Manchester United's winless run in the Premier League reached six games after a dismal 4-3 defeat at Brentford, while Alexander Isak's late penalty rescued top five chasers Newcastle in a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim's side are languishing in 15th place following the latest setback in their wretched top-flight campaign.
United are focused on salvaging their forgettable season by winning the Europa League.
They will host Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final second leg next Thursday protecting a 3-0 lead and Amorim made a host of changes, resting Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
With an average age of 22 years and 270 days, United's starting line-up was the third-youngest in Premier League history.
Aged 17 years and 156 days, Chido Obi became the youngest player to start a Premier League match for United, while inexperienced duo Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass also featured.

In the 14th minute, Mason Mount scored only his second league goal for United since joining from Chelsea in 2023 as he took Alejandro Garnacho's pass and slotted home from eight yards.
But Brentford hit back in the 27th minute when United defender Luke Shaw deflected Michael Kayode's effort into his own net.
United's leaky defence were punished in the 33rd minute as Kevin Schade headed Christian Norgaard's cross past Altay Bayindir.
Adding to Amorim's problems, United defender Matthijs de Ligt limped off with a first half injury.
Lacklustre United conceded again when Schade struck with a 70th minute header.
Yoane Wissa completed the rout four minutes later, poking home for his 18th league goal this season.
Garnacho's 82nd minute blast from the edge of the area was followed by Amad Diallo's stoppage-time effort for the visitors.
But it was little consolation for United, who have lost 12 of Amorim's 24 league games, winning only six times.
Spurs held
Tottenham are also looking to win the Europa League to paper over the cracks in a miserable campaign.
Ange Postecoglou's side warmed up for their semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt with a 1-1 draw at West Ham.
Tottenham have only one win in their last nine league matches and sit a lowly 16th in the table, leaving them facing their lowest finish since 1976-77.

Birthday girl Kgothatso Montjane wins Round 1 match at Roland-Garros

South African star Kgothatso Montjane won her first round wheelchair match against Chile's Macarena Cabrillana 6-3, 6-3 in windy conditions on court 11 at Roland-Garros on Tuesday. The win coincided with Montjane's 39th birthday. She mentioned that she was very chuffed when arriving at Roland-Garros this morning, she was asked if she was competing in the junior event! Prior to the commencement of the match, Kgothatso Montjane had some equipment issues with a broken strap on her wheelchair. It was repaired and then the repairs had to be redone. 'It's time for a new chair. This one is six-years-old. It might be tired.' Thankfully, the chair issues did not impact Montjane's performance, although there were some anxious moments prior to the match. 'I was just hopeful that they (organisers) would get me going.' There were potential issues with Montjane not being able to stay in her chair if the strap was not able to be repaired. 'If the strap was unable to be repaired, it would have made it challenging for the umpire as the rules state that I must be in the chair at all times.' Regarding her win, Montjane was not totally satisfied with her performance. 'It was a good win, but I honestly feel like it could have been better. 'I made the match difficult for myself. I felt like that I didn't use the court really well. 'I dropped quite a lot of balls short.' There were some positives for Montjane. 'However, I played well under pressure. After taking the lead in the first set, I felt like I should have taken control. 'I'm glad I managed to seal it up. 'It could be better. I'm not happy with the complete play.' Kgothatso Montjane described wanting more patience on her opponents serve. 'I was moving in too early, I had to wait and then I killed the momentum. 'I like it more when my opponent serves faster, and the ball has more energy. 'Otherwise, I have to create the energy myself.' Montjane outlined some areas of improvement she would like for her next match. 'I want to be more consistent, hit with more depth, and put more speed on the ball. I want more topspin with my forehand so that I don't continue to hit the balls long.' The conditions on court 11 consisted of a strong, swirling wind. 'The wind made it hard for my ball toss and I found it tricky to work out which way that the wind was blowing.' Kgothatso Montjane admitted that she was unlikely to celebrate her birthday as she is currently battling a neck injury as a result 'of playing for the last three weeks.' 'All I want to do is shower, get my neck worked on, and get as much rest as I can.' Montjane revealed that she supports Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United. Kaizer Chiefs finished ninth in the recently-concluded Betway Premiership, while Manchester United fared even worse, ending 15th in the English Premier League. Kgothatso Montjane will need to show as much determination as it took supporting those teams this season when she next plays! Montjane will next be up against fourth seed Ziying Wang of China in the quarter-finals. Photo: Adrian Dennis/AFP Image: Adrian Dennis/AFP Bruno Fernandes has reportedly rejected a huge offer to leave Manchester United for the Saudi Pro League, opting to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million ($135 million) for the 30-year-old Portugal international but had not made an official approach. United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. United captain Fernandes was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. "If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is and football sometimes is like this," he said. But as speculation swirled over his future, manager Amorim last week expressed his belief that his compatriot would remain at Old Trafford. Former United captain Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was "significant". "I think that there was an element of this situation that meant United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal," he said. "But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player -- only player at times -- for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important." Neville added: "To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character. "The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them." United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad. The club have already signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Departures could include Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals for United since his £47 million move from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. AFP

Jadon Sancho to leave Chelsea after loan spell

End of Sancho's freedom Chelsea have decided against making Jadon Sancho's loan move a permanent one, and have paid the £5 million penalty charge as the player returns to Manchester United. Photo: Andrze J Iwanczuk/AFP Image: Andrze J Iwanczuk/AFP Chelsea have rejected the chance to sign Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United after the winger failed to agree personal terms at Stamford Bridge, reports said Tuesday. The 25-year-old joined Chelsea on loan in August last year in a deal that featured an obligation to buy him for up to £25 million ($34 million). The Athletic reported that the club and Sancho had failed to agree a deal and Chelsea must now pay a £5 million penalty charge to United. Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League, with Sancho scoring the third goal in last week's 4-1 win against Real Betis. Next Stay Close ✕ But the England international has had an inconsistent season, scoring just five times and making 10 assists in 41 appearances for Chelsea. He scored just one Premier League goal after early December. When asked about Sancho's future following last week's Conference League victory in Poland, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: "From now on we are going to sit with the club and decide what happens for next year." Sancho, whose contract at United runs until 2026, will return to Old Trafford. The club have an option to extend the deal by a further year. The forward joined United from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million in 2021 but failed to live up to his price tag. He was involved in a public spat with former United boss Erik ten Hag early in the 2023/24 season and did not make another appearance before being loaned to his former club Dortmund. He played once for United in the 2024/25 season, in the Community Shield in August, before making the switch to Chelsea. Chelsea on Monday announced the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £18 million. The 20-year-old will be available to feature for the Blues at the Club World Cup later this month. AFP
