The Ordinary revamps £15 SPF with lightweight serum with ‘zero white cast'

Daily Mirror02-06-2025
If you're looking for a great facial sunscreen at a reasonable price, you might want to check out this 'non-greasy' new SPF 45 formulation from high street favourites The Ordinary
Most beauty lovers should know that wearing SPF on your face every day is a must for protecting your skin against not only sun damage but also signs of premature ageing, but it can be tricky to find one that ticks all the boxes: offers a high level of protection, doesn't feel greasy, isn't visible on the skin, and isn't so expensive that you can't afford to use it every day. Luckily, we think we've found just the one.
Proving that beauty brands don't always get it right the first time, high street heroes The Ordinary scrapped its existing facial sunscreen following customer feedback about thick texture and white colour and went back to the drawing board – and this new product, UV Filters SPF 45 Serum, priced at £15.80 from The Ordinary's website and Boots, is the result. Gloriously fluid and quickly absorbed, it gives glow without any greasy sensation and doesn't clog pores, making it ideal for complexions that mean more towards combination or oily.
Despite only just hitting shelves, this SPF has already amassed dozens of five star reviews from people who has already tried, both those that were gifted it by The Ordinary in return for their honest review, and those who bought it themselves.
"I love this sunscreen!" one review reads. "It's not messy, it blends in so easily and effortlessly. It leaves the skin moisturised and not greasy. It went easily with my moisturiser so no pilling. It's truly that good!"
"I love The Ordinary products and this is sunscreen serum is lightweight, non-greasy and perfect under make-up!" another fan wrote. "Leaves my skin glowing while providing strong SPF 45 protection. A new must-have in my skincare routine!"
A third review reads: "This was my first time trying a serum-style sunscreen, and I was honestly surprised by how well it worked. The texture is super lightweight and easy to apply, and it didn't feel greasy at all. It absorbed quickly and sat well under make-up. On my tan skin, there was a very slight cast at first, but it mostly blended out after a few minutes. The scent is there, but not overpowering. Overall, a solid daily SPF that feels more like skincare than sunscreen."
Some, however, remarked how they wished The Ordinary had made a mineral sunscreen instead. Mineral formulas can be better for those with sensitive skin or easily irritated eyes, but can leave be thicker and more visible on the skin, especially on dark tones. If you're looking for a great recommendation for a mineral facial SPF, our head of shopping Zoe loves Lancaster Sun Beauty Sensitive Skin Mineral Face Cream SPF50, £27, Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral Skinscreen, £38, and Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops, £39.
Our beauty editor Laura has also tried The Ordinary UV Filters SPF 45 Serum out, and says, "I've been really impressed by this new formula, especially given the price. It doesn't leave a white tinge on the skin at all, and makes skin feel soft and smooth but not greasy, and with a fairly matte yet healthy finish (it's probably not one for very oily skin though). This would be great as both a 'holiday' sun cream and an everyday one, whatever the weather."

The Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum is a classic for a reason, and one shopper said it gives 'visible results' An Estée Lauder serum that shoppers swear by is now on sale at Boots. The famous Advanced Night Repair Serum Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex in the 30ml size has been cut from £65 to £48.75 and beauty buffs are big fans. One shopper said: "Great product, easy to use with visible results when used daily." The serum, which fights back at signs of aging by promoting your skin's natural renewal cycle targets fine lines and wrinkles. Shoppers have been raving about its anti-aging properties online, with one Boots customer who reviewed the serum saying: "I'm 75 and most people say I look at least 10 to 15 years younger. I put a lot of that down to this serum. Try it regularly and see." Other anti-aging serums to try include the L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser Tri-Peptides Age-Correcting Serum which is 50% off at LookFantastic, down from £32 to £16. It contains collagen peptide fractions and elasti-peptides that are said to smooth and firm the complexion whilst also helping skin to appear like it has better elasticity. Another option is the Paula's Choice Resist Anti-ageing Clear Skin Hydrator which costs £39 at Cult Beauty. One shopper said: "I love all the Paula's Choice range. It's great for ageing spotty skin. I use this at night and it leaves my skin hydrated and plump!" One shopper had reservations about the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum however writing: "I've been using this for a few nights now, not really noticed a difference as its early days but why doesn't it have a nice smell? I'm not impressed that they didn't factor a scent whilst developing this product with an astonishing price tag." However others love the serum, saying: "Keeps my skin feeling soft and looking younger; at 60 I need all the help I can get! If I don't use this serum as part of my bedtime routine my skin has more visible fine lines, texture appears drier, pores seem more obvious and it looks tired. "The good condition of my skin is frequently commented on which is flattering and encouraging. Only a small amount of serum is required so a bottle lasts a while. Yes, I've tried other products but always come back to this. Great product, it works for me." Another said: "Love it. I'm almost 50 have no wrinkles yet. I've been using this product for three years now."

Braun epilator that makes 'skin smooth in no time' is cut by 57%

Users say there's 'no more fuss with waxing or shaving' when using the device Hair removal can seem like an endless task, so it's no surprise there are a lot of products on the market that claim to help make it easier, but a lot of them come with a pretty hefty price tag. Until now, as one retailer adds discounts on devices in time for summer. Amazon has cut the price of the Braun Silk-épil 9 Flex SkinSpa Epilator down to £159.99, a massive 57% saving from its usual price of £369.99. The product features a 360-degree flexible head, along with a mini shaver, exfoliation brush, massage pad, and can be used both wet and dry. It's said to be able to cut hairs as short as 0.5mm, and that one use will achieve 'an entire month of smooth skin.' The head contains 40 tiny tweezers, and it can run for up to 50 minutes on one charge. It also has two modes - gentle and power. If you're looking for an alternative, Boots has the Panasonic ES-EY90 five-in-one full body epilator kit for £134.99 - £65 down from its usual price of £199.99. It comes with a range of attachments, including a main epilation head with 'double-disc technology ', featuring 60 tweezers, able to cut hairs as short as 0.5mm. It can be used wet or dry and also includes a bikini comb, gentle cap, sonic scrub brush, shaver head, pop-up trimmer, and foot care head. It also features a pressure centre and can run for up to 50 minutes on one charge. If the idea of epilating doesn't appeal, LOOKFANTASTIC has a Silk'n 7 Light-Based Hair Removal Device for £349.30 - down 30 per cent from its usual price of £499. This can be used for the face and body, and includes three attachments, as well as a separate razor and a charging cable. It works by using light to open the pores and remove hairs at the root. Going back to the Braun epilator, it has a 4.7 out of five rating on Amazon. "It works better if you don't press too much on your skin, just gently and not too fast and your skin will be smooth in no time," said one customer. "I absolutely love it and I'm so glad I got it for myself. No more fuss with the waxing or shaving and red spots." Another said: "I love the way the head moves to your body as it gives you a much smoother finish. "Epilators do hurt, however, if you're used to using an epilator ,I think you will find this a lot more comfortable. I also found the smart sensor helpful too." Another users branded it "game-changing". However, some thought the effectiveness did not match its price: "It's uncomfortable to use and stings the legs for the rest of the day. Doesn't last one month, as after three days I had to shave my legs again. "Comes with a bikini line shaver. I cannot justify the price for this product as £370 is extortionate for a product I can only describe as being a value of at most £100."
