Greenpeace slams Coca-Cola for producing billions of plastic bottles
Coca-Cola produces 120 billion throwaway plastic bottles a year, Greenpeace Africa said at a protest in South Africa Thursday, urging the soda maker to use glass and tin packaging to cut back on plastic pollution.

Coca-Cola has been the world's top plastic polluter for six consecutive years, the environmental activist group claimed.
"Coca-Cola produces 120 billion throwaway plastics every year. And most of it will end up in the environment and in the marine ecosystem," Greenpeace representative Hellen Kahaso Dena told AFP.

The company's claims to be promoting plastics recycling amounted to "greenwashing", she claimed. "We know that only about nine percent gets recycled. Most of the plastic will end up in the environment," Dena said.

that will prioritise a cap on plastic production.
Negotiations among delegates from nearly 200 nations for the world's first accord on cutting plastics pollution ended without agreement in South Korea last year after opposition from a bloc of mainly oil-producing countries.
A new round is due in Geneva in August.
Since the failure of the talks, Coca-Cola lowered its environmental commitments by effectively scrapping a pledge to reach 25 per cent reusable packaging by 2030, and pushing back dates and amounts for recycling goals.
Over 99 per cent of plastics derive from fossil fuels, directly linking plastic production to the climate crisis, Greenpeace said.

"The practice, however, did not last for long," he said. Kumar said it is for the state to decide how much administrative or financial power such a council can enjoy. "The industrial authorities, being autonomous, can retain core operations, but such a council could bring more public participation," Kumar, also a former chairman and CEO of Greater Noida (1998-2002), added. Between 1966 and 1990, Delhi metropolitan council had functioned as the deliberative wing of the Delhi administration, with positions such as leader of the house, leader of the opposition, whips, and presiding officers, but without full legislative powers. Alok Singh of Active Citizen Forum, residents have long been demanding representation on the Authority's board. "Citizens are never consulted on what the city needs. Instead, projects are imposed on us, many of which prove useless. Residents are connected to the ground and know the city's needs better." Since 2022, the forum has written to the Greater Noida Authority on several occasions seeking an authority-citizen committee and urged that the model be adopted by all industrial authorities in the state. Secret Service rushes to Alaska city for Trump-Putin talks
The call to Beau Disbrow was unlike any the Anchorage realtor had ever received. His short-term rentals typically house tourists bound for glaciers or business travellers passing through. This time, the request came from the US Secret Service. The Secret Service is still waiting for Russia to formally approve the full security plan.(AFP) 'Most of my short-term rentals were booked, but I did manage to put some of them into one home,' he said. It was not the last inquiry connected to the highly anticipated summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin set for Friday. Soon after the Secret Service call, the Russian consulate in New York phoned Disbrow with the same request. With no vacancies left, he referred the officials to a friend with furnished homes sitting empty. When Trump announced the Alaska meeting a week ago, the lone agent assigned to the Secret Service's post in the Last Frontier began preparing to host hundreds of reinforcements in the days ahead. The agency's mission was unusually complex: to protect both the American and Russian presidents at the same site, each surrounded by a heavily armed security detail. Four people familiar with the planning said the operation became an all-out sprint, compressed into a single week. Because the meeting is on American soil, the Secret Service can move weapons, communications equipment and medical gear without foreign restrictions. But the geography presents its own hurdles. Anchorage has limited hotel rooms and a small rental-car market, so vehicles and other assets are being flown in or driven from other parts of the state. Motorcade SUVs are arriving from the lower 48 on cargo planes. The summit will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska's largest military installation. A Cold War listening post less than a thousand miles from Russia, the base offers controlled airspace, fortified gates and instant access to military units — and, as an active base, is closed to the public. 'We're in the height of tourist season, so hotels are tight, cars are tight,' Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy said on Bloomberg Television on Thursday. 'Having this on the base alleviates a lot of issues.' While Anchorage has played host to the Pope and to former President Ronald Reagan in years past, the summit is 'one of the biggest things to happen' in the city, said Dunleavy, a Republican. State Department protocol is shaping much of the plan. In a bilateral meeting, officials said, reciprocity rules mean every courtesy extended to one leader must be matched for the other. Russian security will control Putin's immediate movements while the Secret Service maintains an outer ring. Neither side will open the other's doors or ride in the other's vehicles. If 10 US agents are posted outside a meeting room, 10 Russian agents will stand on the other side. Everything is matched body for body, gun for gun, one person said. That symmetry will extend from the arrival motorcade to the placement of translators in the room. Both sides will bring their own language teams. Even the number and size of hold rooms — secure waiting areas for each leader — are being negotiated. The Secret Service is still waiting for Russia to formally approve the full security plan, the people said. 'The safety of the President is our highest priority,' the Secret Service said in a statement. 'In order to maintain operational security, the Secret Service does not discuss the specific means and methods used to conduct our protective operations.' The Alaska deployment lands with the agency also protecting Vice President JD Vance in the United Kingdom, preparing for the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month and providing protection for former presidents Barack Obama, Joe Biden and George W. Bush and for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Twenty agents and officers have also been assigned this week to support Trump's federal takeover of the DC police department. Now, hundreds of agents have descended on Anchorage. Downtown hotels are full, and rental car lots have been cleared for convoys. Agents in suits and earpieces are posted at intersections, while others, in plain clothes, blend into coffee shops and parking garages. Alaska state troopers and local police are folded into motorcade routes that have been mapped down to the turn lane. Every movement of both leaders' vehicles is being choreographed to keep them apart while ensuring each is fully protected. Trump has described the 'feel-out' meeting as an effort toward ending Russia's war in Ukraine, suggesting a territorial swap could be part of a deal. Putin has sought to strengthen his rapport with Trump ahead of their summit, praising the US leader's efforts to broker an end to the war in Ukraine and dangling the promise of economic cooperation as well as a new arms control treaty.

