New Instagram features explained including one which may worry parents
Social media platform Instagram has updated its features to include three new elements that fans have long been asking for. People with Instagram accounts will now be able to 'repost' their friends' pictures and Reels (the video section of the app), as well as see each others' locations through the new Instagram Map.
Meta, Mark Zuckerberg's company that owns Instagram, announced the news on their website yesterday, August 6. As well as adding in a repost feature, users will now be able to share their location through Instagram Map, similar to rival social media platform Snapchat's SnapMap.
But this particular new feature could worry parents whose kids or teens use the app.
The company said on its website: "Today, we're launching several new ways to help you better connect with your friends on Instagram. People have always come to Instagram to share what they're up to and where they are.
"Now, with reposts, the map, and the 'Friends' tab in Reels, it's easier for you and your friends to stay in touch through the content you're enjoying on Instagram."
But what exactly are these new features, and should parents be worried? Here's a rundown of all Instagram's newly added elements and how to use them.
What are the new Instagram features?
Reposting pictures and Reels
With the new update, users can repost public Reels and posts, which Instagram says makes it easier to share interests with friends.
This new repost feature will also appear as a separate tab on the app, so users can easily go back and revisit the content they have reposted in the past.
Reposts are credited to the original poster. For creators, this means that when their content is reposted by someone else, it may be recommended to that person's followers, even if they don't follow the creator directly.
This gives creators an opportunity to reach even more people, Instagram says.
Sharing location with the Instagram Map
Users have the option to opt in to sharing their last active location with friends of their choice, and they are able to turn off the feature at anytime.
Those who have the location feature turned on can also open the map to see content their friends and favourite creators are posting from interesting or fun locations.
Instagram says: "No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other."
But while this feature may spark concern in parents whose kids or teens use the app, Instagram is assuring that their new map has strict controls which parents can access.
They said: "If you're a parent with supervision set up for your teen, you have control over their location sharing experience on the map.
"You will receive a notification if your teen starts sharing their location, giving you the opportunity to have important conversations about how to safely share with friends.
"You can decide whether your teen has access to location sharing on the map and see who your teen is sharing their location with."
To set up supervision for your teen's account, Instagram has a step-by-step guide on its website.
New 'Friends' tab in Reels
The new 'Friends' tab in Reels allows users to see the content their friends and peers have liked, created, reposted or commented on, and easily start conversations about them.
Instagram concluded: "Friends will help you see which reels the people you care about most are creating and engaging with. We started rolling Friends out earlier this year, and are now excited to launch it globally."

It comes after the mum-of-two reconciled with her partner of 12-years Azuka Ononye after a 'really rocky patch' left their relationship on the brink. This March Alesha confirmed the pair had split but said they were living together for the sake of their children. A month later, those close to the couple confirmed they were giving their romance another try. A close source said: 'They went through a really rocky patch and decided to call it a day. It had been difficult for a long time and Alesha just couldn't see a way forward. 'AZ even moved out to a hotel for a while, despite the fact they were co-parenting. 'But there is still a huge amount of feeling between them. They've been together for 12 years and have two beautiful children. 'So they have decided to give it one last try. "They both desperately want to be a family again and are going to do all it takes to make it work.' Alesha is also ready to revisit her Mis-Teeq days as she teased a fresh chapter for the super-cool girlband. Asked her if there were "any advances" on a previous comeback chat, she replied: "There might be. "Thinking doesn't mean we are doing, we're thinking. "Which is more than we've done." BAND HISTORY Mis-Teeq started life as a four piece in 1999, but Zena McNally left two years later. Last year, Zena - now known as Zena Whitter - took radiant pics online for her 25,000 Instagram followers who gushed over her ageless look. Mis-Teeq formed in 1999 when Alesha met singer Sabrina a few years earlier at their dance school, Dance Attic, in Fulham, London. At the time, Hammersmith-born singer Tina Bartlett joined Alesha and Sabrina to perform and write music as a trio called Face2Face. However, after a successful audition with another upcoming pop group, Tina jumped ship to became a member of 90s and 00s pop sensations S Club 7. This fuelled Alesha and Sabrina, who promptly replaced Tina with Dulwich singer Su-Elise, who the duo spotted as she auditioned for another group. The final member added to the group would be Zena, who joined in 1999. The group signed to Telstar Records the following year and began working with an array of producers to form their debut album. Mis-Teeq's debut single, Why?, was released in January 2001 and reached number 8 in the UK Singles chart that year. The noughties group went on to have six more consecutive top-10 singles and two top-ten albums across US, Europe, Asia and Australia, including their double platinum second album Eye Candy which was released in March 2003. 6 Mis-teeq were a huge part of the UK pop scene between 2001 and 2005 Credit: Getty Images - Getty 6 Alesha went on to find success as a solo artist Credit: Getty

Ex Celtic striker joins Conor McGregor's pub team as Matt O'Riley Hoops love affair continues
O'Riley quit Parkhead for Brighton last summer but still keeps close tabs on his former club Former Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has made a shock return to football by signing for Conor McGregor's pub team. Stokes, 37, has been out of the game since 2020 when he quit Livingston after less than three weeks - blaming Livi's artificial pitch. Since then, ex-Republic of Ireland international has had numerous run-ins with the law and recently avoided jail on appeal for drug dealing and drunk and dangerous driving. But five years since his last professional appearance, former Hibs star Stokes will pull the boots back on for amateur side Black Forge FC. Journeyman Stokes shared the news of the transfer on Instagram, writing: "Better get the dust knocked off the boots." The Dublin-based outfit are owned by former UFC fighter McGregor - who has also pulled on the Black Forge FC shirt. Meanwhile ex- Celtic Treble-winner Matt O'Riley insists the Glasgow club will always hold a special place in his heart. The midfielder spent a trophy-laden two-and-a-half years in Scotland following his bargain £1.5m switch from MK Dons before landing a £25m switch to Brighton last summer. O'Riley - who was linked with Italian champions Napoli last month - endured an injury-hit debut campaign in the Premier League. But the Denmark international is determined to prove his worth for the Seagulls this season. And he revealed he still keeps close tabs on Celtic. He told the Celtic Way:"I still follow all the games. Even though I don't post that much on social media, I'm still watching every single game and trying to keep tabs on them. "I'm still in contact with people. It's hard in football to keep contact with everybody because it moves so fast and things change. "But I did make some good friends up there, and I'm still in contact with a lot of staff at Celtic, which has been nice."
