Lee calls for building next-generation power grid with focus on renewable energy
"Energy transition has become an essential task," Lee said as he presided over a meeting of senior presidential aides. "On top of an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, the supply of renewable energy through power grid improvement has become very urgent."
Lee instructed the government to draw up measures to establish a next-generation power grid that lowers the inefficiency of long-distance power transmissions and makes use of cutting-edge AI technology.
The presidential office said the government will turn South Jeolla Province into a hub for such a plan, noting the region's potential for supplying renewable energy.
Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, said in a press briefing that the government plans to establish industrial complexes for renewable energy micro grids by using steel and petrochemical industrial complexes in the region.
The government will allocate about 200 billion won (US$143 million) next year for a pilot project to establish a next-generation power grid by building microgrids in the region's university, airport and military units, and connecting them, according to Kim.
The presidential official said Lee aims to nurture the country's energy industry into one akin to the chip industry, and eventually seek to export electricity technology and products. (Yonhap)

S. Korean military to upgrade joint command, control system
South Korea's military will upgrade the Allied Korean Joint Command and Control System in a bid to ensure a smoother transfer of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul, the state arms procurement agency said Monday. The command and control system will be upgraded and ready for operations by 2029, under a 117.8 billion won ($84.9 million) project, according to Seoul's Defense Acquisition Program Administration. A key goal is to apply the latest technologies such as virtual desktop infrastructure, cloud-based servers and artificial intelligence to the system. It will also feature automatic Korean-to-English translation and teleconferencing to improve communication between the allies. The system's security will be enhanced, while connectivity to the US Combined Enterprise Regional Information Exchange System – Korea (Centrixs-K) will be improved. The US military's Centrixs-K network is designed to enable the secure and reliable sharing of classified information between the US and South Korea, particularly in the context of combined military operations. Critics have consistently pointed out the need to address systematic incompatibilities between AKJCCS and Centrixs-K, including language barriers. 'The AKJCCS update project will be carried out as a comprehensive upgrade of the hardware and software, almost on par with the development of a new system,' a DAPA official said in a statement. 'We plan to successfully complete the update by effectively adopting the latest technology and policies into the system in a stable manner.' This marks the first systematic upgrade to the AKJCCS since it was deployed in 2015. The transfer of military OPCON from Washington to Seoul has been a major issue between the allies for decades. South Korea's new Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, during his National Assembly confirmation hearing last month, said completing 'the transfer (of wartime OPCON)' is the goal of the Lee Jae Myung administration. The presidential office, however, downplayed the remark as Ahn's 'personal view' and stressed that no deadline has been set. Wartime command of South Korean forces has been entrusted to a series of US generals since South Korean President Syngman Rhee "assigned all command authority" to US Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1950, at the start of the 1950-53 Korean War. South Korea resumed peacetime OPCON of its armed forces from the US in 1994. Though Seoul and Washington have occasionally held talks on transferring wartime OPCON, the transition has been postponed multiple times due to North Korea's provocations. The commander of US Forces Korea — who also serves as the commander of the Combined Forces Command — currently retains wartime OPCON.

Lee's approval rating recovers on trade deal, safety stance: Realmeter
President Lee Jae Myung's job approval rating for the fifth week of July rose by 1.8 percentage points to 63.3 percent, Realmeter showed Monday. The recovery, which negated more than half the reduction over the two previous weeks, followed Seoul's announcement Thursday in a reduction in new US tariffs on South Korean goods including cars from 25 percent to 15 percent in return for a $450 billion spending package to invest in the US and buy US natural liquefied gas. The latest poll involved 2,520 people across the country aged 18 or older. This was in line with a separate poll, also released by Realmeter Monday, that 63.9 percent of 1,016 respondents viewed the tariff deal struck between Seoul and Washington favorably. On the other hand, 32.3 percent viewed the deal unfavorably. About 23.8 percent of the respondents viewed the cut in the US' "reciprocal" tariff to 15 percent and most-favored nation treatment for sector-specific tariffs as the biggest achievement in the latest trade deal, while 23.2 percent said it was avoiding further opening of US beef or rice to South Korean markets. Also driving the uptrend in Lee's popularity for the final week of July were Lee's emergency response to the heat wave that gripped the country and strong stance against workplace accidents. The upsurge was somewhat offset by the public disappointment about the proposed tax code changes, aimed mainly at stock investors, according to Realmeter. Of all respondents, 31.4 percent disapproved of Lee's job performance in the fifth week of July, down 1.6 percentage points. Lee's approval rating has now stayed above 60 percent mark for five straight weeks, according to Realmeter's estimate. On Friday, another analytics firm Gallup Korea's survey for the fifth week of July showed Friday similar uptrend, in which Lee's popularity climbed up 1 percentage point to 64 percent. Meanwhile, Realmeter polls also showed Monday that the support rating for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea had surged 3.7 percentage points to 54.5 percent. Realmeter estimated that the surge in popularity was attributable to the president's "stable management of state affairs," coupled with the "spillover effect" caused by the special counsel's probe into Lee's conservative predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee. The main opposition People Power Party saw its support rating decline by 1.8 percentage points to 27.2 percent in the final week of July.

Special counsel summons ex-FM Park in probe into ex-first lady
A special counsel team said Monday it has summoned former Foreign Minister Park Jin to appear for questioning over corruption allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee. Park has been asked to appear as a reference witness at the office of special counsel Min Joong-ki at 2 p.m. to undergo questioning about the circumstances that led to former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife's surprise trip to Ukraine in July 2023.