Berkshire Hathaway revealed four new investments Thursday in steelmaker Nucor, insurer UnitedHealth and two of the nation's biggest homebuilders — Lennar and DR Horton — but it's not clear if the investments are big enough to ensure that legendary investor Warren Buffett handled them. Buffett, who plans to retire as CEO at the end of the year after six decades of building Berkshire, handles all of the conglomerate's biggest investments worth $1 billion or more. Three of the new investments disclosed Thursday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission are worth less than that, so they could be the ideas of one of Berkshire's two other investment managers. But Berkshire's new UnitedHealth stake that was also revealed Thursday was worth $1.57 billion, so that one could be big enough to be Buffett's handiwork. Berkshire got permission from the SEC to keep the other three investments confidential earlier this year while it built those stakes, but it apparently bought nearly 5 million UnitedHealth shares just in the second quarter. That stock jumped nearly 8% in aftermarket trading. Berkshire's filings simply offer a snapshot of its $258 billion portfolio at the end of the second quarters. Many investors comb through Berkshire's filings every quarter because they like to follow Buffett's moves. His record of trouncing the S&P 500 for decades has inspired legions of followers. The filing doesn't make clear who at Berkshire handled each investment. Besides Buffett, Ted Weschler and Todd Combs also pick stocks, but they generally handle smaller portfolios and Combs also serves as Geico's CEO. But Buffett has had a hard time finding stocks or any other investments in recent years that he wants to invest much of Berkshire's $344 billion cash in. Berkshire's Nucor stake of 6.6 million shares was the biggest new investment worth roughly $857 million at the end of the quarter. Shares of that company rose more than 6% in extended after-hours trading. The Lennar investment was worth nearly $800 million. While the DR Horton stake was much smaller worth $191.5 million. Those companies' stocks also saw gains in late trading Buffett already knows quite a lot about the home building business because Berkshire owns the nation's largest manufactured homebuilder, Clayton Homes. Besides stocks, Berkshire owns dozens of companies in a variety of industries including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, several major utilities and an assortment of manufacturing and retail companies. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company's holdings include many well-known brands like See's Candy and Dairy Queen.
