China calls for joint patrols on Afghan border and urges Taliban to help fight terrorism
Afghanistan, including joint patrols along the narrow strip of land that forms their only shared border.
'China supports the prompt resumption of bilateral patrols in the Wakhan Corridor to maintain peace and stability in the border region,' Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a meeting with the Afghan acting minister of interior affairs, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
The
Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of mountainous Afghan territory that divides Tajikistan and Pakistan, including Pakistani-held parts of Kashmir, and includes a 74km (46-mile) border with China's Xinjiang region.
Beijing has repeatedly voiced concerns that Uygur militants could cross from Afghanistan into Xinjiang through that route.
On Wednesday, on his first trip to the country since March 2022, Wang called on the Taliban government to combat terrorist groups such as the
East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) , a Uygur separatist group.
'We hope the Afghan side will continue to do its utmost to combat the ETIM terrorist forces, clearing obstacles and injecting momentum into the in-depth development of China-Afghanistan relations,' he told acting Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Wang, on a five-day tour of South Asia, has visited India and Afghanistan, consolidating ties with China's neighbours to the south days before a leaders' summit in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Iran. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to China - his first visit in seven years - to attend the summit. At a press briefing on Thursday, Wang also welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend both the summit and activities to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, which will feature a massive military parade in Beijing. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the parade in the capital on September 3. During Thursday's meeting with Dar, Wang said the ironclad friendship between China and Pakistan stands the test of time, and that the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership is unbreakable. He also urged Pakistan to "effectively safeguard the safety of Chinese personnel, projects and organisations in Pakistan". Over the years China has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure projects in Pakistan under the Belt and Road Initiative. But security concerns have mounted, with Chinese workers repeatedly targeted in what Beijing has called terrorist attacks in the South Asian nation. Beijing ‘stands firm' with New Delhi against ‘bully' US, Chinese envoy says

China warns US over military build-up as warships head towards Venezuela
As US destroyers closed in on Venezuela's coast on Thursday, China condemned Washington's military build-up and warned against foreign interference, backing Nicolas Maduro in a showdown that is drawing in powers far beyond the Caribbean. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China opposed 'any move that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and a country's sovereignty and security'.
