KUALA LUMPUR: A seven-year-old girl died after falling from the 29th floor to the fifth floor of a condominium in Subang Jaya yesterday.
Subang Jaya deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Fairus Jaafar said a team was deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call via the MERS 999 helpline at about noon.
"Upon arrival, the victim was found lying face down on the fifth floor of the building.
"A medical officer at the scene confirmed that the victim had died," he said in a statement today.
Fairus said preliminary investigations indicated no foul play in the tragic incident.
He said the victim's mother was at home caring for another child who was under quarantine, while the father was at work.
Investigations showed that the victim had climbed out of a window that was not fitted with a safety grille.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or exposure of a child to danger, which carries a penalty of up to RM50,000, 20 years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
He added that investigation papers will be completed and submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
