Ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates, they made a roster move involving multiple Minor League pitchers.

The Phillies announced on Twitter/X that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, and designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler for assignment. Cusick was then optioned to the Florida Complex League.
Cusick, the player the Phillies picked-up off waivers from the White Sox, has yet to make his Major League debut. The 25-year-old has spent the last five years in the Minor Leagues, bouncing between the Detroit Tigers, Athletics, and White Sox before making his way to the Phillies.
On June 5th, the White Sox designated Cusick for assignemnt after picking him up just a day prior. He was designated for assignment by the Tigers on June second, before being DFA'd for the second time in the span of three days.

In 2025, between two Minor League teams, Cusick has a 6.32 ERA in 15.2 innings of work. He's also allowed a WHIP of 1.85, and struck out 11 batters. Across his Minor League career, Cusick has an ERA of 5.20, and a win-loss record of 10-19.

The pitcher the Phillies designated for assignment to make room for Cusick is 28-years-old, with some Major League experience. Tyler pitcher for the Miami Marlins in 2024, where in 31.2 innings of work, he had a 5.40 ERA and 25 strikeouts.
Tyler was pitching with the Phillies Triple-A affiliate, Lehigh Valley. There, he had a 5-3 record with a 4.31 ERA in 12 starts. Across his 12 starts, Tyler threw 62.2 innings, walking 21 and striking out 43.

This move from the Phillies is to bring in a younger pitcher who has yet to make his MLB debut. Cusick, while unlikely to play a major role for the Phillies, is a player worth taking a chance on.
With the Phillies question marks in the bullpen, and some recent uncertainty in the rotation, the Phillies are in the market for new pitching talent.
While Cusick was just DFA'd by two teams in a week, the Phillies bring in the former 2021 first-round pick to see if they can get anything out of a former top recruit out of high school.

MLB Insider Says Phillies Should ‘Worry' at MLB Trade Deadline

MLB Insider Says Phillies Should 'Worry' at MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are 10 games above .500, but one MLB insider thinks the team has several holes to fill as the MLB Trade Deadline draws closer. According to ESPN's Bradford Doolittle, the Phillies are in dire need of improvements at several key spots. Advertisement Doolittle says fans and the team alike should "worry" about what they need at the deadline, especially with an injury to Bryce Harper and an "average" offense that he says is being carried by Harper, Trea Turner and Schwarber. Oh, and offensive firepower is not even his biggest concern. "The position group once again rates as one of baseball's poorest defenses," Doolittle said. The starting rotation remains the most solid component to this Phillies team, which can only carry a team so far with lackluster production outside of the starting pitchers. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) looks on during an injury delay in the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Hamilton-Imagn Images Unfortunately for Phillies fans, defensive woes and an average offense are not Doolittle's only concerns. Still, the insider noted an ideal scenario for Philadelphia to attack the deadline. Advertisement "If the offense can produce consistently -- and soon, given the competitive environment in the NL -- Dave Dombrowski can focus his trade resources on upgrading the Phillies' leaky bullpen," Doolittle wrote. But at 10 games above .500, If Dombrowski can somehow address the bullpen and what some consider one of the worst defenses in the MLB, this team still has plenty of playoff potential. That potential will depend on if Harper can return from his wrist injury sooner rather than later. According to Paul Casella at it is the same injury he battled for much of last season. Harper has now been on the 10-day injured list since Saturday, June 7. That means he can return to play as early as next week Tuesday, June 17. Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade

The post Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets and San Diego Padres are teams vying to make a World Series appearance this season. Both teams lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 MLB Postseason and are trying to improve their lineup to make another run this time around. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is a player to keep an eye on ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. There is quite literally no point in the White Sox keeping him on the roster, and a change of scenery is best for both sides. The Mets and Padres are two teams who could make a move for the outfielder, and according to ESPN, are urged to do so. Robert Jr. is not having a good season with the White Sox, but he has the potential to be a very good player. Injuries have taken over his career, and he has yet to really play a full season in the majors. In 2023, he played 145 games, which is the most in his career by a ton. The only other time he played at least 100 games was last season in their historically terrible campaign. This year, Robert Jr. is batting just .177 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. His Slugging Percentage is just .281, and he has a WAR of -0.1. He desperately needs a change of scenery. The Cuba native could be a great fit for the Padres. Bradford Doolittle of ESPN broke it down: 'The Padres have rolled out a motley collection of non-producers in left field, which has yielded them an overall slash line of .200/.248/.286 with four homers at the position. Upgrade opportunity! Luis Robert Jr. might work if the Padres are convinced he has nowhere to go but up, as his .546 OPS is barely above that of the Padres' left fielders. However, A.J. Preller handles it, San Diego can't leave this hole unfilled.' As for the Mets, they need a center fielder. Doolittle thinks Robert Jr. could be a good fit for them, and he would play on the East Coast closer to home. 'Center is an obvious position of need for New York, which seems like a great landing spot for Luis Robert Jr.' It's unclear if the White Sox are motivated to want to move him right now, so closer to the deadline makes more sense. For now, the Padres aim to even the series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, and the Mets begin a series against the Washington Nationals. Michael Massey lands on the Injured List

The Royals announced Michael Massey has been placed on the Injured List with a left ankle sprain and they have promoted Tyler Tolbert to replace him. Massey started Saturday at DH, against the White Sox, exiting mid-game, and he did not play on Sunday. He has struggled mightily this year, hitting .202/.221/.258 with just two home runs, and his 25 wRC+ is the worst among all qualified hitters in baseball. Massey has struggled all year with no signs of improvement. He's hitting just .176 in his last 20 games and he has the lowest walk rate in baseball. He still has options remaining and seemed poised for a demotion until his injury. Cam Devanney is an infielder at Triple-A Omaha, hitting .289/.383/.572 with 12 home runs, but is not currently on the 40-man roster and would require opening up a roster spot to add him. Tolbert has spent 13 games with the Royals this year, mostly as a pinch runner, stealing six bases, but only getting five plate appearances. He was hitting .265/.339/.408 with three home runs and 11 steals in 29 games at Omaha.
