Alexander-Arnold's tearful farewell after 20 years at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold was cheered by a celebratory Anfield on his final Liverpool appearance on Sunday, with the player dubbed 'the Scouser in our team' bowing out in tears after two decades at his boyhood club. The Liverpool vice-captain was booed by some Reds fans earlier this month in his first game after confirming that he was leaving at the end of this season, amid many reports that a move to Real Madrid was a done deal. But the 26-year-old was staunchly defended by teammates including Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, while former manager Juergen Klopp — who gave Alexander-Arnold his debut in 2016 — said he turned off his television when he heard the boos. It's been a rollercoaster for Trent 🥹🔴 #SSPL | #LIVCRY — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 25, 2025 The manner of Alexander-Arnold's departure, as a free agent and after some arguably mixed messages about his future, will still rankle with Liverpool supporters and he admitted to some trepidation. 'I didn't know what to expect stepping out at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to play for the club one more time,' he told Sky Sports. Alexander-Arnold's introduction at half time was met with excitement, though, and his desperation to sign off in style was evident. Had it not been for a poor effort by Darwin Nunez, he would have added another superb assist to his collection. Trent x Robbo They've scaled football's heights together 🤝🔴 #SSPL | #LIVCRY — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 25, 2025 He was in tears at the final whistle and seemed relieved to get yet more cheers when receiving his Premier League winners' medal, before he raised his arms aloft and thumped the Liverpool badge on what he said was 'the best day for me in my life'. 'The reception I got means the world to me, I have played hundreds of games but have never felt so loved and cared for,' Alexander-Arnold said. 'From the bottom of my heart I hope that one day the fans and supporters will recognise what I did for the team.' Liverpool boss Arne Slot was in agreement and hailed the fans' reception for Alexander-Arnold 'Maybe it also helped what an unbelievable half he played,' he said with a smile.

Arsenal relief as Declan Rice secures narrow win over Newcastle

Arsenal snapped a season-long jinx against Newcastle United with a nervy 1-0 win in their last Premier League home game on Sunday all but securing runners-up spot and a place in next season's Champions League. Three defeats against Eddie Howe's side during the campaign could easily have become four had the visitors converted a flurry of early chances, but Declan Rice calmed the nerves. Rice punished Newcastle for their first-half profligacy when he connected sweetly with Martin Odegaard's pass to rifle a curling effort past Nick Pope in the 55th minute. Arsenal, winless in their last three league games, were indebted to keeper David Raya in the first half as he made saves from Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Dan Burn as the visitors dominated. Whatever was said at halftime appeared to wake them from their lethargy though and with an away game to finish at bottom club Southampton next weekend a third successive second-placed finish looks guaranteed, albeit this time a distant one. The Gunners are not ready to give up that second spot 👀🔝 📺 Stream #ARSNEW on DStv: — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 18, 2025 Arsenal have 71 points from 37 games and only sixth-placed Manchester City, who have two games remaining, can match that. Newcastle remain in third place with 66 points but only one point separates them from seventh-placed Nottingham Forest as the battle for the other three Champions League spots will go down to the wire next Sunday. Arsenal's season promised so much but a League Cup semifinal defeat by Newcastle, a flimsy attempt to chase Liverpool in the title race and a Champions League semifinal exit against Paris St Germain meant their campaign fizzled out. They went into Sunday's game knowing victory would guarantee them a top-five finish and Champions League spot. Yet on the flipside one win in their last six league games had raised the unthinkable spectre of finishing sixth in what for most of the season looked like a two-horse title race. The Gunners all but seal a third straight second-place finish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥈 #SSPL | #ARSNEW — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 18, 2025 The absence of Newcastle's prolific striker Alexander Isak because of a groin injury was a boost for Arsenal but they looked edgy, understandably considering they had not scored a goal in three games against Eddie Howe's side this season. Newcastle were all over them in the opening stages and only Raya prevented the visitors taking the lead. First the Spaniard denied Guimaraes and then Livramento should have done much better but shot too close to Raya. Arsenal invited Newcastle pressure and Barnes was allowed to run through unchallenged before his low shot was turned around the upright by the unsighted Raya. The pick of his first-half saves though was a reflex effort to palm away a towering header by Burn. Arsenal's attack lacked fluency and Nick Pope was not seriously tested in the opening period but the tension around the Emirates was lifted 10 minutes after the break. Martin Odegaard played the ball towards the midfielder and he swept a sublime first-time shot past Pope. It was Arsenal's 52nd shot against Newcastle this season and the first one that found the net. Newcastle were less threatening after the break but former Arsenal player Joe Willock did wriggle through but smashed an angled shot over the bar. Reuters

