Dubai's DWC mega $35 billion airport moving forward with contract awards: Emirates Chairman

Gulf News29-04-2025
Dubai: Significant contracts have been awarded for work on Dubai's future mega-airport at Al Maktoum International (DWC), marking a crucial step forward in the development of the ambitious project, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group confirmed to Gulf News.
At a media interaction during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, provided updates on the planned transition of Emirates and other Dubai carriers to the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). He also discussed infrastructure development, the airline's fleet plans, market dynamics, and potential future orders.
Responding to a question about contracts awarded towards the building of the airport, Sheikh Ahmed said, "Yes, we did. I don't want to go into which contracts at this time, you know. I think it's more for our airport engineering to do that. Maybe they should really give you a brief at some time in the very near future what exactly they are doing. But work has started."
Describing the DWC project as immensely complex due to its scale, Sheikh Ahmed said the extensive stakeholder engagement underway involving Emirates, flydubai, dnata, regulators, and the more than 100 other airlines operating in Dubai. He stressed the crucial role of the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme and that staff training alone for the opening day might require around 12 months.
The goal, he said, is to make the transition "perfect as the day of the opening," confirming that contracts have been awarded. Work has started since the Dubai government gave the go-ahead to build the $35 billion passenger terminal almost over a year ago, confirmed Sheikh Ahmed.

Taqa secures Dh8.5 billion term loan to boost liquidity and advance growth strategy

Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), one of the largest listed integrated utilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, on Thursday announced it has secured an Dh8.5 billion corporate term loan facility. The facility is a two-year UAE dirham-denominated floating-rate loan, with a one-year extension option. Taqa intends to utilise the facility over time in a phased manner. Emirates NBD and First Abu Dhabi Bank were mandated by Taqa to act jointly as bookrunner, mandated leader arranger and coordinator while Mashreq acted as mandated lead arranger for the term loan facility. The use of dirham funding aligns with the group's dirham-based income profile and benefits from strong local liquidity, with Eibor offering a cost advantage over international benchmarks. The transaction enhances funding optionality, diversifies liquidity sources, and supports ongoing efforts to optimise the Group's capital structure and maintain the financial flexibility required to deliver on Taqa's long-term growth strategy. Jasim Husain Thabet, Taqa's group chief executive officer and managing director, said: 'Securing this facility marks another step in delivering on Taqa's long-term growth strategy, reinforcing our ability to maintain a strong and flexible balance sheet to support future investments. This facility demonstrates our ability to access competitive funding in our domestic currency, while retaining the ability to draw down in line with our capital and investment needs. The terms reflect the strength of our credit profile and the trust placed in us by our banking partners, ensuring we have the right financial foundations to continue delivering reliable and sustainable power and water to the communities we serve.' The facility offers Taqa greater financial flexibility compared to other available sources of funding, allowing drawdowns to be aligned with the Group's cash flow and investment schedule. The two-year tenor also aligns well with Taqa's maturity profile, as the group has no corporate debt maturities scheduled in 2027. This facility complements Taqa's existing corporate funding framework, which includes a $20 billion global medium term note (GMTN) programme and a $3.5 billion revolving credit facility. Together, these instruments provide the group with a well-balanced and diversified capital structure that supports both operational resilience and future growth. The facility also reinforces Taqa's financial readiness as it continues to execute on a strategic investment programme spanning domestic and international growth opportunities across power, water, and low-carbon energy.

ENEC launches Graduate Plant Operator Programme for Emirati engineers

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has launched the Graduate Plant Operator (GPO) Programme, designed to nurture the next generation of Emirati nuclear operations leaders, strengthening its commitment to investing in the next generation of Emirati nuclear professionals who will drive the nation's nuclear operations forward. The GPO Programme is open to high-achieving Emirati graduates with a bachelor's degree in engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, etc.). It offers a unique pathway to gain the comprehensive knowledge, hands-on experience, and operational expertise essential for a dynamic career in nuclear energy plant operations and management. Candidates will begin their journey with practical training as Local Operators at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, gaining an in-depth understanding of the plant's operational systems. After three years, successful operators will progress to Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) training, an essential leadership role responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and testing of plant systems. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, said, 'The Graduate Plant Operator Programme is a strategic investment in our national human capital. By empowering today's graduates, we are building the UAE's clean energy legacy; ensuring our plant operates to the highest national and international standards of safety, security, and efficiency. Nuclear energy not only plays a critical role in assuring energy security and sustainability, but given the life-cycle of nuclear plants, it has created an entirely new sector that offers high-value careers for at least the next 100 years ahead, providing job security for decades.' The GPO Programme is one of numerous education and training initiatives launched by ENEC since its inception to ensure a robust pipeline of skilled professionals dedicated to the safe and efficient operation of the Barakah Plant over its 60 years of operations and beyond. It complements ENEC's existing Graduate Development Programme (GDP), which offers 12 to 30 months of structured, workplace-based learning for Emirati graduates across technical and support functions critical to Barakah's operations. Admission criteria for both programmes are closely aligned. ENEC has empowered over one thousand Emirati talents through a range of programmes, including Scholarships, Train for Work, the Graduate Development Programme (GDP), the Diploma in Nuclear Technology (DNT), and the Internship. State-of-the-art facilities at Barakah have enabled the company to cultivate a team of over 70 Emirati SROs and ROs, who form the backbone of the plant's 190-strong SRO and RO workforce, highlighting the UAE's success in building a local nuclear workforce.
