Mikel Arteta reveals stance on Thomas Partey with his contract up this summer - and confirms position Arsenal 'NEED' to strengthen

Daily Mail22-05-2025

Mikel Arteta said he wants Thomas Partey to be rewarded with a new Arsenal contract after having his 'best' season at the club — but is keen to sign a 'goal threat' this summer.
The 31-year-old joined the Gunners in October 2020, with his contract expiring this summer.
He has made 34 league appearances this season — the most the Ghanaian has played in a single campaign.
Arteta said: 'We still have another Premier League match to play on Sunday and after that we have some time to sit down and finalise a few things that have to be done.
'In regards to Thomas, consistency-wise, it's been his best season. I think the way he's played, performed, his availability has been exceptional and he's a really important player for us.
'Yeah (I want him to stay).'
On the need to reinforce his squad, he said: 'What is clear with the amount of injuries that we had in the front line is that we need a goal threat and we need the firepower out there.
'Understanding that the context can change tomorrow, you know, and we cannot rely just on the numbers that we had before.
'And we have to add goals, we have to add creativity, we have to add numbers and that will be in different positions.'
Arteta also confirmed that Jurrien Timber underwent ankle surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be out for 'a while', while William Saliba is set to be sidelined for a 'few weeks'.
'Jurrien had surgery on Tuesday morning on his ankle,' he added.
'He's been feeling that discomfort for many, many weeks. He's been navigating through the season with that issue and it needed to be resolved, so he's going to be out for a while.
'And Saliba, he's had something in his hamstring the first half, just before half-time (against Newcastle), and again, he's going to be out for a few weeks.'

Matheus Cunha completes move to Manchester United on a five-year deal

United effectively completed the deal on June 1 after activating a £62.5million release clause in the 26-year old's contract. Cunha scored 31 goals in 76 appearances for Wolves after completing a permanent move from Atletico Madrid in 2023. Cunha said: 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. 'Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. 'I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. Mateus Cunha scored 31 goals in 76 appearances for Wolves (Nick Potts/PA) 'All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.' Cunha became Ruben Amorim's first summer signing on June 1 as the head coach sets about overhauling his squad after a miserable domestic campaign and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The striker helped his country qualify for the World Cup finals on Tuesday when he set up the only goal for Vinicius Jr. in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. United's director of football Jason Wilcox added: 'Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. 'He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.'

EXCLUSIVE My daughter's DNA carried a family secret so evil, I feared my life would be in danger if I told the truth... Even after I exposed her real father, my nightmare wasn't over: STACE DON

Skipping through the park with a ball under my arm, I tried to ignore my feelings of unease. Aged seven, I was forbidden from coming to the park on my own. If my parents spotted me, they'd be so disappointed. 'I'm off to play football,' I called to my friend, running over to the other side of the pitch.
