. The campaign comes at a time when cyber threats grow increasingly sophisticated, with financial frauds and social engineering scams on the rise. SBM Bank India's approach reimagines cybersecurity awareness , moving it from a dry, technical subject to a vibrant, cultural experience, said a media statement. The core of the "MudraRap" campaign is a video in which expressive hand gestures derived from classical dance and everyday movements are paired with a fast-paced rap composition. An AI-generated voiceover and background score deliver key cyber safety messages, such as safeguarding passwords, recognising scam attempts, and protecting personal information online. The rap's contemporary lyrics are crafted to resonate specifically with millennial and Gen Z audiences. This campaign is a natural extension of SBM Bank India's long-standing commitment to integrating art into its brand philosophy. "India has always told its stories through art," said Sunita Prabhu, Head of Marketing & Communication at SBM Bank India. "With MudraRap, we wanted to tap into this cultural power to deliver an urgent and timely message—that of CyberSuraksha . We've taken a form rooted in our heritage and layered it with words and music that speak to the current generation." The powerful hand gestures, or "Mudra-graphy," featured in the campaign were conceptualized and performed by Tithi Das, a renowned Odissi dancer from Kolkata. Das's choreography seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, transforming classical dance into a compelling visual language for a modern message. The campaign's urgency is underscored by alarming statistics on cybercrime. Niju Mohan, Chief Information Security Officer & Head of Operational Risk at SBM Bank India, highlighted the scale of the problem. "Cyber-enabled financial frauds are rising sharply, with social engineering driving nearly one-third of the cases," Mohan stated. "Digital Arrest scams alone caused losses exceeding ₹2,000 crore last year. As people remain the weakest link in the cybersecurity chain, human behavior must be treated as the first line of defense. Continuous awareness campaigns are essential to build resilience across audiences, and MudraRap aims to raise awareness in this critical space." Watch the film here:
