Oregon QB Targets Bryson Beaver, Matt Ponatoski Turned Heads at Elite 11 Finals
So it bodes well that a pair of Oregon Ducks targets, Bryson Beaver and Matt Ponatoski, are receiving some high praise coming out of the camp.
After the three-day camp, Beaver was named the No. 3 top performer, while Ponatoski came in at No. 7 on the list. In a story from The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, the CFB analyst's biggest "pleasant surprise" was seeing what Ponatoski could do with the ball in his hands.
"The most pleasant surprise to me was Ohio's Matt Ponatoski," Feldman wrote. "The two-sport star has an electric arm, having been clocked at 97 mph as a pitcher. That arm wowed me Thursday morning in his 7-on-7 performance. The 6-1, 196-pounder, who is uncommitted, made two 'wow' throws to receivers who didn't look open at all, but he fired the ball into the only spot he could and completed the passes. It was impressive."
Meanwhile, Beaver turned a lot of heads throughout the weekend, coming in as a relatively unknown prospect who has exploded onto the scene in the last week.
"Bryson Beaver, a three-star recruit from Southern California (No. 54 QB in the class), turned a lot of heads as well this week. The 6-2, 200-pounder, who recently decommitted from Boise State, is getting a lot of interest from some Power 4 powers, including Oregon. It wasn't hard to see why. He has an excellent arm and good feet."
In his "superlatives" for the Elite 11 Finals, Charles Power named Beaver the player from the week with the strongest arm, while Ponatoski was the most accurate of the bunch.
Both Ponatoski and Beaver are expected to take their official visits to Oregon this week, with the Ducks likely getting a commitment from one of them. At the moment, there is a belief that Ponatoski could get selected in the MLB draft as a top high school prospect this summer, which might lead to him never taking a snap in college football. That may lead to the Ducks prioritizing Beaver, who is among the fastest-rising QB prospects in the nation.

Spartans bringing a better O-Line to the table this year per comment from position coach
Spartans assistant coach Jim Michalczik provided an optimistic report on his offensive line on Thursday One of the areas that could make or break the Spartans this year is the offensive line, and it sounds like things are looking pretty good there as we progress through fall preseason camp. The Spartans have a number of weapons at the skilled positions this year, but if you're offensive line isn't any good then it doesn't mean much. Good thing for Michigan State is that offensive line coach Jim Michalczik is confident in that bunch after the first few weeks of fall camp. He met with the local media on Thursday and expressed some strong confidence in his offensive line compared to the unit from a year ago, while noting there is still room for improvement as they approach the season. "We have a bunch of dudes that can play," Michalczik said during his media availability. "The fun thing with this camp is that every day the bar just got higher. Every day we have improved, (but) I still think we have a lot of improvement to go... We are so much further advanced in understanding the offense, understanding football. We are talking about things we never talked about last year. We have so much more of the offense in now so (I'm) optimistic, yeah, but still have a lot more work to do." Michalczik added that a number of starting spots are still up for grabs, and that they should get some decisions made out of Saturday's second fall camp scrimmage. This goes in line with a comment from head coach Jonathan Smith earlier this week where he stated there's roughly 10 guys in the mix for a starting spot after the first two weeks of fall camp. Michigan State has a few more weeks of fall camp remaining before they open the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium in that matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Check out the full video from Michalczik's press conference on Thursday below. Spartans are bowling in preseason CBS Sports projections
See where Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has the Spartans landing in his preseason bowl projections Michigan State football is heading right down the road for its first bowl game in four years. Or at least that's how Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has it in his preseason bowl projections. Crawford released his preseason bowl projections for the upcoming season on Thursday, with the Spartans making the cut. He has Michigan State landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit in his opening projections for this season. The Spartans are projected to play the Toledo Rockets out of the Mid-American Conference. The GameAbove Sports Bowl is played at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26. Ironically, if this projection were to play out, it would be two straight games at Ford Field to end the 2025 season for the Spartans as their regular season finale against Maryland is also set to be played there on November 29. Michigan State finished 5-7 last year in head coach Jonathan Smith's first year leading the Spartans. Michigan State last reached the postseason in 2021 when they beat Pitt in the Peach Bowl. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 entering the season, so landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl is right about in line with the betting odds for them this year. Hopefully, Michigan State is able to play above that and end up in a higher level bowl game but I also wouldn't hate the opportunity for the Spartans to play in a bowl game in their own backyard if it worked out that way. Michigan State opens the 2025 season on August 29 in a home game against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1. Pair of Oklahoma Sooners named to Polynesian Player of the Year watch list
Oklahoma running back Jaydn Ott and defensive lineman Jayden Jackson were named to the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award watch list on Thursday. The award is given to the most outstanding college player of Polynesian ancestry who, according to the Polylnesian Football Hall of Fame, the organization that hands out the award, "exemplifies exceptional ability and integrity both on and off the field." Previous winners of the award, which has been given out since 2014 at the collegiate level, include former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and, most recently, Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Jackson is a reigning Freshman All-American after a standout first season with the Sooners. He started 10 of the team's 13 games at defensive tackle, including three for-loss, with two sacks. When he started the team's season opener against Temple last year, Jackson became first freshman to start on the defensive line since Tommie Harris did so in 2001. Ott is preparing for his first year in Norman after transferring from California-Berkeley in the offseason. He was a first-team All-Pac 12 player two seasons ago after rushing for 1,315 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore. Last year, injuries bothered Ott, and he finished with just 385 yards and four touchdowns. Still, Ott ranked as a top-50 player in the transfer portal when he entered after the 2024 season and ultimately chose Oklahoma. The watch list includes 81 players from 40 different teams across Division I football. Four other SEC players were also named: Texas linebacker Liona Lefau, Texas A&M center Mark Nabou, Tennessee defensive lineman Jaxson Moi and Ole Miss cornerback Kapena Gushiken.
