
Nissan Micra reinvented as Renault 5 twin
Nissan's new Micra has finally been unveiled officially and returns after two years in the remaking. Now it is a much funkier design, aiming to appeal to younger buyers and equally to box sexes. Nissan doesn't want it to be seen as a 'grandma' car any longer. The styling should put paid to that.
Believe it or not, Micra is now 42 years old. In its new guise it is essentially a twin of the R5 thanks to its alliance with Renault. So no more ICE power for Micra.

Nissan has fared poorly in Europe of late, losing gobs of money. This new Micra is the beginning of a turnaround for the firm. It is one of four new EVs due before 2027 from the Japanese brand. The others are Leaf, Juke and a city car based on Renault's cute new Twingo.
The latest Micra uses the Ampr Small platform. It comes with a 40kWh (307km) or a 52kWh (405km) battery. The latter can hook up to 100kW fast chargers and rezip from 15-80 per cent in 30 minutes.
Power goes to a single, front-mounted motor. That comes in a 90kW version (with the 40kWh battery) or with 110kW (with the 52kWh battery).
Designed in step with the R5, Nissan opted for styling that was clearly Nissan. That's according to exterior design manager Yongwook Cho.
The new audacious and funky look takes inspiration from the Micra of 2002, particularly on account of its circular DRLs at both ends.
One change from the 5 is at the front, where the bonnet is higher, and longer. It also features bulkier arches to give the Micra a different silhouette from R5.
Cho said it imparts more of a crossover feel for Micra.
Another differentiator is at the rear, where there's a lip and at the side where there's a different shoulder line.
The interior is essentially the same as the R5's, with identical twin 10.25in screens. It also gets the same switchgear and materials but the white, grey and black colours are more muted.
Nissan wanted its Micra to be more premium than the R5, so pricing will likely start above the Renault's entry point.
The UK is Nissan's best European market and the firm wanted something inexpensive that appeals to young buyers, and a broader range of people. In Europe, Micra is essentially bought by women only so the new styling and more muted colours are likely to appeal to both sexes equally.
Nissan believes that total electrification for Micra will not limit its uptake and that it has a strong nameplate. Moreover, the arrival of the reinvented Leaf and the next-generation Juke, both electric, will help rejuvenate Nissan following a down period.
Arnaud Charpentier, a senior executive at Nissan believes: 'This new EV line-up will help us to come back in the race.'
Micra will sell in the EU market only, at least for now.

Lawson narrowly misses points in Spain
A frustrated Liam Lawson has narrowly finished outside the points at Formula One's Spanish Grand Prix, falling to an 11th place finish when the late cards didn't fall his way. World championship leader Oscar Piastri extended his lead with a front-running win, holding off team-mate Lando Norris in a McLaren one-two finish. New Zealand driver Lawson was 10th before his Racing Bulls team chose not to pit ahead of a late safety car stoppage, leaving him vulnerable to be passed by Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. It was a disheartening outcome for Lawson, who was coming off his first points of the season when placing eighth at last week's Monaco Grand Prix. He had driven solidly throughout the week at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before earning a 13th-placed start on the grid. "From our side, it was a very strong race," Lawson said. "Despite spending a lot of it in traffic, we had good speed and were overtaking cars, so it was working out. "We ended up in the wrong position and missed the safety car line by half a second because everyone in front of us boxed. "To be that close after all the work we did in the race is really unfortunate. As we look ahead to Canada, we'll take the positives of great race pace. Points are always the goal." Piastri wins again Polesitter Piastri won by 2.471 seconds to go 10 points clear of Norris with his fifth victory in nine races, and McLaren's seventh of the season. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium in a race that left the drama to the end with a late safety car deployment. "It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend," said Piastri, who finished third last weekend in a race won from pole by Norris. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was left on the brink of a ban after a clash with Mercedes' George Russell. Verstappen, who made four stops in total and ended up fighting on hard tyres against rivals with faster softs, collided with Leclerc and then twice with Russell after the safety car restart with six laps to go. Home hero Alonso scored his first points of the season in ninth for Aston Martin, who had only one car on the grid due to Lance Stroll's withdrawal through injury after Saturday's qualifying. Piastri led away at the start with Verstappen seizing second from Norris while Hamilton and Leclerc moved up to fourth and fifth as Russell lost out. Hamilton let Leclerc through on lap 10 of 66 after the two Ferraris had run nose to tail. Norris took back second place from Verstappen on lap 13, the Dutch driver making no attempt to defend against the quicker McLaren and pitting in the next lap for fresh tyres. Verstappen took the lead again on lap 23 after Piastri pitted, with Norris making his first stop on lap 21 and coming out behind the Red Bull, but that lasted only until Verstappen pitted for a second time on lap 30. He came in for a third stop on lap 47 but Norris pitted the lap after to defend second place. A safety car deployment on lap 55, after Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli beached his Mercedes in the gravel, bunched up the field and triggered a rash of stops. The McLarens came in together for fresh tyres, double-stacking, and resumed ahead of Verstappen who had only hards available to him. Nissan may sell its HQ to save funds
Amid a series of cost-cutting efforts (outlined here) in its fight for survival, Nissan may sell off its global headquarters. Following a massive loss reported for the last financial year the struggling Japanese automaker may sell off its Yokohama base. Located in the Minato-Mirai 21 district, the building is estimated to be worth over 100 billion yen ($NZ1.2b). Now Nikkei Asia reports the building appears on a list of assets Nissan intends to sell before the end of the financial year. The company's newly appointed CEO, Ivan Espinosa, has announced upcoming asset sales. However, he has not yet specifically mentioned Nissan HQ. If it does sell, it may lease the building instead. McLaren did a similar thing a few years ago. Some of Sunderland's spare capacity might be used by Chinese partner, Dongfeng. Nissan is embarking on a major cost-cutting scheme. It will likely close up to seven factories, including two domestic sites. The workforce will significantly downsize, with 20,000 jobs going in the coming years. Espinosa said that former management mishandled things by opting to go large in 2015. Nissan started building more plant and was aiming for sales of eight million units eventually. Now it is selling under half that annually. Nissan is also halting the development of certain models to cut costs. Six vehicle platforms will go, leaving just seven in the line-up. The company is also busy unifying more products and in doing so will reduce parts complexity by 70 percent. Nissan is also trying to determine how to survive on its own after a recent failed merger with Honda. Around 3000 R&D staff are now working on cost cutting initiatives. New Euro-only Micra is based heavily on Renault 5. Badge-engineered cars like the Micra/Renault 5 will help bring new models to market at a reduced cost. Nissan will also strengthen its partnership with Mitsubishi to accelerate the development of new products. It might even allow its Chinese partner, Dongfeng, to build cars at some of its underused factories, like Sunderland.
