Tourists fume as they're charged 'rip off' price to walk along pier at iconic seaside town
Opened in 1899, Brighton Palace Pier is an iconic Brighton landmark and has fairground rides, arcade games and restaurants.
It was free to enter until last year, when tourists started being charged £1 entry between the months of March and September.
But now the price has doubled.
And, although the £2 entry charge includes a £1 voucher to spend on the pier, some visitors are far from happy with the new price, with one even insisting they won't 'go back'.
A reviewer on Tripadvisor described the pier's 'admission charge as a joke'.
'Rajb_UK' wrote: 'What a rip off...lots of people turning around and leaving.
'No wonder the number of visitors on a Bank Holiday Monday was low...won't go back again.'
Another visitor 'HalyconDays' wrote: 'It is some time since we had been on the Palace Pier. We [were] absolutely flabbergasted to find out they were charging £2 a person to get on.'
Visitor 'JJ L' , who left a one star review, said: 'What a scam! What a disappointment that is has become paid!'
'Gregory P' said: 'Absolutely disgusting that they are now charging a fee to walk down the pier!
'You should be ashamed of yourselves. I refuse to come back to the pier until it's free again!'
However, local residents can still access the pier for free all year round, as long as they apply for a special card.
Brighton Palace Pier told the Mirror that people with a BN postcode just need to collect a resident's card from the team at the pier entrance or apply on the website for free entry.
And not everyone was upset by the £2 entry fee.
'KateLondon_9' said: 'First time paying to enter the pier but you do get money off the rides. There's plenty to do - arcade games, rides, food and drinks.'
'Michael B' wrote: 'This is a piece of history that should and has been preserved for many more years of enjoyment.
'Great to spend some time in the old penny arcade playing the vintage games. Great outlook over the ocean.'
The pier team told The Mirror: 'The pier is a substantial structure and in recent years maintenance cards have risen by more than a third.
'The admission fee is critical in helping to meet the unique challenges and costs of preserving the pier's structural integrity as well as continuing to remain as an all-year-round attraction.'
Brighton Palace Pier is currently the city's fourth-best rated attraction on Tripadvisor with four out of five stars.

Maura Higgins and Danny Jones 'set for awkward reunion as I'm A Celeb gets nominated for NTA after THAT drunken kiss'
and Danny Jones are reportedly set for an awkward reunion, months after their drunken kiss at the BRITs hit the headlines. The married McFly singer, 39, and his marriage to model wife Georgia, 38, was rocked after the I'm A Celeb winner shared a drunken kiss with campmate Maura at a Universal Records party and further reports claimed the pair had continued their night until 6am, sharing wine together at Nobu Hotel bar. Since the scandal, neither have been attended any of the same events, but now Danny and Maura, 34, could soon come face to face, as they walk the red carpet for the National Television Awards at the beginning of September. The ITV jungle show has picked up 15 nominations and is traditionally shortlisted for Best Entertainment category. In the past, the winner of I'm A Celebrity has joined hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly on stage as they collect the gong - meaning Danny could be at risk of bumping into Maura. A source told The Sun: 'Danny is expected to attend NTAs on September 10, as have all previous reigning jungle winners and Maura is also going. 'She is the queen of a red carpet moment and adores getting glammed up. There will have to be some clever choreography to ensure they don't end up next to each other when walking the red carpet but they could both end up on stage if I'm A Celebrity wins. They added: 'Maura won't be answering any questions about the kiss. She's put the incident behind her and feels she has nothing to be ashamed of.' At the time of the incident, Danny, apologised to his wife and family for 'putting them in this situation'. Georgia, who is a former Miss England, temporarily moved out of the family home in the wake of the kissing scandal back in April. But after deciding to give their marriage a second chance, she returned to the property as sources claimed Danny was willing to do 'anything to make it work.' In recent weeks, Danny has been quietly working on repairing the couples 11 year marriage and has just come back from a family holiday with Georgia and their little boy Cooper, seven. Sharing a slew of snaps to his Instagram, the family looked happy and relaxed as the posed by the sea all together, glowing from the sun and fresh faced from their sunny getaway. Danny and Georgia beamed for the camera and in another shot, Danny posted a picture of the three of them walking down some cobbled streets, with Georgia grinning from ear to ear. The Daily Mail has contacted Danny and Maura's representatives for comment. It comes after Danny and Georgia shared some photos of each other on social media earlier this month, a reunion with Georgia's family last month. In July, Georgia and Danny revealed they had been catching up with his mother Kathy as the trio headed to watch Oasis' first of seven reunion shows at Wembley Stadium. In their first high-profile outing together since the scandal, Danny and Georgia appeared happier than ever in a black-and-white picture shared to Instagram. They gazed lovingly at one another while Kathy stood in the middle of them as they all shared a laugh together ahead of the concert. Just days before the gig, Danny and Georgia took to social media to share a photograph of them together as they caught up with her family. The shot showed Danny and Georgia standing in a crowd of relatives, including seven-year-old son Cooper, while both beamed for the camera. She captioned the post: 'And then there was 17. My family are dotted all over the world so getting all of us together at once is near on impossible which makes days like this even more special. 'Cousins, aunties, uncles, parents, husbands, wives, kids… my house was full and my heart happy. Missed you Si.' The couple were last seen together publicly in March.

