Guardians' writer discusses wild scenario: Could Cleveland face Shane Bieber in October?
October baseball is all about drama. So, with the playoffs fewer than two months away, why not start fantasizing about the possibilities?
Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com is doing just that, as he details a potential postseason matchup between the Guardians and their former ace, Shane Bieber, in his latest piece. Of course, a lot would still need to happen.
'First, Bieber would have to prove he's recovered from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow to join the Blue Jays' starting rotation,' Hoynes wrote. 'He has not pitched in a big league game since April of 2024.'
Then, the Blue Jays and Guardians would have to make the postseason. Toronto has a 4.5-game lead in the AL East with a 69-50 record, but Cleveland's playoff chances aren't nearly as great.
The Guardians sit 6.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central and are 1.0 game out of the Wild Card. FanGraphs gives them a 26.9% chance to make the postseason, while the Blue Jays are basically a lock at 98.0%.
Bieber was traded to Toronto on July 31 for prospect Khal Stephen—a right hander that currently holds a 2.06 ERA in the minors this season and just made his Double-A debut.
Cleveland's former ace is a two-time All-Star and the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner. He has a career 3.22 ERA over 136 games (134 starts) and has been working his way through the minor leagues this season with the hope of making it to the Majors later this year.
Bieber holds a 2.45 ERA across four different levels in the minors, and he most recently moved up to Triple-A Buffalo, where he's started two games. If Bieber returns, and Cleveland surges into the playoffs, this matchup would be must-see TV with the season on the line.

Toronto Blue Jays at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and predictions
The Toronto Blue Jays (73-52) and Pittsburgh Pirates (52-73) begin a 3-game series Monday. First pitch from PNC Park in Pittsburgh is set for 6:40 p.m ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Blue Jays vs. Pirates odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: First meeting; Blue Jays won 2 of 3 last season The Blue Jays' 3-game winning streak was snapped Sunday in a 10-4 loss to the Texas Rangers as -113 home favorites, as the Over (7.5) hit. SP José Berríos was hit hard (4 1/3 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K), and Toronto's offense came only via home runs by C Alejandro Kirk, 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a 2-run shot by DH George Springer. The Pirates' struggles continued Sunday with a 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs, marking their seventh defeat in the last 8 games. Pittsburgh lost as +164 road underdogs, pushing on the 7-run total. RF Bryan Reynolds and 3B Nick Gonzales both collected multiple hits, while C Joey Bart had a 2-run double in the sixth inning. Blue Jays at Pirates projected starters RHP Kevin Gausman vs. RHP Paul Skenes Gausman (8-9, 3.79 ERA) is making his 25th start. He has a 1.05 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 8.7 K/9 through 142 2/3 innings. Skenes (7-9, 2.13 ERA) is making his 26th start. He has a 0.96 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 10.1 K/9 through 148 innings. Blue Jays at Pirates odds Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:01 a.m. ET. Blue Jays at Pirates picks and predictions Pirates 3, Blue Jays 2 Moneyline BET PIRATES (-120). The Pirates should feel confident with Skenes back on the mound Monday at PNC Park. The young stud has been nothing short of dominant in his last 3 home starts, going 3-0 with 0 ER allowed, just 13 hits surrendered, and 23 strikeouts over 18 innings. His presence gives Pittsburgh exactly what they need to snap out of their recent struggles. The Pirates have been a far better team at home this season, sitting 5 games above .500 at PNC Park compared to 26 games under on the road. Their pitching has been especially strong at home, with a 3.53 team ERA—seventh best in MLB—thanks in large part to Skenes' dominance. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are just 5-5 in their last 10 road games, making them a vulnerable opponent. Given Skenes' form and Pittsburgh's overall home strength, the Pirates are in an excellent spot to grab a much-needed win on Monday night. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I don't like the odds on the run line and will keep my wager to the moneyline. Over/Under BET UNDER 7 (-115). Skenes' dominance at home has been well-documented, but Gausman has been just as effective on the road lately. Over his last 3 road starts, he's gone 1-1 while allowing just 4 ER across 18 innings. With both starters in strong form, runs will be tough to come by Monday. The Pirates are 2-0-1 to the Under in their last 3 games, and the Under has also cashed in 6 of the last 10 meetings between these clubs. With elite pitching on display, this matchup shapes up as a low-scoring affair where the Under looks like the smart play. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Guardians' Wild Card Hopes Rest With Jose Ramirez's Bat and Base Stealing
Slugger Jose Ramirez is invaluable to the Cleveland Guardians—there's no question about it. And this time, their 2025 schedule is do-or-die for the Guardians. An even bigger statement concerning Cleveland's relevance in the American League Central is, 'Where would the club be without Ramirez?' There's no doubt that the Guardians' senior member of continuous seasons with the club is the single biggest contributor for them remaining in the Wild Card race.

Guardians' Emmanuel Clase put on paid leave amid MLB's sports-betting investigation
In a shocking turn of events, right-handed closer Emanuel Clase has been placed on Major League Baseball's non-disciplinary paid leave. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Clase has been placed on the list due to Major League Baseball's sports betting investigation. He's now the second Guardians player to deal with such a matter, as pitcher Luis Ortiz has been investigated over the past few weeks. "BREAKING: Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of MLB's sports-betting investigation, sources tell ESPN. "Clase is the second Guardians pitcher on leave tied to the investigation, joining right-hander Luis Ortiz," he wrote. It remains uncertain what Clase did, or what Major League Baseball found, but this is obviously not good. MORE: MLB insider reveals Guardians' trade demands for Steven Kwan Clase, a potential trade candidate for the Guardians, might be out for a couple of games now, something the team has to deal with as they're searching to win the division, given how poorly the Detroit Tigers have played over the past few weeks. The Guardians, currently 6-4 over their last 10, are 52-53 on the season, and only eight games behind the first-place Tigers now. Despite the rumors about Clase potentially being traded, they've been quieted down by most of the front office and insiders. During the 2025 campaign, the 27-year-old hasn't thrown the baseball at the same level as in recent seasons, posting a 3.23 ERA. However, outside of a few bad outings, Clase has continued to be very good. It hasn't been a great July for the All-Star, pushing a 3.09 ERA. Now, he'll be out for an undisclosed amount of time.
