Champions, contenders, and relegation candidates in Europe's top five leagues

With the 2024/25 season about to kick-off in Europe's top footballing nations, we take a a look at those likely to be lifting the trophy come the season's end, celebrating continental football qualification and the ones likely to be crying into their beer mugs in the English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and Bundesliga. 1 English Premier League 1.1 Likely champions
After masterminding a shock triumph without major transfer moves last season, Arne Slot and Liverpool have enjoyed a bumper transfer window so far, and are not done yet.
This, coupled with a dominant display last season, has made them favourites to defend their title.
The only question for Slot may be the time it will take for the new arrivals to bed in with the rest of the established stars.
Runners-up Arsenal have also strengthened, though, and are likely to once again be the Reds' strongest challengers. The wily Pep Guardiola's Manchester City will also be determined to return to their glory days and can't be written off. 1.2 Europe bound
Those likely to join Liverpool, Arsenal and City in qualifying for the Champions League include Fifa Club World Cup winners Chelsea.
The only thing potentially ruling them out of title contention is the question of squad depth.
Manchester United are long shots for Europe, should Ruben Amorim's revival finally bear fruit. Europa is more likely for Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham, though. 1.3 Relegation candidates
Considering the struggles newly promoted sides have faced staying up in the Premier League, recently promoted Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland are widely tipped to go straight back down to the Championship.
Yet with Brentford in seeming disarray amid a worrying exodus of key players to rival teams, the race to avoid the axe may not be that straightforward this season.
Barcelona's young Spanish forward Lamine Yamal had an outstanding campaign for the La Liga champions last season.

2 LaLiga (Spain)
2.1 Likely champions
Hansi Flick's Barcelona are defending champs and enter the season as favourites once again, though Real Madrid might have something to say about that.
Barca were an irrepressible attacking force last season – banging in 102 goals with rising star Lamine Yemal justifiably hogging the headlines.
They were vulnerable defensively at times, though, and that could be their undoing. Runners-up Real will look to exploit any weakness, but talisman Vinicius Junior cannot afford another off-key season if Xabi Alonso's side are to depose the Catalans. 2.2 Europe bound
Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are the other sides tipped to qualify for the Champions League. Real Betis and Real Sociedad are considered among the favourites for the Europa League places. 2.3 Relegation candidates
Promoted sides Real Oviedo, Elche, and Levante are expected to struggle this season, though stability may prove a saving grace.
The same cannot be said of Sevilla, whose financial troubles have made them part of the conversation. Levante, who topped the second tier last season, could benefit should Sevilla fail to arrest their slide.

3 Ligue 1 (France)
3.1 Likely champions
League and European champions Paris Saint-Germain are expected to continue where they left off last season under Luis Enrique.
The side boasts a perfect blend of youth and experience and is tipped to rule the roost for a number of years to come.
The fact that they have held onto most of their stars, and strengthened in key areas, does not bode well for any potential title challengers. It's likely to be another landslide victory for the side from the capital that only lost twice last season. 3.2 Europe bound
Marseille and Monaco are the leading challengers for runners-up and Champions League qualification spots.
Marseille benefited from an ambitious summer spending spree, while Monaco brought in experience. Nice, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Lens could contend for the remaining European places. Lyon would have to sort out their finances, though. 3.3 Relegation candidates
While there are no clear favourites to be relegated from Ligue 1, Lorient, Paris and Metz are all expected to be dragged into the survival scrap.
4 Serie A (Italy)
4.1 Likely champions
After winning Italy's top football league in two of the past three seasons, Napoli are tipped to make it three in four.
The continued decline of Juventus has added unpredictability and excitement to the Italian top flight, with Napoli, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Atalanta all being crowned champions since 'The Old Lady' last lifted the Scudetto.
Inter finished second last season and will be in with a shout of going one better this season, having lifted the title in the 2023/24 campaign. 4.2 Europe bound
When it comes to the European places, it's hard to look beyond these former and current champions. 4.3 Relegation candidates
Promoted teams have more of a fighting chance of staying up in Italy's top flight than in other European leagues.
This will be music to the ears of fans of Cremonese, Pisa and Sassuolo. Of the trio, Pisa are given the strongest chance of survival by pundits. Hellas Verona are tipped as the likeliest of Serie A's existing teams to get the axe, but Lecce and Parma are also not safe.

