O'Gorman students make lasagna for families in need
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Whipping up a pan of lasagna is pretty simple if you ask O'Gorman high schooler Alexander Schieffer.
'All you have to do is make your tomato marinara sauce, have some lasagna noodles ready, have some cheese, have some spinach, and just layer it as the recipe calls for,' Alexander Schieffer said.
His sister, Annabella, also knows a thing or two about the Italian dish.
'Oh yeah. Love lasagna, favorite meal,' Annabella Schieffer said.
The Schieffers and several other O'Gorman students made pans of lasagna at school Wednesday.
While the recipe calls for your typical ingredients, Annabella says there's something special in the pans of lasagna.
'It's made with lots of love and kindness,' Annabella Schieffer said.
Density, resident rights, of interest to councilors
The meals will be delivered to families in need in the Sioux Falls area through Lasagna Love.
'They're learning to be charitable. That makes them really excited to prepare these lasagnas because they're going to needy families,' Culinary Arts Teacher Jane Bradfield said.
It's a dish that can feed the body and soul.
'I feel like it's our responsibility to give back to the community,' Alexander Schieffer said.
The Schieffers' stepmom is the regional director for Lasagna Love.

Operation Gratitude to assemble care packages for SC veterans and first responders
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A nationwide nonprofit organization is working with the Charleston community to assemble thousands of care packages for veterans and first responders across the state. Operation Gratitude works to lift spirits and say 'thank you' to military and first responder communities and their service by creating opportunities for all Americans to express their gratitude through volunteering. The group will host an inaugural 'Community Cares' event at Johnson Hagood Stadium, where 5,000 care packages will be assembled and later delivered to veterans and first responders to provide them with comfort, encouragement, and offer a tangible connection between local communities and those who serve. 'This is what our mission is all about. Empowering Americans to take action and show their gratitude,' said Meg Barron, Executive Director of Operation Gratitude. 'We heard loud and clear from our supporters that they wanted opportunities to participate in local assembly events like those we host in Los Angeles and San Antonio. Through Community Cares, we're making that vision a reality, one community at a time. We are honored to join with the Charleston community to say thank you to South Carolina's Veterans and First Responders.' Charleston volunteers will also have an opportunity to write letters of appreciation to accompany each care package. The assembly is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium (68 Hagood Ave.) Click here to learn more. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Group to place 1,000 American flags in Daniel Island field
DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The Daniel Island Exchange Club will pay special tribute to those who served through its 10th annual 'Field of Honor' event this weekend. The club and volunteers on Saturday will transform a lawn into a sea of red, white, and blue as they place 1,000 American flags along River Landing Drive. Organizers say the flags are sponsored to pay tribute to heroes who have earned our gratitude. The flags will remain on display through July 6. 'Those who have experienced a Field of Honor display know to expect a touching scene of flags flying to celebrate our heroes. Those who are first time visitors will find that the display must be experienced to be fully appreciated,' said event organizers. It is free to visit the Field of Honor display, and people are encouraged to bring their family and friends to pay tribute. You can dedicate a flag or learn more about the event by clicking here. First millennial saint Carlo Acutis will be canonized Sept. 7, the pope says
ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Friday set Sept. 7 as the rescheduled date to canonize the Catholic Church's first millennial-era saint Carlo Acutis. Leo made the announcement during a meeting of cardinals, known as a consistory, to set the dates for a handful of new saints. Acutis' canonization was originally scheduled for April 27, but was postponed following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. Acutis was 15 when he died in northern Italy in 2006, after a short bout with leukemia. He has become enormously popular especially among young Catholics who have been flocking to his tomb in Assisi. While he enjoyed regular pastimes for his age — hiking, video games, and joking around with friends – he also taught catechism in a local parish and did outreach to the homeless. He used his computer skills to create an online exhibit about more than 100 eucharistic miracles recognized by the church over many centuries. His tomb in Assisi has become a pilgrimage site especially during the 2025 Holy Year underway. It features a glass coffin in which Acutis can be seen dressed in sneakers, jeans and a sweatshirt, In setting the Sept. 7 date, Leo announced that Acutis would be canonized along with another Italian Catholic, Pier Giorgio Frassati, who also died young at age 24 after contracting polio. ___ Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP's collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.
