Sleep Deprivation, No Bathroom Break: BSF Jawan Subjected To Mental Trauma In Pakistani Detention
Last Updated:
Purnam Shaw, BSF jawan who returned to India this week after three weeks of Pakistani detention, has been suffering from mental trauma ever since his return, sources said.
Ever since his return from Pakistan on May 14 after three weeks of detention, the Border Security Force jawan has been under trauma as he was subjected to mental torture during his captivity under Pakistan Rangers, government sources said on Friday.
Purnam Kumar Shaw, BSF personnel who inadvertently crossed the international border on April 23 and was detained by Pak Rangers, walked free back to India on Wednesday. This came four days after India and Pakistan reached an 'understanding" to halt military operations along the International Border and Line of Control on May 10.
According to sources, Shaw did not receive physical torture but was subjected to mental pressure in detention, such as denying bathroom breaks, sleep deprivation, among other inhuman acts.
'He was blindfolded on more than one occasion, and the fear of the unknown has also affected his mental health," sources said.
He was also repeatedly questioned about sensitive details related to national security, such as the deployment of the BSF on the border.
Sources said that his debriefing is still underway to bring him out of the mental trauma he became a victim of during those three weeks of captivity.
The BSF held numerous rounds of negotiations with the Pakistan Rangers ahead of his release via the Attari-Wagah border at 10.30 am on Wednesday.
The BSF officials were time and again given the same reply from Pakistan in every negotiation: 'We are waiting for directions from the higher-ups".
'Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols," officials said that day shortly after he crossed the border to step back into India.
His return raised cheers of happiness and sighs of relief in his family as they thanked the central and the West Bengal government for their efforts to safely bring him back to India.
His father, Bholanath Shaw, said that he wants Purnam to work for the country again.
'I want him to work for the country only. He will again go back to protect our country," he said.

Kerala Woman Who Conned 10 Men Into Marriage Had Fixed Schedule To Juggle Them All
Last Updated: Reshma once lived with a man from Kollam after marrying him, and they had a child. However, doubts over the child's paternity from his family later created serious tensions Reshma, a 30-year-old woman from Kerala at the centre of a bizarre case of serial deceit, managed to maintain cordial relationships with all ten of her husbands—despite marrying each under false pretences, police said. She allegedly told each man she was a schoolteacher posted in Bihar, using the claim to move between their homes without raising suspicion. Investigators added that she even followed a strict calling schedule to stay in regular contact with each of them. Police have contacted all of Reshma's husbands, but so far, none have filed complaints of theft or fraud. The Aryanad police are expected to seek her custody; Reshma is currently lodged at the Women Prison and Correctional Home in Attukulangara. Reshma, who is the mother of a two-year-old child, operated by contacting young men on online matrimonial sites, the report stated. She would tell them that she was an adopted daughter and that her adoptive mother was abusive and opposed to her marriage. Swayed by her 'emotional story,' the young men would offer to marry her and cover all wedding expenses. After a few days of marriage, she would leave, citing various reasons such as needing to retrieve education certificates from home, the report added. Reshma's first marriage occurred in 2014, with a native of Ernakulam, lasting until 2017. The fraudulent activities began thereafter, with Reshma marrying four more times by 2022. She married individuals from Thiruvananthapuram, Angamaly, Thodupuzha, and Valakam. Subsequently, she wed a Kollam native, with whom she lived for an extended period, resulting in the birth of a child. However, doubts regarding the child's paternity from the in-laws led to significant issues. Reshma's latest target was a panchayat member from the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram. This member organized all the wedding arrangements and scheduled it for June 6. Accordig to the report, Reshma arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on June 5 and stayed at a friend's house, who was associated with the panchayat member. On the day of her wedding to the panchayat member, she excused herself to take a bath but did not do so, raising suspicion. The fiancée's friend's wife notified the fiancée, leading to Reshma's bag being checked at a beauty parlour, where a previous marriage certificate was discovered, leading to her arrest. Reshma informed the police she was pursuing postgraduate and PhD studies in Sanskrit law. Reports indicate that Reshma had proposed marriage to two other young men for the upcoming weeks. '2,000 Deaths Each Year': 2023 PIL In Bombay HC Highlighted Mumbai Suburban Railway Accidents
