Hellebuyck had 81 first-place votes to runner-up Leon Draisaitl's 53, as tabulated by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, though he surely would've swapped places with the Edmonton Oilers centre starring in the Stanley Cup final. His victories represented just under 84% of the Jets' 56 wins, though after the voting he had road game hiccups in Winnipeg's two playoff series.
Winger Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning, winner of the Ted Lindsay Award as the MVP voted on by players, edged Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon for third place.
'I saw someone in my yard and was confused,' Hellebuyck said with a laugh. 'That moment (when the Hart appeared) was like putting a cherry on top. I had no idea what the Hart looked like.

Leon Draisaitl gets the overtime winner but Calvin Pickard is the Game 4 hero as Oilers even Stanley Cup final

Leon Draisaitl got to the winner, but it was Calvin Pickard who had the save. Draisaitl's backhand pass to Corey Perry deflected off Florida defenceman Niko Mikkola to surprise Sergei Bobrovsky as a resilient group of Edmonton Oilers beat the Panthers 5-4 Thursday night to even the Stanley Cup final at two games apiece. 'Obviously, a fortunate bounce, no secret, but we'll take it,' Draisaitl told Sportsnet after the game. Draisaitl set a record with his fourth overtime goal in a single post-season, but it was Pickard, Edmonton's backup goalie extraordinaire, whose performance stood out. Not only did he get a piece of a seeing-eye Sam Bennett shot moment's before Draisaitl's winner, but he didn't even start the game. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Leon Draisaitl scored the OT winner and backup goalie Calvin Pickard was outstanding off the bench as the Edmonton Oilers came back from a 3-0 deficit in the first period to beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 and even the Stanley Cup final 2-2. (June 13, 2025 / The Canadian Press) The Oilers went with their No. 1, Stuart Skinner, but pulled him after he allowed three goals in the first period. 'It wasn't on (Skinner),' Pickard aid. '(Coach Kris Knoblauch) just wanted to change things up. And after that, we played really strong. Down three against a great team, coming back, and then in overtime we got a bounce of our own. 'It's a blur at this point. You give Draisaitl time with the puck, he's going to make you pay. Got a good bounce. I honestly don't even know. I just saw the puck go in. But it was a game of bounces. I took a shot (from Bennett) off my glove. It hit the crossbar. But we had the last bounce, which was nice.' Pickard, who picked up the pieces after Skinner lost Edmonton's first two games of the post-season to Los Angeles, did it again. He stopped 22 of 23 shots. 'It was unbelievable to be able to step into a game like that, make some huge saves, really tough saves. Clutch saves,' Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. 'I can't imagine coming off the bench is easy as a goalie, but he stepped in beautifully. Leafs Opinion Nick Kypreos: Forget Sam Bennett. The Maple Leafs should chase Brad Marchand in free agency — with a unique selling point Marchand has set himself up to get a big raise as a 37-year-old free agent. That's a good thing Pickard is now 7-0 in the post-season, an unsung hero on team filled with them. 'It doesn't matter who's in net,' Pickard said. 'We're chasing the same thing.' Series in the Cup final have been tied at two games apiece 26 times. The team with home-ice advantage have won 20 of those. Game 5 is set for Saturday at Edmonton's Rogers. About the Panthers Matthew Tkachuk scored twice and Anton Lundell scored once for Florida, all in the first period, and the Panthers were left to wonder what happened to their game after holding a 3-0 lead. They were trailing 4-3 when Sam Reinhart salvaged Panthers pride and forced overtime with 20 seconds to go. 'It's a tight series,' Tkachuk said. 'There's momentum swings on both sides. It's a best-of-three. We missed one tonight. We have to go in there and win one. Hopefully we can do that in Game 5.' The Panthers squandered an opportunity to take a stranglehold on the series. 'It's a bad break on the overtime winner,' Florida coach Paul Maurice said. 'Three of the four games have gone to overtime. That's probably the expectation. If you plan for seven games, that means you're losing three of them. So you have to take that pain, use it and come back.' Perry speaks It was Perry, the 40-year-old veteran chasing his second Stanley Cup, who gave a brief talk to his teammates in the first intermission, the body language of the Oilers looking defeated as they retreated into their room. 'It was just, look where we are, the position we're in,' Nugent-Hopkins said. 'That's a guy that everybody in that room respects so much. He's been through it all. So when he speaks up like that, it means a lot. And I thought we did a good job responding.' Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse and Vasily Podkolzin scored as Edmonton rallied in the second period, while Jake Walman gave them a 4-3 lead with 6:24 to go in the third period. They are the second team — the first since Montreal in 1919 — to rally from a 3-0 deficit after the first period. 'That's what we do,' Draisaitl said. 'We're a resilient group. Russell Westbrook won't exercise $3.5 million option for next season, AP source says

Russell Westbrook will not be exercising his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets for next season and will instead become a free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday. The decision doesn't necessarily mean that Westbrook won't be back with the Nuggets, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side revealed the decision publicly. NBA reporter Marc Stein first reported Westbrook's decision, which was later confirmed by ESPN and The Denver Post, among others. Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Nuggets this season — his 17th in the NBA — and helped Denver reach the second round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City. He underwent surgery after the season to repair multiple ligament tears in his right hand, an issue he played through during the season. At that time, Westbrook posted in his newsletter than he was 'grateful for everyone's support all year and I can't wait to be back out there at 100% soon. The comeback is already in motion.' That would indicate that he is planning to play somewhere next season. Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection and won the MVP award after the 2016-17 season. He's also part of the NBA's 75th anniversary team and has averaged 21.2 points and eight assists per game over his career. Formula 1 drives spectators to Montreal this weekend

Article content Bulls-of-the-Week Article content This is the weekend of the single biggest annual sport tourism event in Canada: The Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1 automobile racing in Montreal. It reaches its climax Sunday at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Île Notre-Dame, but not before attracting more than 300,000 spectators and generating government tax revenues north of $17 million, with a projected economic impact of $162 million, including approximately $110 million driven by visitors from outside of Quebec. Article content Article content Some economists believe such marquee events have a net economic impact of zero, suggesting there are few full-time permanent jobs created. They also point out that tax revenues are nearly offset by the cost of public funding through government grants and sponsorships. Yet the eyeball test is always a helpful assessment, and there is no denying the spike in hotel rooms, restaurant visits and merchandising sales this weekend in Montreal — not to mention the increasingly large television audiences that F1 is registering in North America and around the world, especially in Europe and Asia. Article content Article content That kind of exposure drives incremental tourism dollars throughout the year, all pumping up the gross domestic product of the Quebec economy — some say to the tune of $67.4 million per year. Article content It's also been a bullish week for the Toronto Blue Jays, who go into a tough weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies with eight wins in their last 10 starts and tied for the third-best record in the American League and sixth-best in Major League Baseball. More impressively for a ballclub that was the poster child of inconsistency throughout the first six weeks of the regular season, the Jays are on a 22-10 run and have the best record in baseball over the past month. Article content Article content Article content For most sports fans in North America, however, the most important content being generated this week relates to the one-two punch that is the NHL Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the defending champion Florida Panthers, as well as the NBA Finals pitting the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Indiana Pacers. The NBA series has added story angles and fan hooks given four Canadians on the two teams, including MVP Shai Gilgeous Alexander. Article content Short sidebar on the Panthers: With the Abbotsford Canucks playing the Florida affiliate — the Charlotte Checkers — in the championship series, they are the first organization since 2008 that has had teams in the Stanley Cup and Calder Cup finals in the same year. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins made it 17 years ago, but neither won.
