Sindh Tenancy Act amendments favour landlords: Khaskheli
Khaskheli said that the Sindh Tenancy Act, 1950, has been in place for 74 years, but the amendments made over the years, particularly in 2013, favoured landlords (e.g., the Section 17 amendment shifted 100% of expenses to peasants). The high costs of inputs and limited or no irrigation water have created serious issues for sharecropping peasants. The rules for the Sindh Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act (SBLSAA), 1992, were not notified in 2024. The draft rules remained with the Provincial Law Department and were accessible to the Provincial Home Department, but were not made publicly available.
He also highlighted that the Sindh Women Agriculture Workers Act (SWAWA), 2019 has been passed which aims to protect the rights and welfare of women agricultural workers in Sindh. The rules for this law have not been passed thus this law is not being implemented.
He said that according to HWA's annual report on peasants rights in Sindh, most members of the Sindh assembly are feudal lords or originate from feudal families, often misrepresented as agriculturalists and businesspersons. Nine members are identified as agriculturalists and 23 as landlords; many of these are also landowners. Similar patterns are observed in the National Assembly, particularly among PPP members, where many are actual landowners, but their true professions are concealed. A significant number of Sindh Provincial Assembly members represent feudal families, who form the core base of the PPP in Sindh.
In 2024, a total of 1,012 bonded labourers were released from the custody of landlords and brick kiln owners in the agriculture and brick kiln sectors in Sindh. Of these, 620 bonded labourers (children, women, and men) were released from agriculture across various districts. Sanghar and Umerkot reported the highest numbers, with 194 and 206 individuals, respectively. In 2024 alone, 392 bonded labourers were released from the brick kiln sector, with Umerkot (125) and Sanghar (85) being the districts with the highest releases. Over 12 years (2013-2024), 12,005 bonded labourers were freed, comprising 32% men, 33% women, and 35% children. He further stated that over 6.4 million children are out of school in Sindh, many engaged in severe child labour, depriving them of education, health, and protection. Out of 1.7 million bonded labourers, approximately 700,000 are children suffering inhumane conditions, mainly in agriculture.
The report also highlighted that rural Sindh is heavily affected by dacoit culture and crime. Hari leaders blame feudal lords and landowners for contributing to this issue, claiming they have destroyed Sindh's agriculture sector, especially sharecropping peasants and farm workers.
HWA has collected details of tribal conflict in Sindh and revealed that from October 1 to December 31, 2024, 88 murders and thousands of injuries occurred in approximately 60 reported cases. Shikarpur district had the highest number of murders (31), followed by Ghotki (12) and Kashmore (7). It showed that other districts, such as Sukkur, Larkana, and Khairpur, reported lower numbers of murders (6-8), while Naushero Feroze, Jamshoro, and Dadu had fewer incidents.

Bilawal lauds role of journalist community
KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has lauded the role of Pakistan's journalist community during the recent Pakistan-India conflict, describing them as a national asset. Addressing a ceremony at the Sindh Chief Minister's House marking the 75th anniversary of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), he commended the organisation's long and distinguished struggle for safeguarding freedom of expression and strengthening democracy during periods of authoritarian rule. He recalled a moment during the ARD-led struggle, saying: 'I remember the time when the then-dictator, in his final days in power, began imposing restrictions—even on television channels—and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto stood firmly with you (journalists), side by side.' While appreciating the role of Pakistani journalists during the recent Pakistan-India conflict, he said, 'I want to thank all of you for the way Pakistan's media and journalists countered India's false and disinformation-driven narrative on the global stage—it is truly commendable.' He added, 'I can proudly say that just as Pakistan's Air Force defeated India with a score of 6-0, our journalist community similarly outclassed the Indian media.' Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that prior to the war with India, there were restrictions on digital media, but the conflict made it clear that these platforms are, in fact, national assets. 'We are thankful that the government lifted those restrictions during the war, and to my knowledge, they have not been re-imposed since,' he said. He paid special tribute to Pakistan's Generation Z for their remarkable performance on the digital front during the war against India. Expressing hope, he said the federal government should take note of the journalist community's vital role and reconsider certain policies in recognition of their efforts. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari instructed Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon to continue arranging visits for journalists from other provinces to Sindh, so that accurate information regarding the development initiatives of the PPP's people-centric government could reach the wider public across the country. He pointed out that the Government of Sindh has introduced revolutionary measures in various public service sectors, including healthcare. He further highlighted that the project for the reconstruction of 2.1 million houses for the 2022 flood-affected population is the largest of its kind in the world. While speaking about Balochistan, he said that the province's issues and challenges are historical in nature and can only be resolved through substantial investment and dedicated efforts. He urged Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif to pay special attention and take concrete steps to accelerate the development process in Balochistan. He also called upon the journalist community to visit Balochistan and witness firsthand the challenges faced by the provincial government. Furthermore, he appreciated the Balochistan government's scholarship program for students under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti. Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugtti, and other dignitaries also addressed the ceremony. Bilawal vows legislation against disinformation
