Citing a Forensic Science Laboratory report, police reiterated before the sessions court their earlier claim knife fragments that got lodged near the actor's spine during the attack as well as a part found at the crime spot have matched with the weapon recovered from the accused, Shariful Islam.
These three pieces were part of the same weapon (knife) used to attack the filmstar, the police said in a written response to the accused's plea submitted in the court on Thursday (July 24). Khan was repeatedly stabbed with a knife by an intruder inside his 12th floor apartment in upscale Bandra on January 16 during a robbery attempt.
'There was a possibility that he may flee India'
The 54-year-old actor underwent surgery at Lilavati Hospital to remove a piece of knife that got lodged near his spine during the attack. He was discharged from the private hospital after five days. Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested two days later for allegedly stabbing Khan. The police, in their response, highlighted that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen residing illegally in India. If granted bail, there was a possibility that he may flee India and not appear before the court during the trial.
The crime committed by the accused is of a "very serious nature, and strong evidence" is available against him, they argued. In his bail plea, filed through advocate Vipul Dushing, the accused asserted he was innocent and had no prior criminal record.
Investigation into the case has practically concluded with only the filing of a chargesheet pending, the accused contended while seeking bail. The alleged attacker has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to house trespass, robbery and dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous injury.

Agreeing with the police's contention that a job in a government mint is a highly sensitive position, a sessions court recently rejected the anticipatory bail application of two employees booked for allegedly using dummy candidates to appear for an online exam for the job. The court was told that departmental inquiry is ongoing against the two and at least five others after it came to light that their photographs of the persons who appeared in the online exam did not match the accused persons, who work at the government mint. The MRA Marg police station of the Mumbai Police had filed an FIR on allegations of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University Board and other Specified Examination, Act. Lokendra Kumar and Aditya Kumar — both residents of Uttar Pradesh — sought anticipatory bail, stating that they are innocent and there is no material to prove that they were involved in such an offence. They also submitted that since a departmental inquiry is already ongoing, their custodial interrogation by the police is not required. Police opposed their pleas stating that the mint is a very important office where coins, commemorative coins, medals, and medallions are produced and gold stocks are held. Police sought to probe whether those named are involved in any espionage and who helped them secure the job. It is suspected that the candidates were involved in the exams given from 2019-2023. 'By perusing the application and the prosecution's say, departmental inquiry is going on against the applicant. It is also alleged that the photograph provided at the time of the examination does not match the actual photograph…,' additional sessions judge, Avinash Kulkarni said in the order, rejecting the pre-arrest bail pleas of both the men, on July 19, which was made available on July 21. 'Accordingly, it is alleged that a bogus person appeared for the examination using applicant's Aadhaar card and other identity documents. The position in question is admitted to be highly sensitive,' the order added. The anticipatory bail pleas of two others are pending. The case relates to a complaint from the Human Resources office of the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India. Police said that after CCTV footage of one of the exams revealed that a person who appeared did not match the photograph of the candidate, a probe was conducted into the recruitment held for the posts of junior assistants and other technical posts and a departmental inquiry was ordered against seven.

Bihar gangster wanted for murder killed in police encounter in UPs Hapur
Hapur/Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The deceased has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added. UP Police constable's wife dies by suicide, posts Instagram video accusing in-laws of harassment
The wife of a police constable in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow died by suicide on Sunday by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence. The incident came to light after she posted an Instagram video alleging harassment by her in-laws, news agency PTI reported, citing police. The police said they have notified the woman's family, who have left their home in Mainpuri to come to Lucknow. 'On Sunday, it was learnt through an Instagram video that the woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in the house. She is the wife of a constable, who is currently posted in Eagle Mobile at Bakshi Ka Talab station,' the police said in a statement, PTI reported. In the video shared before her death, the woman accused her in-laws of trying to get her husband remarried and claimed her brother-in-law had threatened to kill her, the statement added. The police said they have notified the woman's family, who have left their home in Mainpuri to come to Lucknow. 'On receipt of their complaint, a case will be registered and necessary action will be taken,' the statement said. Pune man arrested after wife dies by suicide In a separate incident, a 26-year-old woman allegedly took her own life by hanging herself at her home in Maharashtra's Pune after which her husband has been arrested, and her in-laws have been booked in connection with a dowry harassment case, police said on July 22. The incident occurred on July 18. The accused has been identified as Ashish Deepak Dhamodar, 32, the deceased woman's husband, who runs a badminton academy in Moshi. The police have also named Ashish's parents – Sunanda Deepak Dhamodar and Deepak Tukaram Dhamodar – in the case. According to the complaint lodged by Sanjay Dod, 58, from Akola district, his daughter was allegedly subjected to harassment and mental torture over dowry demands. Police said the woman's in-laws had demanded ₹5 lakh and a two-wheeler from her family. Her relatives have also alleged that Ashish regularly abused and tormented her, which ultimately led to her death by suicide. The deceased, who was the mother of a one-and-a-half-year-old child, reportedly ended her life on the day of Ashish's birthday. An argument erupted between the couple during a cake-cutting celebration. Following the dispute, the woman locked herself in a room and hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Her husband and others broke open the door and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. Ganesh Jamdar, SPI at MIDC Bhosari Police Station, said, 'As per the complaint filed by the father of the woman, we have registered an FIR against her husband and others and arrested the husband. Further investigation is going on.' The case has been registered under BNS sections 80, 115(2), 351(2), 352, and 3(5), and further inquiries are underway. Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable.
