Arsenal relief as Declan Rice secures narrow win over Newcastle
Three defeats against Eddie Howe's side during the campaign could easily have become four had the visitors converted a flurry of early chances, but Declan Rice calmed the nerves.
Rice punished Newcastle for their first-half profligacy when he connected sweetly with Martin Odegaard's pass to rifle a curling effort past Nick Pope in the 55th minute.
Arsenal, winless in their last three league games, were indebted to keeper David Raya in the first half as he made saves from Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Dan Burn as the visitors dominated.
Whatever was said at halftime appeared to wake them from their lethargy though and with an away game to finish at bottom club Southampton next weekend a third successive second-placed finish looks guaranteed, albeit this time a distant one.

Arsenal have 71 points from 37 games and only sixth-placed Manchester City, who have two games remaining, can match that.
Newcastle remain in third place with 66 points but only one point separates them from seventh-placed Nottingham Forest as the battle for the other three Champions League spots will go down to the wire next Sunday.
Arsenal's season promised so much but a League Cup semifinal defeat by Newcastle, a flimsy attempt to chase Liverpool in the title race and a Champions League semifinal exit against Paris St Germain meant their campaign fizzled out.
They went into Sunday's game knowing victory would guarantee them a top-five finish and Champions League spot.
Yet on the flipside one win in their last six league games had raised the unthinkable spectre of finishing sixth in what for most of the season looked like a two-horse title race.

The absence of Newcastle's prolific striker Alexander Isak because of a groin injury was a boost for Arsenal but they looked edgy, understandably considering they had not scored a goal in three games against Eddie Howe's side this season.
Newcastle were all over them in the opening stages and only Raya prevented the visitors taking the lead.
First the Spaniard denied Guimaraes and then Livramento should have done much better but shot too close to Raya.
Arsenal invited Newcastle pressure and Barnes was allowed to run through unchallenged before his low shot was turned around the upright by the unsighted Raya.
The pick of his first-half saves though was a reflex effort to palm away a towering header by Burn.
Arsenal's attack lacked fluency and Nick Pope was not seriously tested in the opening period but the tension around the Emirates was lifted 10 minutes after the break.
Martin Odegaard played the ball towards the midfielder and he swept a sublime first-time shot past Pope.
It was Arsenal's 52nd shot against Newcastle this season and the first one that found the net.
Newcastle were less threatening after the break but former Arsenal player Joe Willock did wriggle through but smashed an angled shot over the bar.