Before the Mumbai train accident, a 2023 PIL flagged thousands of deaths on Mumbai's rail network, prompting Bombay High Court to say that passengers were treated like "cattle". A PIL, filed in 2023, had drawn the Bombay High Court's attention to deaths happening every year in the suburban railway. The PIL was accessed exclusively by CNN-News18, in the backdrop of the suburban train accident in Thane's Mumbra on Monday, in which four people lost their lives. According to the contents, the 2023 PIL stated that 2,000 deaths happen every year on the suburban railway. It also mentioned that 2,590 commuters had lost their lives in 2023, which meant an average of seven deaths per day. Nearly 2,441 people were injured during the same period. A total of 1,650 deaths were reported on the Central Railways, while another 940 deaths were reported on the Western Railways. More than 1,800 deaths were reported on Mumbai local trains, it stated. After the PIL was submitted, the Bombay High Court had pulled up the railways and had directed general managers to look into the 'very serious issue'. The High Court also said the human passengers are carried like 'cattle" on local trains and that the officers at the highest level should be made accountable. Meanwhile, the Central Railway's principal chief safety officer (PCSO) said they would probe the suburban train accident in Thane's Mumbra. It is being treated as an incident and not an accident, CR chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila told PTI. PCSO CK Prasad visited the site earlier in the day and carried out an inspection, he added. 'Relevant information is being collected, and efforts to identify the root cause are being made. The principal chief safety officer (PCSO) will conduct an inquiry into the incident that occurred around 9.10 am," he said. 'From preliminary investigation, it is found that the passengers were travelling on the footboard," Nila said. To avoid similar incidents in the future, all new locals will be introduced with an automatic door closure system, while existing trains will be retrofitted with it, Nila said. A railway team reached the spot at Mumbra station in the evening and took measurements of the gap between the two fast lines (Up and Down) tracks there, other officials said. As per Central Railway officers, eight passengers were found injured in the gap between two parallel railway tracks between Mumbra and Diwa railway stations in the morning, while five other passengers onboard the CSTM-bound Kasara-10 local sustained minor injuries. Railway officers said the Karjat-11 local from CSMT was crossing the Kasara-10 local at Mumbra when the incident took place. It was first reported by the train manager of a Kasara-CSMT train, officials said. Emergency response teams, including ambulances and railway medical staff, were immediately dispatched to the site, and the injured passengers were swiftly transported to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, and Civil Hospital, Thane, he said.

Under strict jail manuals, court allows 26/11 plotter Rana one phone call to family
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday granted permission for Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to speak to his family members via a one-time phone call. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh of the Patiala House Courts allowed the request under strict conditions. The call must follow the jail manual and will take place under the supervision of Tihar Jail authorities. The court also requested a fresh report on Rana's health, which must be submitted within 10 days. In addition, the judge directed jail authorities to file a report clarifying whether Rana should be allowed regular phone calls going forward. Rana, a 64-year-old businessman of Pakistani origin who holds Canadian citizenship, is currently in judicial custody. He was extradited to India after the US Supreme Court, on April 4, rejected his review plea against the extradition order. Rana is known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley (also known as Daood Gilani), the main conspirator behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and a US citizen. The Delhi Legal Services Authority appointed Advocate Piyush Sachdeva to represent Rana in the proceedings. According to the NIA, David Coleman Headley, the key conspirator, had shared details of the entire plan with Rana before coming to India. Expecting possible problems, Headley had also emailed Rana with information about his personal belongings and assets. The agency further claimed that Headley told Rana about the role of two Pakistani nationals, Ilyas Kashmiri and Abdur Rehman, who are also accused of being part of the plot. On November 26, 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists entered Mumbai by sea and carried out a deadly coordinated attack. They targeted a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre. The attack lasted nearly 60 hours and killed 166 people. The court has imposed stringent conditions on the custody of Rana, as the NIA had pressed forward with its explosive claim: that Rana may have conspired to orchestrate terror attacks in cities beyond Mumbai.