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced plans to introduce legislation to counter disinformation campaigns being used to mislead the nation, declaring that such efforts would be made in collaboration with the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). He was addressing journalists from across the country at a dinner hosted by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in honour of the PFUJ's Federal Executive Council at a local hotel on Thursday evening. The event also featured prominent addresses by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti and Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah. Bilawal said the state must win hearts, not impose control by force, especially in conflict-affected areas like Balochistan. "We must earn people's trust with sincerity, not suppression. The right way forward is through unity, truth, and transparency," he said. He hailed the lifting of restrictions on digital media, calling it a "national asset" and a sign of democratic maturity. "Our media is our frontline defender. Even in times of war, our journalists have shown more responsibility and credibility than the Indian media," he remarked. Bilawal urged journalists to highlight the positive side of Pakistan, especially development efforts such as the Sindh government's initiative to allot housing units to women, making them rightful property owners. "This is not just about homes. It's about empowering women. It's a silent revolution," he said, requesting extensive media coverage of the programme. He also reiterated PPP's commitment to fully implement the Journalist Protection Law, ensuring a secure environment for media professionals. Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah described PFUJ not merely as a union but as a "movement" with a proud history of resisting authoritarianism and defending press freedom. Highlighting past struggles, he recalled the 17-day wage board strike in 1970, the public floggings of journalists during General Zia-ul-Haq's regime, and the clampdown on the Jang Group during Nawaz Sharif's second term, which the then-opposition leader Benazir Bhutto defied through a rally in their support. He also cited the 88-day sit-in by journalists in 2007 against then military ruler Pervez Musharraf, stating, "At every critical juncture in Pakistan's history, journalists have stood for the people's right to know - and we, as a party, have always stood by them." Murad highlighted key steps taken by the Sindh government, including, establishing Pakistan's first-ever Journalist Protection Commission; allocating funds for journalists' housing; providing financial support to press clubs across the province. "We have always safeguarded journalists' rights, and we will continue to do so," he affirmed. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, speaking at the event, acknowledged the serious challenges in his province but urged journalists to also highlight the positive changes taking place. "The perception about Balochistan is worse than the reality. Things are improving, and the media has a role to play in bridging that gap," he said. The event served as a rare moment of unity between political leadership and the journalistic community, with speakers stressing mutual trust, transparency, and responsible reporting as the way forward for a more informed and democratic Pakistan. Senior journalists and office bearers of PFUJ, including President Afzal Butt, Secretary General Arshad Ansari, and other representatives from various parts of the country were also present. The gathering concluded with a note of appreciation for the provincial governments' support for the journalistic fraternity.

Independence Day celebrations start
Political, religious parties and social organisations besides the government departments kicjed off a 15-day celebration of Independence titled the Battle for Truth as a tribute to the founders as well as the defenders of the country. Rallies were held across the city by PPP, MQM-P and other political parties while the city's administration was busy in ramping up security for the festive occasion. Exclusive ceremonies were held at the CM House and the Governor House. MQM-P staged a rally at the Quaid's Mazaar with a vow that as the heirs of the founders of the country they would continue to defend its ideological and geographical boundaries. Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said that the month of August reminds us of the sacrifices of the martyrs who laid down their lives for the creation and protection of Pakistan. In the Ma'arka-e-Haq (Battle for Truth) our armed forces displayed remarkable bravery, valor, and resilience, which not only brought the honour to the country and pride for the Pakistani nation. This instilled a strong sense among the people that Pakistan is an invincible nation and that its defence lies in capable hands. He expressed these views while addressing a ceremony held on Friday at the Department of Energy, organised under the auspices of the Sindh Transmission & Dispatch Company (STDC), as part of the Independence Day and Ma'arka-e-Haq celebrations. The event was hosted by STDC CEO Saleem Sheikh and attended by Secretary of Sindh Energy Department Mushtaq Soomro, MD of Thar Coal Energy Board Tariq Shah, Project Director of SSEPP Mahfooz Ahmed Qazi, Secretary of Sindh Transmission Dispatch Company Umar Nawaz Sheikh, CFO Sajjad Ahmed Junejo, Senior GM Technical Tariq Saeed, along with other senior officials. On this occasion, the energy minister cut a cake to mark the celebration and shared it with attendees. Additionally, commemorative badges were distributed at the event by STDC CEO.