NEWCASTLE - Newcastle got a worrying glimpse of life without Alexander Isak as they were held to a 0-0 draw in their Premier League opener at Aston Villa despite Ezri Konsa's dismissal. Villa defender Konsa was sent off for a professional foul on Anthony Gordon midway through the second half on Saturday. But Newcastle were unable to take advantage in a toothless display that showed why they are so desperate to keep hold of Isak. The Sweden striker was not involved against Villa after reportedly telling the club he wants to leave to join Premier League champions Liverpool. Isak, 25, was the subject of a rejected £110 million ($149 million) bid from Liverpool earlier this month. "I don't think we dominated, chance-wise, the way we wanted. We were maybe a little bit too anxious to score," Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said. "If you're not totally together in the Premier League, you're going to find it very difficult, but I think we answered a few questions today in terms of our spirit." Isak, who helped Newcastle secure Champions League qualification and end their 56-year trophy drought last season, is reportedly refusing to train or play in an effort to force his way out of the club he joined from Real Sociedad in 2022. He did not take part in Newcastle's pre-season tour, training alone at his former club in Spain instead. Gordon led the line in Isak's absence as the England winger started out of position in the centre of Newcastle's three-man attack. Anthony Elanga made his Newcastle debut after the winger's £55 million ($74 million) move from Nottingham Forest, while Malick Thiaw, a defender signed from AC Milan, was among the substitutes. Without Isak to power their attack, Newcastle were unable to make their territorial dominance count as Howe was left hoping for a swift resolution to the transfer saga, which could run until the window closes in September. "From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It's taking away the focus of the players and the supporters," Howe said. "We want to be united together. We'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that." - Profligate Newcastle - Villa boss Unai Emery could take heart from his team's backs-to-the-wall effort after Konsa's exit. Emery had admitted it was a "challenging" transfer window after his club were constrained by Premier League profit and sustainability rules, leaving them with just two new signings. Marco Bizot, recruited from Brest, made his debut in goal in the absence of the suspended Emiliano Martinez, while Evann Guessand, a striker signed from another French club, Rennes, was on the bench. Gordon was equally profligate when he headed Harvey Barnes' cross over the bar from just six yards. Semenyo racist abuse at Liverpool shocks Bournemouth captain Smith
A Liverpool fan who had been seen gesturing towards the Ghanaian as he took a throw-in was led away by police at half-time. Bournemouth captain Adam Smith said he was left shocked and angered after teammate Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a fan during the Cherries' 4-2 defeat at Liverpool in the opening game of the Premier League season. The match was briefly halted after half an hour when Semenyo told referee Anthony Taylor of the incident and both managers were informed. Tottenham condemned the online racist abuse directed towards Mathys Tel this week after he missed a penalty in Spurs' UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. 'He's a little bit down. Something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect,' Smith added. 'It's more anger. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately but the police went and sorted it. The Liverpool players were very supportive to Ant and the rest of the team. Just so angry. 'We've had discussions with the Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do. We've been doing it for a long time now and no-one is getting it. I just feel sorry for Ant and he's had to take that. The whole country is watching and it's shocking.' Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said the incident had taken the shine off a thrilling start to the Premier League campaign on the field. 'It is a shame that the first game of the Premier League, both teams playing a really good game we are speaking about this,' said the Spaniard. 'Most of the news will be about this thing and it is still a big problem not just in football but overall. We should be talking about how great the game has been.' Liverpool boss Arne Slot spoke to Semenyo after the match and praised his mental strength. 'We definitely need to address this. Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to keep digging for gold as they prepare to start their latest bid for a first Premier League title since 2004 against revamped Manchester United on Sunday. Arteta's side have finished as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons, sparking criticism of their failure to get over the line in the title race. Amorim knows Sesko will be key to that target and he believes the 22-year-old Slovenian is ready to rise to the challenge. 'I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure. Every game is like do or die',' Amorim said. 'He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that.'
