India Gaming Law Passed In LS: Promotion/Endorsement May Land You In Jail

Lok Sabha passes Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. Check who can be punished and for what jail terms and fines. The Lok Sabha has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, to effect a blanket and hard-hitting crackdown on online real money-based games in India. The government said it aims to curb addiction, money laundering, and financial fraud through such games in the country. The bill still needs to be passed by the Rajya Sabha, but if it goes as smoothly as in the lower house — via a voice note as the opposition protested on another subject — there could be wide-ranging impacts on individuals and organisations involved in the gaming ecosystem. Before we discuss the punishments mentioned in the draft, it needs to be noted that amid this whip on the online gaming platforms, the centre said it's trying to promote and develop e-sports in the country, which should protect non-gambling games. An authority is being set up to oversee e-sports, educational games, social games, and real money gaming, and all organisations will fall under its regulations. The bill outlaws all online betting and gambling activities — from online fantasy sports like Dream11 and My11Circle to online gambling like Poker, Rummy and other Card games and online lotteries, irrespective of whether they are considered 'skill' or luck-based. Punishments for Platforms & Individuals under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 Hence, anyone offering or running online real money games will face the following punishments: Promoting/Endorsing such Platforms The bill also hits hard on influencers and celebrities, banning them from promoting such games. In the past few years, several national cricketers, coaches, and even board members have been seen featuring in television ads. If this bill is passed, doing so after that will bring punishments of: Moreover, financial institutions like banks are also prohibited from offering services as simple as processing transactions on such platforms. Under the bill, authorised officials have been given the power to search and arrest without a warrant if someone is 'reasonably' suspected of committing offences under this Act. This applies to any place, including: physical premises/buildings, vehicles, computer resources, virtual digital spaces, electronic records/devices (with authority to override security codes). Drugs worth over Rs 412 crore seized in Meghalaya in five years: Official

Last Updated: Shillong, Aug 21 (PTI) Drugs worth more than Rs 412 crore have been seized in Meghalaya over the past five years and over a thousand people arrested in connection with trafficking, officials said on Thursday. Superintendent of Police (SP) in-charge of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Giri Prasad said between 2020 and 2025, the force and state police seized 400,993 grams of heroin, 12,756 kg of marijuana, 2,79,636 kg of opium, 76 kg of yaba tablets, 14 kg of white crystal meth and 1,24,906 bottles of codeine cough syrup. Prasad said the seized drugs were valued at over Rs 412 crore and nearly half of the contraband has already been disposed of through legal procedures. 'In the last five years, 1,061 people have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking and 603 cases have been registered," he told PTI. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government on Thursday felicitated eight officers and personnel of the ANTF for their pivotal role in the state's biggest single drug seizure, valued at Rs 4 crore, in East Jaintia Hills district. The felicitation was presented by Minister in-charge of Social Welfare Paul Lyngdoh in the presence of SP (ANTF) Giri Prasad, DREAM project Mission Director Francis Kharshiing and DIG (Administration) Jubi G Momin. The personnel were given cash awards and mementos. Lyngdoh said the successful seizure marked another milestone in the state's fight against narcotics. 'Just last week, our personnel managed to intercept contraband worth over Rs 4 crore from East Jaintia Hills in a single operation," he said, while lauding the ANTF's dedication and bravery in breaking the backbone of the supply chain. Meghalaya's geographical location, he added, has made it a lucrative transit point for drug syndicates, posing a constant challenge for enforcement agencies. Court grants anticipatory bail to YouTuber in Dharmasthala case

Last Updated: Mangaluru (Karnataka), Aug 21 (PTI) A Mangaluru court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to YouTuber Sameer MD, who is facing criminal charges over content related to the Dharmasthala case. A case was registered against him at the Dharmasthala police station under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 240 (giving false information) and 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the charges were linked to a video uploaded by Sameer, in which he made allegations connected to the controversial case. This is not the first time the YouTuber has faced legal action. In April, a Bengaluru court issued notice to him in connection with a Rs 10-crore defamation suit filed by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala representatives D Harshendra Kumar and Nischal D. The suit alleged that Sameer had deliberately targeted the religious institution by posting defamatory content about the unsolved 2008 murder of a college student. Sameer, who commands a sizeable online following, has often claimed that his work highlights issues ignored by mainstream media. Authorities, however, maintain that his recent content amounted to provocation and dissemination of misinformation, with the potential to disturb public order. Police sources said monitoring of digital content linked to sensitive cases would continue to prevent the spread of misinformation and unrest. The Special Investigation Team, formed by the state government, is probing allegations of multiple murders, rapes, and burials across different places in Dharmasthala over the past two decades. The investigation first began based on the complaint lodged by a former sanitation worker, whose identity has not been revealed.