Angela 'Two Homes' Rayner accused of using national security laws to hide the fact she has THREE bathrooms in grace-and-favour home
has been accused of using national security laws to disguise the fact that she has the choice of three bathrooms in her taxpayer-funded grace-and-favour home. The Deputy Prime Minister's officials refused to answer a Parliamentary question about the number of bedrooms in her London residence in Admiralty House 'for security and operational reasons'. However, the Conservatives have discovered through Freedom of Information laws that she enjoys the use of three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The revelation is part of a wider attempt by the Tories to establish whether Ms Rayner is paying her own council tax surcharge on second homes on Admiralty House. She became known as 'Two Homes Rayner' last year after this newspaper revealed she had shuttled between two Right-To-Buy council properties early in her marriage. It was claimed that she rented out her house while living in her husband's property. Ms Rayner has been cleared of any wrongdoing. It is not known where she is currently paying council tax. Records of MPs' expenses show that when she entered government, Ms Rayner designated her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency home as her 'primary residence', and a London flat she used to rent as her second. That allowed her to claim back the £1,621 council tax bill on the flat from the taxpayer as one of the housing costs reimbursed by Commons authorities. But, having moved into Admiralty House four months before her Local Government Department started levying an extra 100 per cent council tax charge on second homes, if the Ashton-under-Lyne property is still her primary residence the £2,034 council tax bill for her grace-and-favour home – and for which she is now liable – doubles to £4,068. Shadow Cabinet Office minister Mike Wood said: 'It's a scandal that Rayner tried to use national security laws to prevent the public from knowing she has three bathrooms all to herself. 'She claims to be a woman of the people but this exposes how out of touch she has become... Rayner must use this opportunity to come clean on her council tax bill on this residence. ' A spokesman for Ms Rayner said: 'Angela is has two teenage sons and the flat she has been allocated has enough room for them to be able to stay with her... That's hardly surprising and most certainly isn't unprecedented.'

Strictly faces fresh scandal after BBC reportedly calls in police over new allegations
The BBC has asked the police to investigate Strictly Come Dancing amid fresh allegations, according to reports, after claims two of its stars used cocaine. The Sun On Sunday reported that the corporation has alerted the Metropolitan Police to new allegations about the dance competition show, the details of which it does not specify. A BBC spokesperson said on Saturday that the corporation does not comment on police investigations. It comes after reports in The Sun earlier this month alleged two Strictly cast members' drug use was discussed on the BBC dancing show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation. The scandal-hit show was also the subject of a review in 2024, when the BBC looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner, Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made, and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare. This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals. EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme. The cocaine use allegations were reportedly made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour. It is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations. The BBC spokesperson previously said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. 'We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.'