Image: EPA With the 2024/25 season about to kick-off in Europe's top footballing nations, we take a a look at those likely to be lifting the trophy come the season's end, celebrating continental football qualification and the ones likely to be crying into their beer mugs in the English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and Bundesliga. 1 English Premier League 1.1 Likely champions After masterminding a shock triumph without major transfer moves last season, Arne Slot and Liverpool have enjoyed a bumper transfer window so far, and are not done yet. This, coupled with a dominant display last season, has made them favourites to defend their title. The only question for Slot may be the time it will take for the new arrivals to bed in with the rest of the established stars. Runners-up Arsenal have also strengthened, though, and are likely to once again be the Reds' strongest challengers. The wily Pep Guardiola's Manchester City will also be determined to return to their glory days and can't be written off. 1.2 Europe bound Those likely to join Liverpool, Arsenal and City in qualifying for the Champions League include Fifa Club World Cup winners Chelsea. The only thing potentially ruling them out of title contention is the question of squad depth. Manchester United are long shots for Europe, should Ruben Amorim's revival finally bear fruit. Europa is more likely for Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham, though. 1.3 Relegation candidates Considering the struggles newly promoted sides have faced staying up in the Premier League, recently promoted Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland are widely tipped to go straight back down to the Championship. Yet with Brentford in seeming disarray amid a worrying exodus of key players to rival teams, the race to avoid the axe may not be that straightforward this season. Barca were an irrepressible attacking force last season – banging in 102 goals with rising star Lamine Yemal justifiably hogging the headlines. They were vulnerable defensively at times, though, and that could be their undoing. Runners-up Real will look to exploit any weakness, but talisman Vinicius Junior cannot afford another off-key season if Xabi Alonso's side are to depose the Catalans. 2.2 Europe bound Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are the other sides tipped to qualify for the Champions League. Real Betis and Real Sociedad are considered among the favourites for the Europa League places. 2.3 Relegation candidates Promoted sides Real Oviedo, Elche, and Levante are expected to struggle this season, though stability may prove a saving grace. The same cannot be said of Sevilla, whose financial troubles have made them part of the conversation. Levante, who topped the second tier last season, could benefit should Sevilla fail to arrest their slide. The side boasts a perfect blend of youth and experience and is tipped to rule the roost for a number of years to come. The fact that they have held onto most of their stars, and strengthened in key areas, does not bode well for any potential title challengers. It's likely to be another landslide victory for the side from the capital that only lost twice last season. 3.2 Europe bound Marseille and Monaco are the leading challengers for runners-up and Champions League qualification spots. Marseille benefited from an ambitious summer spending spree, while Monaco brought in experience. Nice, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Lens could contend for the remaining European places. Lyon would have to sort out their finances, though. 3.3 Relegation candidates While there are no clear favourites to be relegated from Ligue 1, Lorient, Paris and Metz are all expected to be dragged into the survival scrap. 4 Serie A (Italy) 4.1 Likely champions After winning Italy's top football league in two of the past three seasons, Napoli are tipped to make it three in four. The continued decline of Juventus has added unpredictability and excitement to the Italian top flight, with Napoli, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Atalanta all being crowned champions since 'The Old Lady' last lifted the Scudetto. Inter finished second last season and will be in with a shout of going one better this season, having lifted the title in the 2023/24 campaign. 4.2 Europe bound When it comes to the European places, it's hard to look beyond these former and current champions. 4.3 Relegation candidates Promoted teams have more of a fighting chance of staying up in Italy's top flight than in other European leagues. This will be music to the ears of fans of Cremonese, Pisa and Sassuolo. Of the trio, Pisa are given the strongest chance of survival by pundits. Hellas Verona are tipped as the likeliest of Serie A's existing teams to get the axe, but Lecce and Parma are also not safe.

Former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams recently urged Arteta to give England midfielder Declan Rice the armband instead of Odegaard. But the Gunners boss mounted a strong defence of Odegaard's leadership qualities after revealing Arsenal's players had voted for him to be retained as captain. "My opinion is clear, and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players," Arteta told reporters on Friday. By a mile, by a big, big (margin), by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that." Arsenal, who last won the English title in 2004, have finished as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons and are without a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. Their inability to last the pace in the title race has led to mounting questions about Arsenal's mental strength, with Odegaard among those in the firing line. Arsenal title winner Adams, quoted in the Irish Independent, said: "Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. "You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. "Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain." But former Arsenal captain Arteta said he could talk about leadership "for hours" and had no doubts about Odegaard's ability to inspire his team-mates. "What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening," he said. Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Manchester United on Sunday, then host newly-promoted Leeds before a difficult stretch that will see them play champions Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle. Arteta admits that run will provide early evidence of their potential in the title race. "Yes, especially with the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are," he said. "We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together." "He is going to learn but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years. "That's why we paid so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club." Asked if Sesko could start against Arsenal, the United boss said: "We didn't have a lot of time but he's ready. "Physically, he's ready. That is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart. Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking. "He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness, so he's ready to play. We will see if he's going to start." Sesko scored 21 goals for German side Leipzig last term and has made a good first impression on Amorim at United's new-look Carrington training complex. "He's one guy who stays here, has lunch, and goes to the medical department, does the stretching," he said. "He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that and that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect with that young guy. "I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready, every game is like do or die'. Sesko's arrival in Manchester has raised fresh questions over the future of United striker Rasmus Hojlund. The 22-year-old Denmark international has been strongly linked with an exit, just two years on from joining from Atalanta. Hojlund said on United's pre-season tour that he wants to stay at United, but reports of a potential move to AC Milan persist. "He is one more option," Amorim said. "We will see.
