‘South India should take inspiration from Arunachal Pradesh': Chum Darang's comment about Hindi starts online discussion

Chum Darang's comment about Hindi has sparked talks on social media. In a YouTube chat with Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiyaa, she explained the reason behind the popularity of Hindi in Arunachal Pradesh. The north-eastern Indian state has over 100 tribes, each with its own language. So, Hindi becomes the common language that helps people talk to each other. According to her, most people in her state understand and speak Hindi well. 'Hindi is our common language. That's why my Hindi is decent, compared to others,' she said. In the same interview, she asked for inclusivity for north-eastern people. 'We look different. But, if you don't include us, how will you know about us? Things are changing. Let's give it some time,' she said. The clip about the use of Hindi in the North East as a bridge for communication was shared on Reddit. Even though the interview was released on YouTube in February, the Reddit post started various discussions. An extra caption was added in the Reddit clip. It says, 'South India should take inspiration from Arunachal Pradesh.' Reddit users commented on the issue. 'Language should unite us, but instead it's dividing. I don't know how! We Indians are a different breed, I guess!' One of them pointed out why it's not the same in South India as in Arunachal Pradesh. 'The equivalence might not hold true for the South since the majority state language is the same, unlike Naga tribes or Arunachal. If you speak in broken Hindi/English in Karnataka or Andhra, I find that people tend to respond in Hindi,' the user wrote while claiming that the most of the issues seen on social media were magnified and politically-induced. 'It won't be the same for states in the South. They've their own language, the whole state. That's why Hindi doesn't work there, just like it doesn't work in any other states of NE,' agreed another user. In April, the Maharashtra government made Hindi compulsory as a third language in classes 1 to 5 across English and Marathi medium schools. This triggered protests, political opposition and backlash from educationists. They saw it as a threat to Marathi identity and a push for the BJP's 'Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan' agenda. Social media is now crowded with videos of people being harassed for not speaking Marathi in Maharashtra. The state's capital is Mumbai, the home of the Hindi movie industry, where Chum works. Chum Darang represented India at Miss Earth India 2016 and Miss Asia World 2017. She is known for her roles in films like Badhai Do and Gangubai Kathiawadi. She gained widespread recognition as a strong contestant on Bigg Boss 18, finishing in the top 5. Her latest work is an Amazon Prime Video web series, Khauf. The OTT release features Monika Panwar, Rajat Kapoor, Abhishek Chauhan and Geetanjali Kulkarni among others. The horror web series has received positive reviews.

‘After detention, we found out about deportation through viral video': Kin of Bengal migrant worker ‘pushed' into Bangladesh

A 19-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal has allegedly been pushed into Bangladesh after being detained in Rajasthan. The incident came to light after a purported video of the man, identified as Amir Sheikh from Jalalpur village under Kaliachowk police station in Malda, went viral on social media earlier this week. The family has lodged a formal complaint with the West Bengal Police. This comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is protesting in Parliament over the alleged harassment and detention of migrant workers from Bengal in various states during ongoing drives against alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to lead a protest rally in Kolkata on July 27. In the video, accessed by The Indian Express, Sheikh is seen speaking to residents in Bangladesh. He identifies himself, shares his West Bengal address, and alleges that after being detained for two months, he was recently sent across the border into Bangladesh. 'This is most unfortunate. Earlier too, Indian citizens from West Bengal were labelled as Bangladeshis and pushed into that country. We were able to bring some of them back through state government intervention. This cannot continue. I have spoken with the family members over the phone. Our government is trying. We may also go for legal recourse,' said Samirul Islam, chairman of the West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board and TMC Rajya Sabha MP, speaking to The Indian Express from Delhi. Officials in the West Bengal administration said they are in touch with authorities in Rajasthan. According to Amir's family, he had travelled to Rajasthan three months ago in search of work. 'About two months ago, we were told by the contractor that he had been detained as an illegal Bangladeshi national. He had documents with him, like an Aadhaar card and birth certificate, which he showed. But they still put him in a detention camp. On Tuesday, we saw a video on social media of him,' said Muhammad Ajmal Sheikh, Amir's uncle, speaking over the phone from Malda. 'We were shocked. Later yesterday, police officials came to our house and took all Amir's documents,' he said. 'We went to the police station and submitted a written complaint. We've lived here for generations, and Amir has all the documents. We want our boy back.' Family members said Amir lost his mother five years ago. His father, Muhammad Jim Sheikh, currently works as a migrant labourer in Uttar Pradesh. 'We have written to the district magistrate of Malda to take immediate steps to bring the boy back from Bangladesh. I personally visited the home of the migrant and spoke to his family members. They lost all contact with him after his detention two months ago,' said Asif Faruk, state general secretary (WB) of the Parijayi Sramik Aikya Manch (Migrant Workers' Unity Forum). This incident comes in the wake of several similar cases across states like Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh. On June 14, seven residents of West Bengal were detained in Mumbai and later pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF. Following intervention by the Bengal government, four youths from Murshidabad, one from Purba Bardhaman, and a husband-wife duo from North 24 Parganas were brought back from Bangladesh. Chhattisgarh govts Niyad Nellanar scheme opens doors of development in Bastar

