Hot and humid conditions expected in Kuwait through Saturday

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 21: Kuwait will experience hot daytime temperatures and warm to hot nights over the weekend, the country's meteorological department said Wednesday, as an extension of the Indian monsoon low brings a hot and humid air mass to the region. Dharar Al-Ali, director of the meteorological department, told KUNA that northwesterly to variable winds, light to moderate in speed, will prevail across the country. On Thursday, coastal areas will see hot and humid conditions, with winds ranging between 8 and 30 kilometers per hour. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 44 to 46 degrees Celsius. The sea will be light to moderate, with waves between 1 and 4 feet. Overnight Thursday, temperatures will drop slightly to 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, with hot and humid conditions continuing in coastal regions. Variable northwesterly winds will maintain light to moderate speeds, and sea conditions will remain light to moderate with waves of 1 to 4 feet. Friday will see hot and relatively humid weather in coastal areas, with winds between 8 and 28 kilometers per hour. Maximum temperatures are forecast at 44 to 46 degrees Celsius, while the sea will remain light to moderate with waves ranging from 1 to 3 feet. Nighttime temperatures will range between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, accompanied by light to moderate variable northwesterly winds and similar sea conditions. Saturday is expected to be very hot, with northwesterly to variable winds at 8 to 28 kilometers per hour and maximum temperatures reaching 45 to 47 degrees Celsius. The sea will remain light to moderate, with waves between 1 and 3 feet. Saturday night will see temperatures ranging from 29 to 31 degrees Celsius, with northwesterly winds of light to moderate intensity and sea waves of 1 to 4 feet. Al-Ali emphasized that the ongoing Indian monsoon depression, combined with the hot and humid air mass, will dominate Kuwait's weather over the coming days.

Dangerous heat descends on California and the Southwest, raising wildfire risk

LOS ANGELES, Aug 20, (AP): A dangerous heat wave descended on much of California and the U.S. Southwest, with triple-digit temperatures expected along with a higher risk of wildfires. Officials opened cooling centers this week in Los Angeles, where residents are warned to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered state firefighting resources deployed in areas where blazes could ignite. The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for Southern California starting Wednesday into the weekend. If outdoor activities can't be avoided, forecasters say, they should be moved to early morning hours. And everyone should hydrate. Downtown Los Angeles was forecast to reach 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius), while valleys to the north braced for temperatures as high as 108 F (42 C). It will be several degrees hotter in desert areas. Candice Catlett, who uses a wheelchair, rolled herself toward some shade as temperatures started spiking Tuesday in downtown LA. "It's sizzling hot out here,' Catlett said. "I have sunblock. Hopefully, I can find some cold water. I'm trying to stay out of the direct sun.' Further north, nearly-always-hot Death Valley could see a severe 120 F (49 C), the weather service said. In Arizona, the peak of the heat wave will hit Thursday and Friday, with the mercury possibly reaching 110 F (43 C) in the southern and western parts of the state. Similar temperatures were likely in Las Vegas. Red flag warnings, signaling elevated wildfire danger, have been issued across Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties until Saturday. "If you live in a high fire danger area in the mountains or foothills, review your evacuation plans and route and stay tuned to your local emergency officials,' the weather service said in a statement. The state has sent 10 fire engines and multiple firefighting teams to LA County to assist local agencies if blazes break out. "By prepositioning firefighting crews, equipment, and other resources in high-risk areas, we can respond faster and more effectively when needed," said Nancy Ward, director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. In the Sierra Nevada, higher than normal temperatures, low humidity and the possibility of lightning storms will contribute to the fire risk. California's largest blaze this year, the Gifford Fire, reached 95% containment Tuesday after charring nearly 206 square miles (534 square kilometers) of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties since erupting on Aug. 1. The cause is under investigation.

Record Spanish wildfires close part of Camino de Santiago

Defence minister attributes fires to climate change, heat wave ASTORGA, Spain: Spain's worst wave of wildfires on record spread to the southern slopes of the Picos de Europa mountains on Monday and prompted authorities to close part of the popular Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. 'This is a fire situation we haven't experienced in 20 years,' Defence Minister Margarita Robles told Cadena SER radio. 'The fires have special characteristics as a result of climate change and this huge heat wave,' she said. The heatwave spanning 16 days is the third-longest on record and sent temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) over the weekend, according to state weather agency Aemet. It is expected to start easing on Monday evening or Tuesday. Southern Europe is experiencing one of its worst wildfire seasons in two decades, with Spain and Portugal among the hardest-hit countries. So far this year, an estimated 344,400 hectares (851,000 acres) have burned in Spain - an area equivalent to the size of the island of Mallorca - according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). It's the largest area on records that go back to 2006 and more than four times the 2006-2024 average. A firefighter died when his truck crashed near the village of Espinoso de Compludo, raising the death toll to four from the recent wave of fires. In Portugal, wildfires have burned about 216,200 hectares so far this year, according to EFFIS - more than four times the 2006-2024 average for this period - and two people have died. The Spanish army has deployed 3,000 troops and 50 aircraft to help firefighters, emergency services general director Virginia Barcones said. Spain is also receiving or has been offered help from France, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany and the Czech Republic through the European Civil Protection mechanism, according to the Interior Ministry. In the past week alone, about 20 wildfires have devastated thousands of hectares in the regions of Galicia and Castile and Leon, forcing authorities to cut rail services in the area, as well as a 50-km (30-mile) stretch of the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage path trodden by thousands in the summer. It links France and the city of Santiago de Compostela on the western tip of Spain, where the remains of the apostle St James are said to be buried. 'Terrible thing' Patrice Lepettre, a 75-year-old pilgrim in Astorga, told Reuters the inconvenience for hikers was temporary and could not be compared to the locals' plight. 'It's a terrible thing for the population. The pilgrims can go back home and come another year to finish the Camino, but for the people who live here, it's a terrible thing,' he said. Leaders of regions run by the main opposition People's Party (PP) have criticized the central government for poor planning and asked for more resources to fight the wildfires. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Sunday urged a 'state pact' on climate change with all main political forces, which was dismissed as a 'diversion' by PP spokesperson Ester Munoz on Monday. The Interior ministry said 27 people have been arrested and 92 were under investigation for suspected arson since June. In Palacios de Jamuz in the northern region of Castile and Leon, where a wildfire had burned down whole rows of houses, Delia Lobato was inspecting the damage and lamented the deaths of people and trees. 'Such young people who had their whole lives ahead and who are gone, that's the hardest thing,' she said. 'We will plant again, and if I don't see it grow well my children will.' — Reuters
