‘False and misleading': EC dismisses Rahul Gandhi's claims on voter roll discrepancies
The Election Commission on Wednesday dismissed as ' false and misleading ' Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations of discrepancies in the electoral roll of an Assembly constituency in Karnataka. In a social media post on Wednesday, the poll body said that any correction, deletion or inclusion in the electoral roll can only be made as per the procedure laid down in law, and that no one can 'force' the removal of a person's name without following due process. 'If any such person actually believes in any of his analysis and allegations of wrongful inclusion of any names, there should be no problem for him in sharing such evidence with the ERO [electoral registration officer] along with the signed declaration and oath [under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960],' it said. On August 7, Gandhi said that his party had spent six months examining the electoral rolls in Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency and found discrepancies in more than one lakh names. He alleged that this was evidence of the Election Commission having colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Gandhi claimed that the electoral rolls included 11,965 duplicate entries, 40,009 voters with fake or invalid addresses, 10,454 'bulk voters' registered in a single address, 4,132 voters with invalid photographs and 33,692 voters in whose cases there had allegedly been misuse of Form 6. The Election Commission's Form 6 is an application document for registering new voters. The poll panel said on Wednesday that if someone who is not an elector in a constituency alleges wrongful inclusion of a person's name, they can only do so by filing an application before the electoral registration officer, who will administer an oath under the rules. Commenting on the Election Commission's demand, Gandhi said on August 8 that he had taken oath as a member of Parliament, and asked why the poll panel wanted him to make his allegations of 'vote theft' on oath.

Using ‘dirty phrases' like ‘vote chori' is an attack on electors, election staff: EC
With the Opposition alleging discrepancies in electoral rolls in the country, and the Congress campaign against 'vote chori', the Election Commission of India said Thursday using such phrases was not only an attack on the electors, but also on the integrity of lakhs of poll workers. In a statement, the poll body said: 'If anyone has any proof of any person actually voting twice in any election, it should be shared with ECI with a written affidavit rather than colouring all the electors of India as 'chor' without any proof'. 'Trying to create a false narrative by using dirty phrases like 'Vote Chori' for our electors, is not only a direct attack on the crores of Indian electors but also an assault on the integrity of lakhs of election staff.' It added that the principle of one person one vote had existed since the first general elections held in 1951-192. The EC's statement comes after Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, on August 7, presented findings of the Congress's study of the electoral rolls of the Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency. Giving details of the alleged 'vote chori', Gandhi said at the press conference that over 1 lakh votes had been 'stolen' using duplicate voters, false and invalid addresses, bulk voters in a single address, invalid photos and misuse of the registration form for new electors, the Form 6. In response, the EC termed the allegations misleading and, through the office of the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer, sought a written affidavit with the details of the allegations. Since then, the Congress and other Opposition parties have made more allegations regarding discrepancies in electoral rolls in other states as well. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), too, has levelled allegations about Gandhi's constituency of Rae Bareli, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's Diamond Harbour seat, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's Kannauj constituency. At a press conference on Wednesday, BJP MP Anurag Thakur said there were 2.69 lakh doubtful voters in Rae Bareli.

SEC releases final photo electoral rolls for BTC polls
Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday released the final photo electoral rolls with a total electorate of 26,58,477 for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, likely to be held by the end of September, as hinted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier. The rolls cover all 40 constituencies across the five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) — Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang, and Tamulpur. The rolls include 81 newly added villages, following a delimitation exercise undertaken by the state govt. Of the total voters, 13,23,673 are men, 13,34,787 are women, and 17 belong to the third gender. A total of 3,279 polling stations have been proposed, though this number is subject to change. The final list of polling stations will be published on August 18, after rationalisation is completed. Voters can verify their names using their EPIC number or by downloading details from the citizen corner on the SEC's website. To boost voter participation, the state commission has announced that claims for enrolment will be accepted until the last date of nomination filing, provided the applicants are eligible under the ECI's current summary revision and are listed in the supplementary roll with a valid EPIC.
