Rue got this: Perth MasterChef contestant Rue Mupedzi is feeling the fear and doing it anyway
Not only has she sailed through last week's Gordon Ramsay challenges, she also wowed guest judge Peter Gilmore with her incredible black forest dessert in last night's episode of the new Back To Win series, which gives 24 former contestants another crack at the MasterChef Australia title.
But though the 32-year-old might look self-assured on screen, Mupedzi, who runs cooking courses and caters privately for clients while juggling work as a dental hygienist, admits she still suffers from a bad case of nerves.
'Being back in the MasterChef Kitchen is amazing, but I'm not going to lie: there are always nerves around me,' says the Zimbabwean-born aspiring chef, who moved to Western Australia in 2009 aged 15.
'I have to say though, because I was in the winning team in the first cook, and I had a pretty decent dish in last night's episode, I feel like that is really reaffirming,' she explains.
'(It tells me) I am in the right place and I am just as deserving as these great people to be here.'
Mupedzi is best known for winning a challenge on her season of the show that saw her homemade barbecue sauce — or BarbeRue Sauce, as it was comically called — stocked in Coles supermarkets around the country.
'Do you know, I still get Instagram messages to this day saying 'When is your sauce coming back?',' she says proudly.
'I have to remind people: you can make it — (the recipe) is on 10Play!'
She says the experience of selling her sauce, plus her time on the series in 2023, was formative in deciding what course her life would take in the years since first appearing on the show.
'The (experience with the) sauce alone was phenomenal, but then I got to work in a pastry shop in Perth, called Whisked The Right Wei,' she explains.
'And I did quite a lot of private cheffing. I have now been all around Perth.
'(The show) also gave me confidence; the confidence to solo travel for five weeks in Vietnam and Thailand, where I did cooking classes — that was just before I went back to MasterChef.'
Before that phone call came, Mupedzi was back working in the dental surgery, raising funds to embark on an extended trip to France, where she planned to further her culinary skills with a course.
She's now reassessing what comes next.
'If I am to take the title of MasterChef Australia, this will really frustrate my trip to France,' she says. 'Because initially I wanted to do a culinary course — I'd already inquired and everything — and the thing was, the judges really reaffirmed to me that I don't really
need
to do a course because I already have the skills.
'If anything, I'm better off getting some work experience.'
And that's what she intends to do. But fans shouldn't be too worried — though Mupedzi plans to capitalise on her MasterChef opportunities, and still has plans to visit France, Perth will remain home.
'I will definitely stay in Perth, for sure, but (if I win) I will use that money to open a little dessert bar,' she says.
'I've always wanted to do a champagne and dessert bar, or a macaroon bar.
'I would definitely stay in Perth, but bring back that experience in France and establish something really unique here.'

Ashley Biden shared a photo of husband Howard Krein hand in hand with ‘his girlfriend' hours before bombshell divorce filing
Ashley Biden, the former first daughter who is fresh off filing for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, shared a picture purportedly showing her ex with another woman. 'My husband and his girlfriend holding hands,' the 44-year-old wrote in the Instagram Story, over a picture of a man and a woman taken from behind. She accompanied the story with the Notorious B.I.G. song 'Another,' featuring Lil' Kim, which details an affair. 'What do you do when your man is untrue? Do you cut the sucker off and find someone new?' Lil' Kim raps in the portion of the song Biden shared on social media. The dark-haired man in a casual short-sleeved shirt and the blond woman in a strapless black dress are not immediately identifiable, but Biden's message was clear. Sunday morning's Instagram Story — which was quickly taken down — came just hours before Biden filed for a divorce from the 58-year-old plastic surgeon in a Philadelphia court after 13 years of marriage. Another since-deleted Instagram Story, showing Biden walking through a park giving a thumbs-up to the tune of Beyonce's song 'Freedom,' also appeared to allude to the split. In a subsequent story accompanied by the Lauryn Hill song 'Freedom Time,' she reposted a quote, 'New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won't look or sound like they did before.' Former President Joe Biden's daughter is seeking spousal support from her ex as part of the divorce, court records seen by Radar Online show. Biden, executive director of the nonprofit Delaware Center for Justice, is 'unable to sustain herself' while the divorce is pending, according to the documents filed by her attorney Charles Meyer. She is requesting a no-fault divorce, claiming that the marriage is 'irretrievably broken,' and that the couple are living 'separate and apart,' the documents show. Biden and Krein did not respond to requests for comment Thursday. The couple married in 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, two years after meeting through Ashley's late brother, Beau, who died of cancer in 2015. Krein, a New Jersey-born otolaryngologist at Thomas Jefferson University, proposed in 2011 at Big Sur, California. They married at Delaware's St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in a ceremony combining her traditions with Krein's Jewish ones, before the couple and some 200 guests traveled to the Biden family's nearby lakeside home in Wilmington for a reception and dinner. Joe Biden, who was vice president at the time, personally prepped the house for his youngest child's wedding. 'I kept telling Ash, we've got to open up the church and practice walking up and down the aisle so I can handle it,' he previously told People. He was also full of praise for his future son-in-law, saying, 'This is the right guy. And he's getting a helluva woman.' Krein also served on the Biden Cancer Initiative's board of directors between 2017 and 2019, and advised his 2020 presidential campaign on its response to the COVID-19 pandemic in an unofficial capacity. At last year's DNC in Chicago, Ashley Biden recounted her wedding day and discussed her father's words to her before she tied the knot. 'Before he walked me down the aisle, he turned to me and said he would always be my best friend. All these years later, Dad, you are still my best friend,' she said in an address that brought her father to tears. Leonardo DiCaprio swept up in Ibiza stop-and-search drama as Travis Scott was reportedly denied entry
Leonardo DiCaprio and his entourage have been held up by Spanish police before entering an exclusive tequila event at a private villa, according to a video obtained by the Daily Mail. A woman in the background of the footage could be heard saying: ''They are searching me full-on right now.' It is not known if the woman speaking was DiCaprio's girlfriend, 27-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti, who was with him in Ibiza. But an insider told Page Six that the A-list actor wasn't singled out by police. A source told the outlet: 'Every single person was patted down and ID'd. 'The Spanish cops just didn't initially recognise DiCaprio. 'It's funny, they did a double-take and then he went in!' DiCaprio was seen dressed in an all-black outfit with his signature baseball cap and chain, and appeared absorbed in his phone while waiting for his turn to be searched. Other celebrities at the party included Kendall Jenner and DiCaprio's longtime friend Tobey Maguire, while Travis Scott was reportedly denied entry. DiCaprio has long been a regular visitor to Ibiza, returning repeatedly over the years for leisure and private events. Earlier in August, he and Ceretti were photographed boarding the mega yacht of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, also on the Spanish island. The couple had previously attended the couple's wedding in Venice, Italy, in June, during which Vittoria experienced a wardrobe malfunction in her vintage Dolce Gabbana dress. DiCaprio and the Italian-born model have been linked since the summer of 2023. She has spoken about the challenges of public perception in high-profile relationships. Ceretti told Vogue France in March: 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone who has a larger following than you, you become 'girlfriend of' – or 'boyfriend of,' for that matter. 'And that can be extremely annoying. 'Suddenly, people are talking about you as so-and-so's girlfriend who was so-and-so's ex. So it's not nice to think that you can't love whoever you want, because of the labels people need to stick on you.'
