Shaq slammed NBA all-time player ranking that had Kobe Bryant outside top 10
Take Shaquille O'Neal trying to defend the late Kobe Bryant's legacy on Monday, for example.
After Bleacher Report unveiled its all-time NBA player rankings, which had Bryant at No. 11, Shaq took issue with the publication's exclusion of his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate outside of the top 10.
Honestly? I can see both sides here:
On the one hand, Bryant was a five-time NBA champion. He was an 18-time All-Star and was also an 11-time First-Team All-NBA selection (he was All-NBA in some fashion in 15 of his 20 NBA seasons, which is remarkable). He is easily the second greatest shooting guard of all time behind a certain Chicago Bull. So, I can see why some folks would want to see him in the top 10. He has a solid argument for it.
But when I look at this top 10, I struggle taking anyone out to elevate Bryant.
Michael Jordan and LeBron James are the two greatest NBA players ever. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's consistency and longevity can't be questioned. Magic Johnson is the best point guard and facilitator we've seen. Bill Russell's tremendous impact and influence on the league cannot be discounted. Tim Duncan may have had the best "winning player" career of anyone to ever step on the hardwood. Larry Bird redefined the small forward position for one of the NBA's two signature franchises. Wilt Chamberlain stuffed the stat sheet, night in and night out, like no other. Because of his shooting, Steph Curry is arguably the most influential player of the modern era. The 3-point revolution does not happen without his ridiculous prowess from behind the arc. Full stop.
Ironically, the only person that Bryant could replace in this top 10, to me, is O'Neal, who is way too high at No. 6 for my tastes. But even then, I don't know that I'm actually taking O'Neal outside of the top 10. His run from 2000-2002, when he won three titles and three Finals MVPs with the Lakers — by no coincidence, Bryant was his running mate — is arguably the best individual peak in NBA history. O'Neal deserves his flowers, too.
None of this screed is meant as disrespect to Bryant. There have just been so many truly special NBA superstars over the years. And many of them were, indeed, extremely influential on the league's health, evolution, and future, if not more than Bryant. It's to the point where putting him outside the top 10 shouldn't be this huge "crime."

2025 NBA Sixth Man Of The Year Odds: Payton Pritchard Favored To Repeat
Fans are already diving into the odds for next season's NBA betting markets. The Thunder are the current favorites to win it all again, Cooper Flagg is the heavy favorite to win Rookie of the Year and there's a close race at the top of the board for Most Improved Player. And now bettors are starting to put some cash on players for Sixth Man of the Year. Payton Pritchard won the award at the end of the 2024 season, becoming the fourth Celtic to take home the honor. The 6-foot-1 point guard is the favorite to win Sixth Man of the Year at the end of the 2025 season. Let's look at the early odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of July 15. He appeared in 80 games for the Celtics last season, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Pritchard was the favorite to win Sixth Man of the Year for virtually all of last season before officially taking home the award in April. Second on the board is Cleveland's De'Andre Hunter at +800. Hunter was drafted fourth in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Lakers but spent most of his career in Atlanta until being acquired by the Cavaliers in February 2025. He averaged 17 points and 4.0 rebounds in 2024 and received two first-place votes in last season's Sixth Man voting. A name further down the board that bettors might want to keep an eye on is Oklahoma's Alex Caruso at +8000. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 7.1 points off the bench but was an integral part of the Thunder's championship run, as he shot 44.6% from the field. Nets vs. Knicks summer league game preview: How to watch, lineups
The Brooklyn Nets (0-2) have not had the start to the Las Vegas Summer League that they were hoping for when they made their debut for this event on last Thursday. The good news is that Brooklyn gets another chance to earn their first win of the summer league on Tuesday against the New York Knicks. The Nets have seen solid performances out of players like Drew Timme and Nolan Traore over the course of their two games thus far, but everyone will be tested against this Knicks squad. For New York, they have been relying on Kevin McCullar Jr. and Pacome Dadiet as players the team is hoping can take the next step during the 2025-26 season to help the franchise move further in the playoffs. Brooklyn has been trying to play at the fast pace that head coach Jordi Fernandez wants to play while maintaining the free-flowing nature of allowing other players to make plays within the flow of the game. With that being said, here's what you need to know to get ready for Tuesday's game against the Knicks: How To Watch Probable Starting Lineups Brooklyn Nets New York Knicks Who To Watch Drew Timme has been incredible for the Nets through two games as he is averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 62.2% from the field and 30.0% from three-point land. However, it has been clear for awhile that Timme can play in the NBA after what he did last season in a limited sample size and what he's done thus far in Vegas. One player to watch for against the Knicks is Egor Demin, the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and the player that most Nets fans are curious about. Demin has not had a breakout game in the summer league just yet, but it looks like his confidence is growing as he gets more comfortable with the NBA game and how physical the players are allowed to be. Demin put up better counting numbers against the Wizards than he did in his debut against the Thunder, but his shooting percentages have not been encouraging to this point. Demin is not going to turn into a knockdown shooter over night, but it would ease some concerns about his ability to play off the ball if he were to shoot the ball better attacking the rim and finishing in the paint.

Emmanuel Acho on why LeBron James and Luka Doncic can't win the NBA championship together
There seems to be some guarded optimism about the Los Angeles Lakers' prospects this coming season. They likely aren't championship contenders, but they could be an improved team thanks to the addition of a productive starting center in Deandre Ayton, as well as better chemistry due to Luka Doncic being in his first full season with them. However, there are still doubts about how great the Lakers can be, mainly because of their shortcomings on the defensive end. They lack two-way players, and Doncic and LeBron James aren't great defenders for various reasons. Neither is Austin Reaves, who is their third-best player. On Fox Sports 1's "The Facility," former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho said that James needs to leave the Lakers after this coming season if they are to win the NBA championship because he and Doncic are weak defenders. "This has to be LeBron's last year if the Lakers want to win anything of significance," Acho said. "You can't win a championship right now — or, at least, it would be very hard to win with Luka and LeBron on the court at the same time because neither of them at this point are defensive juggernauts. "... I don't see the coexistence of LeBron and Luka and championships," Acho said. The Lakers were a strong defensive team for a period of time this past season, especially in February as Doncic got himself integrated with them. But after the All-Star break, they ranked just 17th in defensive rating, and in the playoffs, they were 12th in that category among the 16th teams that made it there. Los Angeles will likely be a very strong offensive team, if not an offensive juggernaut, this coming season. But it will have to overcome plenty defensively to get the job done in the postseason.
