China calls for joint patrols on Afghan border and urges Taliban to help fight terrorism
Afghanistan, including joint patrols along the narrow strip of land that forms their only shared border.
'China supports the prompt resumption of bilateral patrols in the Wakhan Corridor to maintain peace and stability in the border region,' Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a meeting with the Afghan acting minister of interior affairs, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
The
Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of mountainous Afghan territory that divides Tajikistan and Pakistan, including Pakistani-held parts of Kashmir, and includes a 74km (46-mile) border with China's Xinjiang region.
Beijing has repeatedly voiced concerns that Uygur militants could cross from Afghanistan into Xinjiang through that route.
On Wednesday, on his first trip to the country since March 2022, Wang called on the Taliban government to combat terrorist groups such as the
East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) , a Uygur separatist group.
'We hope the Afghan side will continue to do its utmost to combat the ETIM terrorist forces, clearing obstacles and injecting momentum into the in-depth development of China-Afghanistan relations,' he told acting Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

China to deepen 'all-weather' friendship with Pakistan
China to deepen 'all-weather' friendship with Pakistan Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar that China's ironclad friendship with Pakistan stands the test of time. Photo: Xinhua China is willing to cooperate with Pakistan in industry, agriculture and mining, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar in Islamabad on Thursday, according to a readout of the meeting released by the Foreign Ministry. Beijing would continue to support Pakistan in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and combating terrorism, Wang told Dar, adding that China would continue to give priority to Pakistan in its regional diplomacy. Both countries should join hands to safeguard the multilateral trading system and oppose unilateral bullying, and upgrade the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, he said. Wang, on a five-day tour of South Asia, has visited India and Afghanistan, consolidating ties with China's neighbours to the south days before a leaders' summit in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Iran. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to China - his first visit in seven years - to attend the summit. At a press briefing on Thursday, Wang also welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend both the summit and activities to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, which will feature a massive military parade in Beijing. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the parade in the capital on September 3. During Thursday's meeting with Dar, Wang said the ironclad friendship between China and Pakistan stands the test of time, and that the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership is unbreakable. He also urged Pakistan to "effectively safeguard the safety of Chinese personnel, projects and organisations in Pakistan". Over the years China has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure projects in Pakistan under the Belt and Road Initiative. But security concerns have mounted, with Chinese workers repeatedly targeted in what Beijing has called terrorist attacks in the South Asian nation. "China appreciates Pakistan's unremitting efforts and great sacrifices made in combating terrorism," Wang said. (Reuters/Xinhua)

Beijing ‘stands firm' with New Delhi against ‘bully' US, Chinese envoy says
Beijing's top envoy in New Delhi on Thursday expressed strong support for India, citing the steep US tariffs imposed against the country, and called for 'teamwork' and 'collaboration' between the world's two most populous nations in standing up to the 'bully'. 'US imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on India. China firmly opposes it. Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India, uphold the multilateral trading system,' Ambassador Xu Feihong said. He said tariffs and trade wars are undermining the very free trade international system the US once benefited from, and accused Washington of wielding tariffs as a 'bargaining chip to demand exorbitant prices from various countries.' He made the remarks at the SCO Summit 2025: Resetting India-China Ties, organised by the Chintan Research Foundation, a New Delhi think tank. The rare show of solidarity comes against the backdrop of a turbulent global trade environment amid US President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policies targeting both countries. Peter Navarro, a White House senior trade adviser, on Thursday slammed India as 'maharaja' of tariffs that has begun 'cozying up' to President Xi Jinping.

China warns US over military build-up as warships head towards Venezuela
As US destroyers closed in on Venezuela's coast on Thursday, China condemned Washington's military build-up and warned against foreign interference, backing Nicolas Maduro in a showdown that is drawing in powers far beyond the Caribbean. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China opposed 'any move that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and a country's sovereignty and security'. She added that Beijing rejected 'the interference of external forces in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext' and urged the United States to 'do more things conducive to peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region'. Her remarks came as Maduro hosted China's ambassador in Caracas, Lan Hu, praising what he called 'notable advances' in joint projects. 'China is without a doubt the country that leads the world with the concept of human development,' Maduro said in a message on Telegram after the meeting, which was also attended by Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez.