Brentford boost Euro hopes with win over Man Utd in seven-goal thriller

Brentford edged a young and much-changed Manchester United side 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League encounter on Sunday to boost their hopes of qualifying for European competition for the first time. Two goals from Kevin Schade guided Thomas Frank's side up to ninth with 52 points, a potential Conference League spot within touching distance with three games left. United remain 15th with 39 points. 'Yeah, I think we definitely have momentum — we've had a really good run of games, there's a flow of playing well,' Frank told BBC. 'We need to keep that up. The next one is the most important game and that's Ipswich away. It's already a good season, let's see if it can be an incredible season.' "He's capable of the spectacular." 🚀✨ Garnacho is fighting to keep Man Utd in this 👇 📺 Stream #BREMUN on DStv: #SSPL — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 4, 2025 With an eye on the Europa League semifinal second leg against Athletic Bilbao, Ruben Amorim named United's youngest starting line-up in Premier League history. Seventeen-year-old forward Chido Obi became their youngest starter. Luke Shaw was the most senior player in United's line-up and the 29-year-old nearly gave Brentford the lead with an own goal when he tried to head a long ball back to keeper Altay Bayindir, who was off his line, but the ball crept wide of the post. Brentford pegged United back but the visitors scored against the run of play when Alejandro Garnacho found space on the left wing and put in a low cross that found Mason Mount, who directed his shot past goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Brentford equalised from a set-piece when United failed to clear a long throw-in from Michael Kayode, with Mikkel Damsgaard's shot deflecting off Shaw for an own goal. Brentford took the lead six minutes later when Christian Norgaard put in a cross to the far post and Schade rose above the defence to power home a header. Man Utd strike first against Brentford 💥 📺 Stream #BREMUN on DStv: #SSPL — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 4, 2025 United were livid, however, as defender Matthijs de Ligt had gone down on the edge of the box clutching his leg after a challenge but referee Anthony Taylor did not stop play, allowing Brentford to score. De Ligt was unable to continue and Amorim was forced to bring Harry Maguire on while the Portuguese manager made two halftime substitutions to introduce Amad Diallo and Leny Yoro. United had a couple of chances to equalise but they were smothered by the Brentford defence and Flekken before the home side came alive and made it 3-1 in the 70th minute. Bryan Mbeumo delivered another cross to the far post where Schade leapt into the air to score his second header. 'Very happy, that is what we wanted. We want to win every game in the end to push for Europe,' Schade said. Less than four minutes later, Brentford carved United's defence apart with a free-flowing move where Damsgaard and Kayode combined to give Yoane Wissa a simple tap-in into an empty net. United then flickered into life when Argentine winger Garnacho pulled the trigger from outside the box to find the net in the 82nd minute. With seven minutes added on, Brentford fans were biting their nails when Diallo's shot took a deflection and went through Flekken's legs to make it 4-3. But United ran out of time as they fell to a club record 16th league defeat in a season in the Premier League era. 'There were changes but it's Manchester United so any team that goes out there that puts on the shirt we need to perform and win games,' Mount said. 'I know there's a big game on Thursday but first and foremost was today. We needed to win the game but we didn't.'

Manchester United youngsters crash at Brentford as Tottenham holds West Ham

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire controls the ball during their Premier League match against Brentford. Image: Justin Tallis / AFP Manchester United's winless run in the Premier League reached six games after a dismal 4-3 defeat at Brentford, while Alexander Isak's late penalty rescued top five chasers Newcastle in a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday. Ruben Amorim's side are languishing in 15th place following the latest setback in their wretched top-flight campaign. United are focused on salvaging their forgettable season by winning the Europa League. They will host Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final second leg next Thursday protecting a 3-0 lead and Amorim made a host of changes, resting Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. With an average age of 22 years and 270 days, United's starting line-up was the third-youngest in Premier League history. Aged 17 years and 156 days, Chido Obi became the youngest player to start a Premier League match for United, while inexperienced duo Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass also featured. "He's capable of the spectacular." 🚀✨ Garnacho is fighting to keep Man Utd in this 👇 📺 Stream #BREMUN on DStv: #SSPL — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 4, 2025 In the 14th minute, Mason Mount scored only his second league goal for United since joining from Chelsea in 2023 as he took Alejandro Garnacho's pass and slotted home from eight yards. But Brentford hit back in the 27th minute when United defender Luke Shaw deflected Michael Kayode's effort into his own net. United's leaky defence were punished in the 33rd minute as Kevin Schade headed Christian Norgaard's cross past Altay Bayindir. Adding to Amorim's problems, United defender Matthijs de Ligt limped off with a first half injury. Lacklustre United conceded again when Schade struck with a 70th minute header. Yoane Wissa completed the rout four minutes later, poking home for his 18th league goal this season. Garnacho's 82nd minute blast from the edge of the area was followed by Amad Diallo's stoppage-time effort for the visitors. But it was little consolation for United, who have lost 12 of Amorim's 24 league games, winning only six times. Spurs held Tottenham are also looking to win the Europa League to paper over the cracks in a miserable campaign. Ange Postecoglou's side warmed up for their semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt with a 1-1 draw at West Ham. Tottenham have only one win in their last nine league matches and sit a lowly 16th in the table, leaving them facing their lowest finish since 1976-77. Video Player is loading.
