Coimbatore man treks Velliangiri Hill for 102 days to raise awareness against alcohol, drug use
B Hari Kumar, a fitness coach, has been climbing the hill since February 1.
The Velliangiri stretch consists of seven hills and reaches an altitude of 1,778 metres from the sea level. It is a 5.5 km stretch from the foothills, and there is a temple of Lord Velliangiri Aandavar on the seventh hill.
Even though the temple is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department, the trekking route comes under the forest department's purview as it is in the reserve forest area.
Every year, the trekking route is open for the public from February 1 to May 31, and the trek takes roughly six-seven hours for an average person to complete.
However, Hari Kumar completes the trek in two-and-a-half hours.
Hari Kumar told TNIE, "Earlier in the season, I trekked for 26 days continuously on the hill. To make an attempt to complete 108 days continuously, I started trekking on February 1. I made the attempt to show the importance of fitness.
Every day, I start trekking around 9.30 am and reach the top of the seventh hill, at 6,200 feet, in one-and-a-half hours and return down in 50 - 55 minutes. I complete the trek by 12.30 pm."
"As I am a fitness coach, it makes it easier to trek the hill within two-and-a-half hours. My friends admire the speed at which I trek the hill. To create a record, I decided to trek 108 days in the season. So far, I have completed 102 days as on May 25," he said.
He said that the motive is to be fit and healthy, and without drugs and alcohol.

Negligence case: Relief for hospital and doctor
New Delhi: The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission recently exonerated a Delhi-based hospital and its cardiologist from allegations of medical negligence. "In light of the totality of the material on record, including the nature of the illness, the delayed presentation of the patient, the suppression of prior treatment history, the delay in obtaining informed consent, the fixed-fee CGHS payment model, and the exoneration by the Medical Council of India, no case of deficiency in service or medical negligence is made out against the opposite parties," stated the commission. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The commission observed that there was a delay in granting consent by the patient's family on time. Further, the commission took note of the fact that the complaint against the treating doctor was dismissed by the erstwhile Medical Council of India, now the National Medical Commission. The history of the case goes back to 2015, when the patient was admitted to the hospital, National Heart Institute, with acute chest pain. Later, he died. The doctor was booked in April 2017, and the family of the deceased also filed a consumer complaint before the consumer panel and sought compensation of Rs 5.5 crore. The hospital and the doctor denied all allegations of medical negligence. The commission noted that even though the Delhi Medical Council held that there was medical negligence, the ethics committee of Medical Council of India exonerated the doctor.

US stocks today: UnitedHealth shares jump over 10% after THIS Warren Buffett move. Details here
US stocks today: Dow Jones and the S&P 500 hit a new record high on Friday, 15 August 2025, as the benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average gained from UnitedHealth shares jumping over 10% on Wall Street. The shares of the insurance firm, UnitedHealth Group, jumped more than 10% on Friday after Warren Buffett's Omaha-based investment giant, Berkshire Hathaway, invested fresh capital, acquiring a stake in the troubled firm. UnitedHealth has faced several challenges in the last two years due to rising costs, a US federal government investigation into the company's government-backed health plans, and a cyberattack that affected the personal information of 192 million US citizens, among other cases, reported the news agency Reuters. Warren Buffett, Wall Street's value investor, tends to invest in distressed companies that are likely to provide long-term strategic value. According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing data cited in the agency report, the Omaha-based investment giant owned nearly 5.04 million shares of UnitedHealth as of 30 June 2025. The data also reportedly showed that Warren Buffett himself owned nearly 1.18 million shares between 2006 and 2009 before selling off his stake in 2010. 'Buffett's purchase is a psychological reassurance to many investors that saw UnitedHealth as 'untouchable,' given the massive turbulence in the stock over the past few months,' Kevin Gade, chief operating officer (COO) of Bahl & Gaynor, a UnitedHealth investor, told the news agency. UnitedHealth Group shares were trading 11.64% higher at $303.08 as of 10:19 a.m. (EDT) on Friday's US stock market session, compared to $271.49 at the previous Wall Street close. In the last five years, the shares of UnitedHealth Group have lost 6.62% in the US markets, and are down 47.85% in the last one-year period. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the stock has lost 40.08% in 2025. However, the shares of the firm have given US stock market investors more than 18.98% gains in the last five market sessions on Wall Street. UnitedHealth's market capitalisation (M-Cap) was at $245.88 billion as of the trading session on Friday, 15 August 2025. The shares of the insurance firm hit their 52-week low level at $234.60, while the 52-week high level was at $630.73, according to the data collected from MarketWatch.