Last Updated: Raipur, Jul 25 (PTI) An ambitious scheme of the Chhattisgarh government has enabled remote villages in the violence-hit Bastar region, which were once cut off from the mainstream of development for decades, to move forward on the path of growth, an official said. The 'Niyad Nellanar (your good village) scheme, a people-centric initiative, was launched on February 15 last year under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, an official statement said. It has turned out to be a revolutionary step to ensure sensitive and active governance in areas long deprived of basic amenities, it said, adding that Bastar was no longer just a region marked by conflict, but a symbol of hope and inclusive growth. Under the scheme, the government initially provided benefits of 52 schemes of 17 departments and 31 community facilities in villages located in a 5-km radius of the security camps. Later, the area was increased up to 10 km, officials said. CM Sai strongly believes that the mere presence of security camps is not enough, as governance must reach these regions in a compassionate, holistic and inclusive manner, the release said. Acting on this vision, the government established 54 new security camps across five Naxal-affected districts – Sukma, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Dantewada and Kanker of Bastar region (in the last one and a half year). Around 327 villages located within a 10-km radius of these camps were identified to be fully integrated into all major development schemes, it said. 'The winds of change are visible. In the education sector, 31 new primary schools have been sanctioned, out of which 13 have become functional. Of 185 new Anganwadi centres sanctioned, 107 are functioning, ensuring nutrition and early education for children. In the healthcare sector, 20 sub-health centres were approved, 16 of which have become functional," it said. 'These are the villages where people once had to trek miles through dense forests just to access basic medicine," the government added. The priority was also given to improving connectivity and communication. In areas where mobile networks were once non-existent, plans for installing 119 mobile towers were prepared and 43 of them are now operational. Approval was granted for 144 high-mast lights, and 92 villages now glow with light even at night. In road and bridge infrastructure, 173 projects were planned, of which 116 received approval and 26 have completed so far, it said. In terms of economic and social empowerment, over 70,954 Aadhaar cards have been issued, 46,172 senior citizens have received age certificates, and 11,133 new voter registrations have enabled participation in the democratic process. Ayushman Bharat health cards have been given to 46,172 people, ensuring access to free medical care, the release said. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a target was set to cover 12,232 families, of which 5,984 have received approval. Under the Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, 4,677 farmers have received financial assistance. The Swachh Bharat Mission has seen the construction of 6,460 individual household toilets. To make kitchens smoke-free, 18,983 women have received gas connections under the Ujjwala and Gau-Gas schemes. Additionally, 30 villages have been provided DTH connections, bringing them into the mainstream of information and entertainment, it said. This change is more than just numbers. It is the beginning of a new bond between the state and its citizens, built on trust, transparency and participation. People who were once distant from governance are now active stakeholders. Villagers themselves are monitoring anganwadi attendance, the quality of ration distribution, and the implementation of welfare schemes, it said. Bastar is no longer just a region marked by conflict. It's becoming a symbol of resilience, hope, and inclusive growth, it added. PTI TKP NP view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
