Woman, 81, Was Last Seen Driving Home in May. Her Human Remains Were Likely Just Found, Son Says
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Jerry McConnell was last seen on May 14 in Missouri and driving to her home in Overland Park, Kan.

Authorities announced that human remains during the search for McConnell were found on June 11, about 1 mile from where her vehicle was previously locatedOfficials said human remains were found during the search for a Kansas woman who went missing last month.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a May 17 news release that a Silver Alert was issued for Jerry McConnell, 81, of Overland Park, Kan.
According to the bureau, McConnell was last seen in Harrisonville, Mo., on May 14, and driving a grey 2009 Honda Accord to her Overland Park home. Authorities also noted that she may have been near Severy, Kan., on May 15.
Then on May 20, according to a news release from the Cowley County Sheriff's Office shared with PEOPLE, deputies were notified that a vehicle associated with the Silver Alert for McConnell was found abandoned on private property in a rural area near the 4000 block of 327th Road in Cowley County, Kan.
Daily searches for McConnell were conducted since the discovery of the vehicle, but to no avail, authorities added.
Then, on Wednesday, June 11, while searching the area of 333rd Road, authorities came across human remains about 1 mile from the location where McConnell's vehicle was earlier located, said the Cowley County Sheriff's Office.
McConnell's personal belongings were also discovered.
'An autopsy is pending to confirm the identity of the remains,' the Cowley County Sheriff's Office said in its statement.
'We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who contributed time, resources, and support in the effort to locate Jerry over the past three weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family during this difficult time,' the department added.
Rick McConnell, identified by Fox affiliate WDAF, The Kansas City Star and the Johnson County Post as the victim's son, wrote in a Facebook message that authorities informed him that a body presumed to be that of his mother was found.
'Conditions indicate Jerry likely passed not long after she abandoned her vehicle in the remote location,' Rick wrote.
'The Family wishes to express our gratitude and appreciation for the tireless efforts of both the Cowley County Sheriff's Department and the Overland Park Police Department,' Rick further added. 'Unless you have personally experienced such an unfathomable situation, you cannot comprehend the enormous efforts such an operation entails.'

A depraved Oregon man allegedly raped a teenage girl he met online — after coercing the youngster into sending explicit photos he used to blackmail her into a four-year string of disturbing trysts, cops said. Seth Michael Winkelhake, 40, was busted Tuesday, months after a tip exposed years of sexual abuse he inflicted on a 13-year-old girl, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. The young girl allegedly told police she met the sicko — who called himself Jeff — online in 2018 and started chatting after he lied about his age. But the chats took a twisted turn when she sent the graphic images, which the accused predator used to manipulate her into maintaining contact, cops said. Seth Michael Winkelhake, 40, was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree rape and other sexual offenses. Clackamas County Sheriffâs Office The Hillsboro man convinced the girl to meet in person when she turned 16 — and showed up to the perverse rendezvous in Oak Grove with his face concealed with a ski mask or cloth. Deputies said Winkelhake blindfolded the victim before putting her in his car and driving to local parks where he carried out the sick acts — despite her efforts to stop them — from 2021 to 2024. Officials now believe there may be more victims. The alleged perv, who volunteered with local education organizations in the Portland area, is suspected of using Facebook, Instagram and AntiLand, an anonymous chat room, to hunt for young girls online. Cops said he often used fake names like Jeff, Don Jon and Marc to bait his victims, and had a 2018 Nissan Frontier and a 2002 Volkswagen Golf registered in his name. Officials now believe there may be more victims and have made public the cars registered to the accused predator. Clackamas County Sheriffâs Office Winkelhake was arraigned Wednesday on 23 felony and misdemeanor charges, including first-degree rape, third-degree sexual abuse, first-degree encouraging child sex abuse and luring a minor. Gary man gets 70 years for killing marijuana dealer
A Gary man got 70 years Friday for killing a marijuana dealer. Tyrone Reno, 34, was convicted last month of murder in the Nov. 15, 2021, death of Quintez Johnson, 31, plus a gun enhancement. He faced up to 85 years. Johnson's two kids, aged 8 and 6, were in the apartment when he was shot. At trial, jurors viewed footage of an unmasked man running down a stairwell just after Johnson's death. They returned a guilty verdict after 15 minutes. Reno has said he is innocent and plans to appeal, his lawyer Natalie Williams said in court Friday, asking for a 45-year sentence. During lengthy remarks, Deputy Prosecutor Milana Petersen said Reno killed Johnson over cash and a 'little bit of weed.' She ultimately asked for 75 years. Johnson's mother, emotional on the stand, said her grandson still wouldn't eat spaghetti because it was the last dinner he ate with his dad. She expressed empathy for Reno's family. My son would have helped you, she told Reno. 'I just want to know why,' she said. 'He would have done anything you asked.' He was wearing the same clothes, including a Black hoodie with white lining and brown tag. The other officer approached him. Reno gave his name, but he wasn't arrested, since the man in the video wasn't identified yet. Police learned Johnson started selling marijuana a month earlier to help pay his bills. Reno was arrested two years later. Investigators used 'facial recognition software' to help match security footage outside the Gary Police station to the man seen on camera at Johnson's apartment, court filings show. That left some questions on the software's accuracy. State lawmakers recently passed legislation to tighten standards for witness identification on photo lineups. It requires police to tell witnesses a suspect might not be in the lineup, cutting pressure to pick a photo; 'filler' photos – the non-suspects — have to look as close to a suspect as possible, and a witness' 'confidence' will have to be recorded.
